TV Comedies: Characters and Actors Trivia Questions

1. Which sportscaster served as Super Dave's announcer for all of his stunts and demonstrations?

From Quiz
Super Dave Osborne

Answer: Mike Walden

Mike Walden appeared with Super Dave using his real name. He was great at finding the injured Super after a failed stunt and sticking the mic in the daredevil's face for a comment. "Super Dave, are you alright?" Also known for his colorful suit jackets and pants combinations, Walden was an amazingly effective straight man for Bob's Super Dave. He was at his best ignoring Super's post accident pleas for help in order to finish a segment, complete a contest, or kick it back to the studio. Mike Walden also found ways to plug Super Dave's use of the Genuine Saskatchewan Sealskin Bindings - a made up product that always drew a laugh from the audience. Prior to, and during his work on the show, Mike had the unique distinction of having worked for both USC and then UCLA as a broadcaster. In his "LA Times" obituary, it mentioned that when Walden was let go from USC Trojans sports, he simply went across town and worked for the Bruins of UCLA calling sporting events. Walden passed away on February 12, 2017 in California.

2. On "Golden Girls" I was Dorothy's ex-husband. Despite our divorce (after 38 years of marriage) I remained a constant and often unwelcome part of her life. Who am I?

From Quiz Characters In Comedy: Part 1

Answer: Stan Zbornak & Stanley Zbornak

Stan Zbornak was wonderfully portrayed by the late Herb Edelman. Initially, Edelman planned on being a veterinarian but dropped out of school after only a year to serve as a radio announcer with the U.S. Army. While driving a taxi in NYC, Edelman was given his big break by Mike Nichols who cast him in the Broadway show "Barefoot in the Park".

3. "Growing Pains" lasted seven seasons and was one of the most popular shows during its time. Maggie Malone Seaver and her husband sure did have some tough times raising their three children. What was the name of that husband, anyway?

Vivian Vance (the actress, who played Ethel Mertz) was born on July 26, 1909. Vance was nominated for her role at the Emmys on four different occasions. She won for Best Supporting Actress in 1953, however, she lost in 1954 (lost to Audrey Meadows), 1956 (lost to Pat Carroll), and 1957 (lost to Ann B. Davis).

15. As a running gag... the straps and belts used to secure Super Dave for his stunts were said to be made of what environmentally insensitive material?

From Quiz Super Dave Osborne

Answer: genuine Saskatchewan sealskin bindings

From the very first stunt Super Dave attempted with Mike Walden as his announcer, Walden took any opportunities to point out that Super Dave used belts, straps, coverings and cases made with Genuine Saskatchewan Sealskin Bindings. This would always get a laugh from the audience. During the Rambo Box Escape stunt, Mike Walden went so far as to say the handcuffs Super was using were coated with Genuine Saskatchewan Sealskin lining. How controversial was it? When Super Dave started doing commercials in the United States, he had to change this to Saskatchewan Salmon Skin. Perhaps the US audience was too sensitive for sealskin.
