Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Si vous etes en smoking:

Answer: You're wearing a tuxedo or formal dinner attire.

Yes, the famous designer Yves Saint-Laurent was said to have put women 'en smoking' or formal tuxedo type suits. The smoking is not as common as the tuxedo in America where it is used for proms etc. 'Fumeur-Non-fumeur' are the two sections and the legislation is not well enforced as any visitor knows.

Many places cannot afford it. But bit by bit it will be. Surchauffer is the verb for overheat. The first version of this quiz had the wrong answer, many apologies, I pasted it in wrong!
2. Si vous demandez un brushing, que demandez-vous?

Answer: You're asking your hairdresser for a hairstyle with a hairdryer.

The 'Brushing' was actually a copyrighted procedure by a French hairdresser. The distinction is between the stationary hairdryer and the helmet type. The Italians say 'phon' as well as the Germans as rather than resembling a phone it was for the wind that blew from Africa.

The Italians used the German hairdryer. 'Les Meches' are locks of hair literally and it's assumed you get them frosted. Probably fifty percent of the forty to fifty year olds in France do it.
3. Si vous faites un trekking, que faites-vous?

Answer: You're going on a mountain expedition such as Nepal or Kilamanjaro.

At one point this was really the 'grande mode' amongst the French, and yet, I heard many tales of people being airlifted with amoebic disentery and what have you from lands far from French medical care! 'Faire une etude du marche' is a market study. Trekkies, well I've never seen any here, there must be some though.
4. Que veut dire un peeling?

Answer: It's simply a mask for your skin to lift out impurities but could be dermo-abrasion.

That's a peeling and the ladies' magazines have a field day in the springtime with various products to peel your skin with.
5. Si elle se fait faire un lifting? Que fait-elle?

Answer: She's having a facelift done.

Yes, the word 'lifting' means a facelift. Plastic surgery is becoming as common as in the States now. 'Le Bodybuildingue' is the way many pronounce bodybuilding. I haven't seen many French women do it, but there must be some. 'l'ascenseur' is the elevator, and 'une echelle' is ladder.
6. Si vous faites votre planning? Que faites-vous?

Answer: You're doing your schedule.

Le planning even means the place where it is done in some places, or the reception desk of a vacation club. Le planeur is a glider. Planer is to glide and raboter is to plane with a tool. 'Se plaindre' is the verb to complain.
7. Que veut dire le stretching?

Answer: Exercise method where you stretch.

This was the big thing and is still being practiced. Most new fangled exercise methods need to sound English before getting people interested.
8. Le jogging? Qu'est-ce que c'est?

Answer: You're either running or you're wearing the outfit

This is for the action of jogging and also the clothing you wear. It used to be pronounced with disdain; now it's getting quite common.
9. Que veut dire le snacking?

Answer: To eat snack foods. To snack.

Now this word is pronounced about ten times a day on television and then they'll use 'le grignotage'. This new concept in marketing food items is taking France by storm but they do attribute the problems of newly overweight kids to it! Grignoter is to nibble. 'Un snack' is a snackbar.

The old word was 'un casse-croute' as you broke the crust of bread. 'Le gouter' is a snack in the afternoon for children, sometimes in the morning at school. A 'gouter d'anniversaire' is a birthday party. 'la chasse aux serpents' doesn't exist except at the last 'gouter d'anniversaire' my children attended!
10. Que signifie faire un footing?

Answer: This means running or jogging.

Un footing is jogging or running. Jouer au football or foot. Trebucher or faire un croche-pied is to trip someone.
