Commonly known as "La Mano", Irarrázabal's sculpture is a hand emerging from the sand as if someone were drowning, potentially representing human fragility in nature. Situated close to the city of Arica, Chile, The Presencias Tutelares are concrete sculptures of hooded figures which are often interpreted as guardians of the desert, spirits of indigenous ancestors, or symbols of memory and protection for the land and its history.
4. In Plaza 25 de Mayo, Resistencia, Argentina, you'll find a statue named "Monumento a la Loba Romana" which depicts Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome, suckling from which female animal?

Answer: Wolf

In 1920, the city's Italian community clubbed together and dedicated the statue to the town of Resistencia as a token of gratitude. It is a replica of the Capitoline Wolf, a statue in Rome, Italy, and symbolizes the nurturing of new beginnings in a foreign land.
5. The second tallest statue of Jesus in the world, named "Cristo de la Concordia" stands on San Pedro Hill, to the east of Cochabamba in which landlocked South American country?

Answer: Bolivia

Originally intended to be 33m high to represent one meter for every year of Christ's life, the finished statue is a little taller due to the hairstyle chosen by designers César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo. It was modelled on Rio de Janeiro's "Christ the Redeemer" statue but is taller.
6. On Rapa Nui (or Easter Island), a special territory of Chile in the Pacific Ocean, you'll find 1,000 monolithic human figure statues created by ancient peoples. By what local name are they known?

Answer: Moai

The Moai are thought to represent the living faces of ancestors and to bring protection as they face towards villages rather than the sea. The are made from volcanic rock and were carved in a volcanic crater called Rano Raraku, which still contains hundreds of half-finished or abandoned Moai.
7. In Trujillo, Venezuela, you'll find an enormous concrete statue named the "Monumento a la Virgen de la Paz". Who does this tallest statue in South America statue honor?

Answer: Mary, mother of Jesus

At over 46m tall, "Monumento a la Virgen de la Paz" is the tallest statue in South America. Opened in 1983, it was designed by Spanish-Venezuelan sculptor Manuel de la Fuente based on an idea by the then-first Lady of Venezuela Betty Urdaneta de Herrera Campins.

The statue's presence has since created what is known as the "Cult of the Virgen de la Paz", as worshippers flock to the nearby church for special events and Christian holy days.
8. "Floralis Generica" is a metal sculpture of a flower found in United Nations Plaza, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Which of these special facts about it is true?

Answer: Its petals open and close at dawn and sunset

Designed by Argentine sculptor Eduardo Catalano and opened in 2002, "Floralis Generica" is a silver metal flower with 6 petals that open and close at dawn and dusk, mimicking a real flower. It uses a hydraulic system and photoelectric cells to track sunlight for this purpose.
9. In Colombia's UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Agustín Archaeological Park, you'll find the largest collection of megalithic sculptures and religious monuments in South America. Is it true that the statues are mostly still brightly coloured?

Answer: False

Over 300 statues have been found in the San Agustín Archaeological Park, but most of the bright paint originally on them has worn away. The site is still mostly unexcavated but it is thought that the statues were carved between 5-400 AD and that the statues are funerary and relate to the ancient's civilization's view of the afterlife.
10. Often described as a "Wonder of the Modern World", which enormous, famous Brazilian statue of a religious figure was designed by a Brazilian engineer, had its body carved by a French artist, and its face carved by a Romanian sculptor?

Answer: Christ the Redeemer

Standing at over 38 meters high and with an arm span of 28 meters, Rio de Janeiro's art deco statue known as "Christ the Redeemer" in English ("Cristo Redentor" in Portuguese) was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and was carved by French-Polish artist Paul Landowski and Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida.

The statue is intended to be a symbol of peace and openness, with the outstretched arms being seen as a welcome or embrace.
