Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game's first gym leader, Falkner, will use only two Pokemon. Which is one of them?

Answer: Pidgey

Found in Violet City, the game's first gym leader specializes in flying-type Pokemon, and at the level at which you're likely to face him, these are fairly weak foes. While his gym's other trainers will use Spearow, just to shake things up, and Hoothoots appear in the grass in advance of your arrival here, Falkner himself uses a Lv 7 Pidgey and a Lev 9 Pidgeotto, but of which he claims were his father's. Winning the fight will give you the Zephyr Badge and TM31 (Mud-Slap), and it'll allow you to use HM05 outside of battle. Fortunately, it's found nearby in Sprout Tower.
2. Defeating Bugsy in Azalea Town gives you the opportunity to teach your Pokemon which HM?

Answer: Cut

An important early HM (HM01), Cut will allow you to start opening paths along your route forward to Goldenrod City, but getting the ability to (permanently) teach it to one of your Pokemon comes from defeating Bugsy, the game's second gym leader, who waits in Azalea Town to use their bug Pokemon. Lined up with a Kakuna, a Metapod, and a Scyther, Bugsy awards you with the Hive Badge if you win the battle as well as TM49, Fury Cutter. Finally, as a reward, Pokemon level 30 and up will obey you without issue with the Hive Badge in-hand.
3. Whitney's battle in Goldenrod City involves the use of a Miltank with which particularly frustrating attack?

Answer: Rollout

Found in the normal-type gym in Goldenrod City, Whitney is a unique character, not just because she tends to pout when you finally defeat her, but because the battle against her, despite having only two Pokemon, can be frustrating for lower-levelled players.

After Whitney's Clefairy is defeated, she'll send out Miltank, a hearty foe who uses Pound, Attract (for which you'll receive TM45 after), Milk Drink (which refills health), and Rollout, a strong normal attack which can be quite devastating for most Pokemon at this level of the game. If the player can persist through heals and Rollouts, Whitney will eventually reward players with the Plain Badge and the ability to use Strength outside of battle...even if you don't get HM04 until Olivine City.
4. Morty, in Ecruteak City, uses which Pokemon type?

Answer: Ghost

Ecruteak City is the fourth gym destination that you'll encounter, and Morty is found at the end of a maze-like path that requires a bit of trial-and-error (and fighting) to get to the end of. Morty himself fights with several ghost Pokemon-- two Gastlies, a Haunter, and a Gengar-- and naturally, they're not easy to face with normal-type or physically-minded attacks. Beating Morty rewards trainers with the Fog Badge and TM30 (Shadow Ball), allows them to use Surf (which you likely won't have at this point), and allows them to obey up to level 50.
5. You need to use which of these to reach Chuck in his own gym?

Answer: HM04 (Strength)

Morty's fighting-type gym, found across the waters of Route 40 and 41 in Cianwood City, is a formidable dojo wherein you can battle Chuck's students, but the real goal-- including the Storm Badge-- is hidden behind a trio of large boulders at the far end of the dojo.

In order to get to Chuck, you need to use a Pokemon with Strength to push the boulders in the proper directions to open a path. What follows will be a fight against a Primeape and a Poliwrath resulting in the badge, the ability to use HM02 (Fly, which can be found just outside the gym), and TM01 (Dynamic Punch).
6. Besides the gym leader herself, there are no other trainers in Jasmine's Olivine City gym.

Answer: True

It might not be all too surprising either, since Jasmine fights with steel-type Pokemon, which are newly-introduced in this generation and do not have a substantial number. You'll encounter Jasmine earlier than the gym itself because you'll be forced to help her find medicine for the sick Ampharos in the Olivine City Lighthouse. Once this has been sorted, Jasmine will return to her gym to fight with two Magnemites and a Steelix.

She'll reward TM23 (Iron Tail) and the Mineral Badge.
7. Which is not a Pokemon that Pryce battles with in Mahogany Town?

Answer: Swinub

The leader of the penultimate Johto gym, Pryce heads the institution in Mahogany Town, acting as the series' first ice-type gym leader while rewarding the Glacier Badge to anyone who bests him. His gym has a particularly unique mechanic wherein most of his floor is an ice maze, forcing visitors to slide along on the right paths and in the correct directions to succeed, often encountering other trainers on the route.

Pryce fights with Seel, Dewgong, and Piloswine (another of his trainers has a Swinub). His badge increases your Pokemon's Special stats and allows you to use HM06 (Whirlpool), which you'll receive from Lance shortly before visiting. He'll also give over TM16 (Icy Wind).
8. Clair, the final gym leader in Johto, won't give you the badge when you defeat her. Instead, you need to locate which item?

Answer: Dragon Fang

The final gym leader of Johto, Clair, operates out of Blackthorn City in the far northeast of the Johto map and she'll specialize in dragon-type Pokemon, wielding three Dragonairs and a Kingdra in her battle against you. Getting to her is the first challenge since her two-floor gym, complete with a lava pit, requires a bit of puzzle-solving via the use of Strength-pushed boulders to bridge the lava gaps.

Once Clair is defeated, she won't feel as though you're ready to receive the Rising Badge. To get that, you'll have to enter the Dragon Den north of the city and collect a Dragon Fang (at which point she'll hand over the reward). The Rising Badge allows you to use HM07 (Waterfall) and Clair will also relinquish TM24 (Dragonbreath). At this point, all Pokemon of any level will obey your command.
9. Who, of these, is not a member of the Elite Four in "Pokemon Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal"?

Answer: Lance

In "Pokemon Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", the Elite Four consisted of Lorelei (ice-type), Bruno (fighting-type), Agatha (ghost-type), and Lance (dragon-type), but most of this roster changes in time for the game's second generation with only Bruno staying onboard.

Instead, the Johto Elite Four consists of Will (psychic-type), former Kanto gym leader Koga (poison-type), Bruno (back with fighting-type), and Karen (dark-type). This culminates in a battle against Lance, the former leader of the Elite Four, and now the champion, back with his dragon-types. Beating him completes the Johto half of the game.
10. In the game's canon, your rival in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal" defaults to what name?

Answer: Silver

Silver is an enigmatic character in "Gold" and "Silver", acting as Blue did in "Red" and "Blue", showing up at key junctures in the game to provoke battles, but his true identity becomes clearer in later remakes down the line (including "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver" at which point it'll become apparent that he's Giovanni's son, and the heir apparent to Team Rocket (if it were still active at that point).

Silver won't be fought at the Indigo Plateau when you wrap up Johto. Instead, you'll face him in Mt. Silver before encountering him a couple times in Kanto. Like your rival in other games, he'll always take the starter Pokemon that's super effective to your own.
