Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which sportscaster served as Super Dave's announcer for all of his stunts and demonstrations?

Answer: Mike Walden

Mike Walden appeared with Super Dave using his real name. He was great at finding the injured Super after a failed stunt and sticking the mic in the daredevil's face for a comment. "Super Dave, are you alright?" Also known for his colorful suit jackets and pants combinations, Walden was an amazingly effective straight man for Bob's Super Dave.

He was at his best ignoring Super's post accident pleas for help in order to finish a segment, complete a contest, or kick it back to the studio. Mike Walden also found ways to plug Super Dave's use of the Genuine Saskatchewan Sealskin Bindings - a made up product that always drew a laugh from the audience. Prior to, and during his work on the show, Mike had the unique distinction of having worked for both USC and then UCLA as a broadcaster.

In his "LA Times" obituary, it mentioned that when Walden was let go from USC Trojans sports, he simply went across town and worked for the Bruins of UCLA calling sporting events. Walden passed away on February 12, 2017 in California.
2. As a running gag... the straps and belts used to secure Super Dave for his stunts were said to be made of what environmentally insensitive material?

Answer: genuine Saskatchewan sealskin bindings

From the very first stunt Super Dave attempted with Mike Walden as his announcer, Walden took any opportunities to point out that Super Dave used belts, straps, coverings and cases made with Genuine Saskatchewan Sealskin Bindings. This would always get a laugh from the audience. During the Rambo Box Escape stunt, Mike Walden went so far as to say the handcuffs Super was using were coated with Genuine Saskatchewan Sealskin lining. How controversial was it? When Super Dave started doing commercials in the United States, he had to change this to Saskatchewan Salmon Skin. Perhaps the US audience was too sensitive for sealskin.
3. The character Super Dave Osborne made appearances on a several TV shows since the 1970's. Which Canadian sketch comedy program showcased Super Dave the first half of the 80's decade?

Answer: "Bizarre"

"Bizarre" was a Canadian sketch comedy show that ran on CTV from 1980 to 1986. It also was aired on the Showtime cable channel in the United States, most likely due to the adult language. Super Dave's segments were frequently featured, probably because Bob Einstein was a show producer. Super Dave also appeared on the "Redd Foxx Comedy Hour" and "Van Dyke and Company" before getting his own show in the late 1980's. Regarding Rummy Bishop: this Canadian actor/comedian/voice actor appeared in a Super Dave segment in which Rummy visits a bedridden Super Dave in the hospital. Trying to lift Super's spirits, who was in four casts, Rummy unleashed a stream of corny jokes. An annoyed Super Dave only had one request: get Rummy out of his room.
4. Super Dave starred in series of TV commercials along with NBA athletes, and Mike Walden selling which shoe brand?

Answer: Nike

For the Nike commercials, Super Dave basically brought his formula from his TV show segments. With Mike Walden as announcer, Super Dave would compare the Nike Air Flight with some Super Dave contraption: Super Dave Spring Shoe, Super Dave Slam Dunk Catapult, and the Super Dave Rocket Shoe. Kenny Smith, Gerald Wilkins and Reggie Miller were the NBA stars who appeared in the commercials with Super.

The commercials ended with a typical Super Dave stunt malfunction. These were the commercials where Super used the Genuine Saskatchewan Salmon Skin, and not the Sealskin from the TV shows.
5. Who was Super Dave's loyal and trusty stunt coordinator?

Answer: Fuji Hakayito

Played by comedian Art Irizawa, Fuji appeared in most of Super Dave's television segments. Fuji was always eager to help explain the ins and outs of a Super Dave stunt. With his broken English, some may have argued that Fuji was pegged into a Stereotype.

However, he was never a target of any insensitive jokes in the series. In fact, Fuji was often the accidental culprit of many of Super's accidents. Fuji drove his van through Super's fast food restaurant, and crushed Super. Fuji accidentally drove a truck loaded with soda machines over a Super Dave soda car being driven by Super himself.

Despite incidents like these, Fuji remained a loyal companion to Super Dave on most of his stunts. Fuji was never featured in the Nike or Haggar television commercials.
6. During one segment Super Dave played Name that March with his studio audience. The Super Dave North American Marching Band was supposed to perform the music. However, to the surprise of Super, a fill-in band took the stage. What was the only song the fill-in band could play?

