Simba is the Swahili word for lion, made famous by the movie "The Lion King". They are the only big cats that are social animals, living in prides run usually by one or two male lions.
2. This small antelope, having a long neck, can be found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, including on the Serengeti. What is the name of this animal, usually found grazing alongside gazelles and topi for safety?

Answer: oribi

The oribi stands about 20 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 50 pounds. While not a threatened species, some countries, such as Côte d'Ivoire, have experienced a nearly 90% decrease in oribi populations.
3. Unlike its South American cousin, which African cat is known for hanging its meal high up in trees?

Answer: leopard

When people come across a carcass hanging this way, they sometimes refer to it as the "leopard's larder" because the leopard can come back and safely continue to feed as necessary.
4. One of the most dangerous animals to humans is the African Buffalo. By what other name is this "Big Five" member commonly called?

Answer: Cape buffalo

Cape buffalo are the most numerous of the so-called "Big Five" game animals. They are also considered very dangerous and, despite their looks, are capable of running down humans that threaten them.
5. At a distance, this small feline could be mistaken for a cheetah. By what name is this animal, with very distinctive large ears, known?

Answer: Serval

Servals have big ears, obviously enough, because they hunt their prey by sound. To kill their prey, servals are known to jump up to six feet in the air to pounce on the prey from above.
6. Most numerous in the Serengeti, and classified as a subspecies, what name is given to giraffes with irregular and jagged spots instead of normal, more shapely ones?

Answer: Masai giraffe

The Masai giraffe, also known as the Kilimanjaro giraffe, numbers only about 30,000 today. While those living within protected areas are generally safe from poaching, the numbers of those outside park boundaries have fallen by nearly half since 2008 or so due to poaching.
7. Going on a safari near rivers and lakes, such as Lake Turkana, north of the Serengeti, could turn frightening if which animal threatened to attack?

Answer: Nile crocodile

8. What funny looking animal makes a yearly migration, known as the "Great Migration", from the southern Serengeti to the northern edge in Masai Mara?

Answer: wildebeest

The "Great Migration" begins soon after the birth of the wildebeest calves, and is said to consist of around a million and a half wildebeest, 250,000 zebras, and 150,000 of various types of gazelle. The highlight for many is the crossing of the Mara River in the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya.
9. This next animal is another one of the "Big Five", believed to cause hundreds of deaths through Africa every year. What animal must spend most of the day in rivers to avoid getting sunburn and heatstroke?

Answer: Hippopotamus

Hippos have fairly hairless and thick skin, about two inches. Hippos secret a reddish substance that is called "blood sweat" due its appearance. The reason hippos spend so much time in water is because their skin will dry out and crack if not wet.
10. The East African species of which animal sports ringed horns that measure nearly 30 inches long on both males and females?

Answer: oryx

The state of New Mexico released about 100 gemsbok, another type of oryx, into the wild during the 1970s. Despite living next to White Sands Missile Range, there are now an estimated 6,000 in the area. They are considered game animals, meaning they can be hunted if you have the proper license.
