Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What family does the fossa belong to?

Answer: Eupleridae

The Eupleridea also includes mongooses.
2. What is a fossa?

Answer: A large civet-like mammal

A fossa is a Malagasay predator, living off of many forms of prey, though mostly lemurs.
3. Where does a fossa live?

Answer: Madagascar

Madagascar is a massive island off the coast of Africa.
4. How big can a fossa get?

Answer: About five feet long and 50 pounds

They can get to this size usually only in captivity.
5. The fossa is big enough and strong enough to catch and eat the adult of which of these?

Answer: Lemurs

The way a fossa hunts is that it races up a tree using its special paws with an almost prehensile toe on the outside, and grabs a lemur. It then proceeds to eat.
6. In 2001, the fossa is listed by the IUCN as an endangered species.

Answer: True

They are endangered mainly due to habitat loss, considering that Madagascar is heavily logged. Some are also killed because of their fetish for domestic chickens.
7. There used to be a giant fossa, ten feet long.

Answer: True

The giant fossa lived in prehistoric times, hunting giant lemurs. How ironic. They were possibly still around when the first people populated the island, perhaps explaining the native Malagasay people's slight aversion to the fossa, possibly from bad memories of a lion-sized beast killing someone. They are reputed to still exist in the more remote areas of the island.
8. Can fossas climb trees?

Answer: Yes

They climb trees to reach their prey.
9. Are there many Fossas in captivity (as of Jan. 2001)?

Answer: Only about 15 or so

They have not been of much interest to most zoos, strange considering that it is a large and fairly cute mammal, not too hard to keep in captivity. Still, interest is growing.
10. What is a fossa's temperament like?

Answer: Secretive and explosive

The fossa has a definitely extreme temper. Then again, you would probably be a little ticked too if someone shot a tranquilizer dart at you then stuck you in a box then clipped your ears.
