1. The episode opens with Gomez and Fester playing navy. Why is Fester upset?

Gomez was barking orders to Fester, who was playing the sailor, and was preparing to fire a cannon at a painting of a ship. When Fester pouted, Gomez decided to be nice and gave Fester the captain's hat. Gomez then recalled a story where Admiral Addams sank an enemy vessel... well, he went to his cabin while possibly someone else did. Apparently, the real Admiral Addams was eventually hanged 200 years ago. The cannon ended up wrecking the plumbing. Again. Uncle Fester put too much sulfur in the gunpowder.

Wednesday played with her doll while Morticia brushed her hair with a new cactus brush (the old porcupine one wasn't as good). Gomez brushed Morticia's hair, and Mama brushed his. Fester brushed Mama's hair and Thing used a back scratcher on Fester's bald head. Fester said the back scratcher had a slight hangnail and Thing got upset, threw the scratcher on the floor, and ran off.

Morticia spent the entire morning gathering toadstools for Gomez's omelette. After Gomez gives Morticia the policy, he begins playing with the clubs and one lands on his head.

In later episodes, we see that Cousin Itt enjoys staying up in the chimney. Gomez thinks the person at the door is Commissioner Fiske, who was going to arrive at 7:30. (Gomez had to check both his watches to determine the time - one said 6:20 and the other said 8:40, so naturally it was 7:30. How punctual.)

Uncle Fester complained that he asked for the Addamses' bear in return. Uncle Fester is bored of the same old life while Gomez and Morticia were playing. Gomez was a bull and Morticia was the matador. Morticia suggests that Uncle Fester take the vulture for a walk, but Uncle Fester suggests a vacation instead.

Gomez called the electrician, but the electrician hung up on him. (He wouldn't tell Uncle Fester exactly what the electrician said in front of Pugsley.) Gomez said they'd have to tell Morticia... Not because she could help, but because she was going to bake a cake that afternoon and was planning on using Uncle Fester to run the electric mixer.

Morticia and Gomez were using a crossbow to shoot apples that Thing was throwing into the air and said it was easier than shooting apples off Lurch's head. Lurch was on the rack and Mama said it was the only thing that helped him forget his troubles. It turns out Lurch's mom said she would come visit but Lurch had been lying to her.

Uncle Fester has a lightbulb in his mouth with a wire connecting himself to Pugsley's contraption. The first person Pugsley speaks to is from Japan, but "Happy Joe" claims there's an earthquake and that he has to get off the line when Morticia asks about his country. Next is a plane in trouble in the Bay of Bengal. Gomez suggests responding with the suggestion to dump the passengers, but Morticia takes the microphone and tells the captain to have each passenger attend to their own luggage to avoid a panic.

Mama didn't want Uncle Fester's opinion because she said he had an ax to grind. Mr. Swain said Mama was expressing 'the real' Mama as it couldn't be anybody else and suggested she get a teacher. Morticia said the painting was 'most unusual.'

Thing brought the mail in and his box was about two feet from Morticia. But instead of getting the mail herself, Lurch came from elsewhere in the house to get the mail from Thing and bring it to Morticia. Morticia then looked at the mail, seeing it was for Lurch, and handed it back to him. It turns out it was his annual invitation to the Butler's Ball, which he never accepted year after year. Morticia decides Lurch needs to get out more and make more friends.

Melancholia came to visit because Fred took back his ring, sold his farm, and joined the Foreign Legion. She wasn't sure if that meant he left her, and Gomez agreed it was pretty indefinite.

Uncle Fester brought Wednesday to Gomez and Morticia saying that Wednesday needed "to be whacked" but Morticia said there was no physical punishment in the house. Wednesday had been shooting off all of Uncle Fester's dynamite caps when she had ones of her own. Wednesday said hers weren't any fun because they just went 'poop.' Morticia preferred to punish Wednesday in a method that would leave an impression on her mind. Very progressive for the early 1960s!

Answer: Newlyweds

Morticia hopes the couple are imaginative and Gomez, knowing they are newlyweds, thinks they are romantic. They then begin to reminisce about when they moved into the house (contradicting a future episode about how they met) thinking it was haunted. We next see the wife complaining that she was married by the justice of the peace, no honeymoon, and now has to spend her honeymoon in a house overlooking the Addams's house.

