Mixture: Networks Trivia Questions

1. What is the name of the sci/fi thriller series, set in the 1980s, that starts with the investigation of a missing boy, whose mother is played by Winona Ryder?

From Quiz
Netflix TV Mixture

Answer: Stranger Things

"Stranger Things" was created by Matt and Ross Duffer, brothers who admitted they wanted to create creepy, thoughtful movies, the kind made by M. Night Shyamalan. "Stranger Things" fits the bill. Winona Ryder plays Joyce, mother of Bill, who suddenly disappears. With the help of the sheriff and Bill's friends, she frantically searches for him.

2. This is a very long running UK series about Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and a constantly changing series of assistants who solve murders in a rural UK county.

From Quiz Acorn TV

Answer: Midsomer Murders

"Midsomer Murders" has been on the air since 1997 and is still running as of this writing (June 2017). There have been 2 Inspector Barnabys (cousins in the show) and FIVE Detective Sergeants at last count! After all of the murders in Midsomer, I'm amazed anyone is still alive there!

3. Set in Chicago, this show is about two cousins who lived together. One is from a Mediterranean island with a strong accent. The other is originally from Wisconsin and recently moved to Chicago. Name this show.

From Quiz TGIF

Answer: Perfect Strangers

The cousins were Larry and Balki. Balki was a sheepherder in his home country of Mypos. Whenever Balki was happy, he would do his dance of joy. "Perfect Strangers" starred Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot.

4. Initially broadcast on BBC2 between 1988 to 1999, which TV channel brought back the TV comedy series "Red Dwarf" back to TV with a new series in 2009?

From Quiz UK TV Channels

Answer: Dave

Created by Doug Naylor and Rob Grant, "Red Dwarf" is centred around four main characters. The only human onboard Red Dwarf is Dave Lister, a jack the lad Liverpudlian. To keep him company the ships computer - Holly - recreates Lister's former roommate Arnold Rimmer as a hologram, but retaining the character's pompous, by the rule book coward with a stickler for detail personality. The only other living creature on board is a humanoid that evolved from Lister's cat Frankenstein named Cat. At the end of series two, another character was added in the form of Kryten, a mechanoid rescued from a derelict spacecraft with a fetish for cleaning, who also unwittingly serves Lister, taking care of him. In seventh series, the character of Rimmer left the crew, replaced by Kristine Kochanski, whom Lister was once in love with. However, Rimmer rejoined the crew when series eight was broadcast. This time Rimmer is no longer a hologram but recreated by Kryten's nanobots as a living person, only to die again at the end of that series. After "Red Dwarf" ended on BBC 2, "Red Dwarf did not get re-commissioned until 2009, this time of the Freeview channel Dave. Initially, only three episodes were commissioned, but the success of those three episodes prompted Dave to revive the series with series ten and eleven broadcast in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Along with series eleven a twelfth series has recorded for future broadcast. Series ten and Elven also returned to the four main cast members, minus the ship's computer Holly played by both Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge in series from three to five.

5. Beginning in 1957, which dance show began airing on the ABC network?

The television show "American Bandstand" aired on the ABC network from August 5, 1957 through September 5, 1987. The show was hosted by Dick Clark. Teenagers on the show danced to current Top 40 songs. Bands would also perform on the show.

6. What 7 day celebration of toothy ocean creatures attracts large audiences to Discovery every summer?

From Quiz Discoveries By New Discoverers

Answer: Shark Week

Like much of Discovery's programming, Shark Week began as education oriented programming geared to teaching respect for sharks. In recent years, "docu-tainment" programs aimed at creating controversy and ratings have taken over much of the Shark Week block. Shows such as "Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives" have attracted viewers at the expense of factual content.

7. This was a children's show with Cookie, Wizzo, Frazier Thomas, and a game with buckets audience members tossed balls into.

From Quiz Chicago's WGN: When TVs Had Dials

Answer: The Bozo Show

Cookie the Cook was a clown played by Roy Brown. Wizzo was played by Marshall Brodien. Frazier Thomas was himself. The bucket game was called "Bozo's Buckets". To play, someone would be selected from the audience and given 3 balls to toss into the buckets. There were random prizes for each bucket you were able to toss the ball into. An "At Home Winner" also got the same prizes the ball tosser won.

With his trademark clean shaven head, classic tough guy looks, and deep booming voice, Irving Rameses "Ving" Rhames was cast in the title role of the USA Network remake of "Kojak". In the original version of the crime drama series, Telly Savalas starred as the lollipop sucking, wise cracking NYPD Detective Lieutenant, Theo Kojak. The original series aired on the CBS Network for five seasons with 118 hour long episodes. The series aired from October 24, 1973 to March 18, 1979. Answer: Al Gore

Al Gore (VP 1993-2001), along with businessman Joel Hyatt, launched his network on 1 August 2005 to combat what he called the "consolidation and conglomeratization" of television news and other programming with "democratization". It was meant to be an independent voice for a relatively youthful, progressive demographic. The original name was INdTV, but Gore soon decided on Current TV. Gore and Hyatt actually faced a lawsuit from a Cincinnati-based communications company over the use of the name "Current", but it was dismissed.

14. In 2011, Bill Engvall started hosting a game show on GSN, what is the name of the game show?

From Quiz Shows on Game Show Network

He is really funny, and at the same time he can be really serious when he is a game show host. Bill's version of "LINGO" was originally hosted by Chuck Woolery. In the episodes when Chuck hosted, the "LINGO" balls were smaller and the balls could bounce. In the Bill Engvall episodes the "LINGO" balls are as big as bowling balls and they can't bounce. From Quiz HBO Original Series Trivia

Answer: Montana

Wild Bill always called Seth "Montana".

21. What did CBS originally stand for?

From Quiz This...is CBS!

Answer: Columbia Broadcasting System

The "Columbia" part of CBS's name comes from Columbia Records, which in 1927 began a joint venture in radio broadcasting, with 47 stations in a network called the Columbia Phonograph Broadcasting System. After losing money on the deal, Columbia sold its interest to a group of private investors, led by cigar manufacturer William S. Paley. The network dropped "Phonograph" from its title shortly thereafter. In 1974, the legal name of the company was shortened to CBS Inc. (Thanks to wikipedia.com and the Museum of Broadcast Communications for additional information.)

22. What star of the Animal Planet channel had various shows, scads of merchandise, and a movie based on his own show?

From Quiz Shows on the Animal Planet Channel

Answer: Steve Irwin

He's none other than the "Croc Hunter" himself. I'm a fan of him and his show. Some think he's crazy but I think he knows what he's doing since he's had years of experience working with animals. His shows include "Croc Files," "The Crocodile Hunter," and "The Croc Hunter Diaries." Unfortunately Steve died a few years ago from a stingray accident.
