Answer: Space Invaders

"Space Invaders" was released in June of 1978 in Japan before it made its debut in North America at the end of the year. The game was almost instantly popular, and by 1982, "Space Invaders" arcade machines had grossed $2 billion in quarters (yes, that's 8 million quarters). In the game, you had to shoot upwards at hordes of (nicely lined up) aliens that slowly moved their way down towards the ground. The game was developed by Tomohiro Nishikado and produced by Taito in Japan and by Midway in North America.

Bulbasaur, a grass-type Pokémon which is assigned the number one on the Kanto Pokédex, is one of three Pokémon that is offered by Professor Oak at the start of the protagonist's journey. Saradomin Strike is one of the three coveted "God Spells" in "Runescape". You need the Saradomin Staff, obtainable after the completion of the Mage Arena, and the runes required for this spell (four air runes, two fire runes, two blood runes). Not only is Saradomin Strike a very powerful spell, but it can also temporarily lower the enemy's prayer level. A magic level of 60 is also required to perform this spell.

The Nitro Launcher shoots a large, powerful bomb that also has great splash damage. The Nitro Eruptor (upgrade at Lv 5) shoots bombs which unleash energy missiles when they explode.

"Lunar Lander" was released by Atari in 1979, later coming out in a home computer version as well (1981). The game was all about precision as you had to pilot a lunar module to an appropriate (flat) landing spot on the very rocky terrain of the moon. You had to use thrust to counteract gravity and to adjust your lateral motion, all while being careful not to expend your limited fuel supply.

Pikachu is a well known Pokémon even amongst people who aren't a fan of video games. This is due to his visibility in both the anime television and film series as the sidekick of the protagonist, Ash Ketchum. Pikachu is not available as a starter Pokémon in 'Pokémon Blue' but is available in 'Pokémon Yellow'; in fact, Pikachu is the mandatory starter Pokémon in this version.

The Predator Launcher costs 25,000 bolts and can first be purchased on Planet Kortog. At Level 5, it upgrades to the Raptor Launcher, and its hidden ability is Dual Target Detectors. The Predator Launcher is a sort of fusion of the Seeker Gun from "Ratchet and Clank 2" and the Spitting Hydra from "Ratchet and Clank 3" as it can target many enemies at once, and the missiles fired are not dissimilar to the seeker missiles.

This 1983 arcade game from Taito was a mixture of a shooter game and the ever-increasingly popular platform game. You controlled a spy (Agent 17, code name 'Otto') who had to make his way down 30 floors of a building, collecting secret documents hidden behind red doors and killing or avoiding the enemy agents littering the building. If you collected all the documents successfully, Otto escaped the building successfully and ended the level. If not, you were transported back up to the highest level that still had a red door unopened, and you continued until you either died, or finished the level.

Kanto is the name of the region in which the 'Blue', 'Red' and 'Yellow' versions of the game are set as well as being the region in which the remakes, 'FireRed' and 'LeafGreen', are primarily set. Kanto is home to the eight gyms which must be visited by a player in order for them to gain badges and to subsequently battle the Elite Four (Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha and Lance) on Indigo Plateau.

The Fusion Grenade is one of the default weapons you start with at the start of the game. At Level 5, it upgrades to the Fusion Bomb, and its hidden ability is Concussion Detonators. The Fusion Grenade is similar to what Dr. Nefarious uses when you battle him at the end of "Ratchet and Clank 3" - Nefarious lobs grenades at you which explode when they touch the ground, and they send a shockwave out that destroys anything in its blast radius.

"Missile Command" was released by Atari in July of 1980. In the game you had to defend six cities from missile attacks by the enemy. You had to line up a cross-hair target and shoot down the incoming missiles, trying to last as long as possible. 'Bonus' cities could be earned with enough accrued points, so even if you lost one or more cities, you could get more. The game was designed by Dave Theurer, who originally designated the cities in the game as six California cities: Eureka, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego (according to Wikipedia).

In 'Pokémon Blue', the first gym leader is the rock-type specialist Brock, who uses Geodude and Onix. This battle can be straightforward for a player who has selected Squirtle or Bulbasaur as their starter Pokémon as rock-types are weak to water and grass-type moves. Brock is a little more tricky for those who started off with Charmander, as rock-type Pokémon aren't strongly affected by fire-type moves. Once Brock is beaten, he will award the Boulder Badge which will allow the player to use a move called Flash.

Sentry turrets are used throughout the latter half of the game. They are seen especially in Nova Prospekt and are used as a method of defense, for Gordon can set them to fire against the Combine, who close in on all sides.

Zero Suit Samus, from the "Metroid" series, is bounty hunter Samus Aran without her recognizable Power Suit. The Game Boy Advance game, "Metroid: Zero Mission", was the first game to feature Samus in her Zero Suit.

Cerulean City is the home of the gym whose leader is Misty, a character from the early days of the anime. When Misty is beaten she will award the player a Cascade Badge, which allows for the use of the Cut move outside of battle. Misty uses two Pokémon in the gym battle and they are both water-types: Staryu and Starmie. This combination could be difficult for a player whose strongest Pokémon is the fire-type Charmander, as fire-types are weak to water-types.

"Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance" is the fifth game in the series, so named due to the perilous partnership formed between two of "Mortal Kombat's" most power-hungry combatants. In this game Quan-Chi has succeeded in escaping the Netherealm and joins forces with Shang Tsung. In a bold move, they succeed in defeating not only Shao Khan, but also Earthrealm's greatest warrior, Liu Kang. Together they return to Outworld, with the sole intention of resurrecting the undead army of The Dragon King, which has potentially dire consequences for the rest of the realms.

"Karate Champ" was a 1984 game released by Technōs Japan for Data East. The Japanese release was called "Karate Dō". The game was basically a karate tournament, where your character would be matched up against an opponent and you had to fight using a two-joystick control system that allowed for 24 possible maneuvers. Depending on how you struck your opponent (or they struck you), points would be awarded - either a full point or half a point. The first to two points would win the fight, and a match was best-of-three to either advance or lose. The initial release of the game was just human vs computer, but "Karate Champ - Player vs Player" came out later the same year, allowing for two players to compete with each other.

Team Rocket is a criminal organisation that is spread all over Kanto and they serve as the main enemy of the protagonist. The leader of Team Rocket is Giovanni, who is, in the 'Red', 'Blue', 'Yellow', 'LeafGreen' and 'FireRed' versions of the game, the leader of the eighth and final badge-awarding gym. By the time that the protagonist battles Giovanni at the gym in Viridian City, he will already have faced the Team Rocket leader on multiple occasions.

Appointed Administrator of Earth, Breen is a widely hated figure and antagonist of "Half-Life 2".

Lavender Town is one of the few settlements on Kanto that does not have a gym; the protagonist's home of Pallet Town is another such location. Despite the lack of badges that can be won in Lavender Town, there is still plenty of significant story arcs that must be completed. One of the main jobs is the ascent of Pokémon Tower, a building that is haunted by ghost-type Pokémon such as Gastly. Once the tower has been successfully navigated, the Poké Flute is awarded and this can be used to awaken sleeping Pokémon such as the normal-type Snorlax, who blocks the routes to other settlements.