Gomez then says he has been hers since he saw her riding side saddle on a buffalo. Gomez has been suspicious because when Morticia received Lionel's letter, her eyes lit up.

Gomez refused her request, claiming that the knife was to be used for carving works of art. But the knife was either dull or Gomez's hair was very strong as the knife wouldn't cut the hair he had plucked off his head. We next saw Morticia sharpening the knife for him.

Morticia is in the playroom with Mama and Uncle Fester and she says that she left the pair upstairs to spend quality time together. Mama believes Morticia and Gomez spoil the children when Morticia mentioned she was looking for Aristotle (the octopus) who was running around the house. Morticia agreed with Mama that children need discipline, but that they also needed love. Cut to Gomez sitting on the couch reading the newspaper, ignoring Pugsley who sees an ad for the circus on the back page. Pusgley then declares that he wants to see Gorgo the gorilla. Gomez agrees to Pugsley's request because he's friend with the owner of the circus - he was a sword swallower when Gomez first met him.

It's Harold Pomroy's birthday party and the children have decided to give Harold a tarantula. (Morticia believes a black ribbon for the gift would be appropriate.) Gomez and Morticia are great parents: they remind the children that not everyone has the same advantages they do and to remain modest and not brag.

When Morticia hears he's hanging pictures, she hopes Gomez isn't hanging the one of Cousin Grisly facing the firing squad down there because it looks so nice in the hall. Gomez was hanging posters to get the playroom into the election spirit of men the Addamses had supported in the past: Thomas E. Dewey (who was defeated by Truman), Alf Landon (who was defeated by FDR and Morticia said he was a good loser), Al Smith (who lost to Hoover), Wendall Willkie (who lost to FDR), and Adlai Stevenson (who lost to Eisenhower...twice), and Stephen Douglas (who lost to Lincoln). Gomez and Morticia remarked that Uncle Blight masterminded many of the losers' campaigns and was nicknamed "Kiss of Death". Even Lincoln asked for Blight's support, but Blight gave it to Stephen Douglas instead. Gomez decided he would be supporting Quimby in the local city council election.

As Morticia is knitting a sweater with a very long neck, Gomez is standing on his head (apparently it's very restful for the feet, but doesn't help the head). Gomez apparently has tried to get Uncle Fester to join, but something was bothering Fester, who has been acting strangely. Morticia says he's just improving with age.

Everyone goes and looks into Pugsley's room - he's wearing the uniform. Morticia refuses to let Wednesday look and see. Uncle Fester says this is Gomez and Morticia's fault for spoiling Pugsley.

The school district had found out the Addams family had two children who had never attended school. He was there to tell Gomez and Morticia to send the kids to school. He first was met by Wednesday, who said the house was nice and gloomy.

Gomez shut off the water and was about to call the plumber when Morticia suggested calling the insurance agent and letting him do all the work to get the plumbing fixed instead.

When Gomez comes to, Morticia is the only one around. She tells him that she's his wife and his first question is asking why she's in black. Morticia responds that Gomez always says it looks so becoming on her. Morticia tries to prove that they are married by showing him the insurance policy. He then calls the house a condemned museum.

So Uncle Fester suggests the moon - they haven't been there (yet).

Uncle Fester suggested mining the front porch so it would blow up when she pushed the doorbell. (Gomez improved upon the idea by suggesting they just wire the doorbell so it would electrocute her and thus the porch wouldn't be damaged.) Morticia didn't like that idea - she didn't think it would be kind to let her get all the way to the door and then disappoint her like that. Gomez suggested having Lurch play dead, but Uncle Fester didn't think Lurch could be convincing. Morticia agreed, saying Lurch was so vivacious. Morticia was the one who thought the family should just play along with Lurch's lie and let him be the master for the duration of his mother's visit.

Gomez didn't think it sounded right, so he suggested they all go for a look and they came upon a young man who had crashed his motorcycle onto the front lawn. He woke up and the first thing he saw was Wednesday's skull bank that Uncle Fester had been holding... and he promptly passed out again.
