The garden is part of the Ryoan-ji Temple which was built in the 11th century, and the garden was constructed about 400 years later, but the exact time is unknown.

There are over 900 varieties and untold thousands of individual palm trees in Rio de Janeiro Botanical Gardens, all of whom are descended from the Palma Mater. The Palma Mater no longer exists as it was struck by lightning. The gardens initially were designed to grow spices but quickly became a tourist attraction.

It sits at the foot of Mt. Corcovado below the Christ the Redeemer statue.

The Patio de Lindaraja is one of many gardens at Spain's Alhambra palace. It was originally a wide-open gardens but as the palace underwent renovations over the centuries, it became a confined garden, surrounded by walls on all sides. It was built around the 16th century and although the garden looks similar to what it did at its construction, the marble figures are now replicas and not the originals.