Answer: "Copacabana"

After talking up his epic marching band, Super Dave tried to introduce them to the crowd. However, a six piece Steelpan band walked out on stage instead. This was a far cry from the 32 men and women in his championship band. After being told his marching band was off doing a bar mitzvah, Super has no choice but to use the Steelpans. Four audience members took guesses at each song they played, and the formation they were doing. Each time they played, it was the same song: "Copacabana", originally performed by Barry Manilow. Also, in a miraculous twist, the audience members also guessed the formations correctly, probably because the band simply agreed with every guess. Being a good sport, Super Dave gave prizes to all four audience members, despite his frustration with the band.
7. What Item, retail price $3.50, survived the car explosion during the Garbane fuel demonstration along with Super Dave?

Answer: The Garbavator

In this segment, Super Dave was selling the gospel of a brand new fuel called Garbane. The new fuel consisted of methane and household garbage. The Garbavator was shown early on in the segment as the sole item needed to convert any gasoline car to run on Garbane.

At only $3.50, it was promised to be the only modification needed for ordinary gasoline engines. After Dave's car exploded on a full tank of Garbane, the camera man optimistically reported to a charred but alive Super that the Garbavator was still intact, and that they saved $3.50 for the next try. Using very colorful language Super made it clear he was not using Garbane ever again.
8. During the Super Dave Parade Village demonstration, which of the four parade floats crashed into the float carrying Super crushing him?

Answer: The Double Decker Bus

On the advice of Michael Eisner, Super Dave decided to add a fabulous parade to his compound. Inspired by the Disney Main Street Electrical Parade, Super Dave's staff came up with a computerized parade, with no drivers for the floats. A demonstration of four floats was set up, with the promise that the floats could be controlled from as far as fifty miles away.

The first float was an English double decker bus, followed by a lion float, and then a circus float. Super jumped on the final float, which was a 35 ft. long river boat design with a 'Bridge of Togetherness' that links the back end of the float where his family is standing. Super was standing on the middle of the bridge singing when his float stopped as it malfunctioned in the middle of an intersection. That is when the bus hit Super's float, t-boning it right at the bridge, and crushing an unsuspecting Super Dave.
9. In one of two commercials for Haggar Wrinkle Free Cotton pants, how did Super Dave put the pants through the "ultimate test"?

Answer: He wore them as he was hurled through a full service automatic car wash

What was only going to be 3 mph, Super Dave would wear the pants as he rode though the car wash in a sled he was strapped into. Figuring he was out of time after talking about the pants, Super Dave said he could not do the stunt, and that Haggar would have to pay him for another commercial.

At the last moment, the sled is fired up, and Super is shot through the car wash at much faster than 3 mph. Super ends up slammed through a brick wall, but managed to survive and proclaim to the audience that the pants were still not wrinkled.

This was one of two Haggar spots Super Dave did, the other being a remake of his infamous King of the road sketch. Mike Walden did not appear in these Haggar commercials as the announcer.
10. There was the infamous King of the Road segment. Super Dave decided to answer the request of an organization that wanted to end the use of profanity on the highways. Super Dave was all set to head out on a week long bus road trip in hopes of making a difference. How did the bus tour come to a quick end?

Answer: Super Dave was swept off the roof of the bus when it went into a tunnel.

As requested by the Sing Along Society of North America... no confirmation as to whether there is an actual Sing Along Society of North America, but in the show they existed. They had asked Super Dave to do something to help get rid of profanity on the highways. Super Dave and his staff came up with a bus outfitted with a rooftop patio that included a grill, chairs, and even an exercise bike.

At the back of the bus rooftop was a piano Super would play all the time during the road trip. By getting drivers to join in singing, Super believed it would be impossible use profanity. You can't sing a swear word. Super Dave asked the cameras to follow the bus to the county line as he began the trip.

He then climbed on the roof and strapped himself in front of the piano and started playing and singing. Of course Super did not make it very far; only to the first tunnel the bus went through.

This bit would be reprised in a commercial for Haggar, where Super starts a bus tour promoting the pants.
