Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all know this picture is of the King of the Jungle. Male lions have an incredible mane. A black mane means the male lion is in its prime, healthy and eating well, and of course sexually active.

Answer: True

The darker the male lion's mane the more powerful he is. This indicates his position as the leader of the pride and of course his right to be the breeder of the litters of cubs. A lion's mane will change colour according to his health and age and, as he ages and becomes weaker, other lions may increase in their power, and the struggle for the leadership role begins.
2. These animals are meat eaters, but do not catch their prey with their claws but instead use their teeth. What are they?

Answer: Hyenas

Although biologically similar to felines they resemble canines. It is generally thought that hyenas are scavengers but it depends on the type, with some being hunters and others being scavengers. Although at times they are portrayed as cowards this is not the case. They can be seen warding off lions from their kills.
3. Well what have we here? This time we have the closest African mammal to a swine, the African pig. What animal is this?

Answer: Warthog

The warthog, Phacochoerus africanus, is a wild African pig that is found in the sub-Saharan African territory which is mainly grassland and savanna. The warthog has two pairs of tusks. Both tusks come from their mouth and curve upwards, with the lower tusks becoming extremely sharp from rubbing against the upper ones, therefore becoming very effective in their battles and fights for dominance.
4. Do you recognise this one in the picture? It is equine. What is it?

Answer: Wild ass

The wild ass is believed to have come from the donkey, and is from the same species. These animals live in the dry areas of Africa including the Horn of Africa, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Because they live in the dry areas they are most active in the cooler parts of the day and survive on sparse vegetation.

They mostly live solitary lives rather than in herds like most equine animals.
5. Considered the most dangerous animal in Africa, the hippopotamus has an incredible mouth opening with a powerful jaw and large teeth. Proof is in the picture. Which of these describes hippos?

Answer: Third largest land animal by weight

Hippos live in water during the day and graze on land during the evening. Hippos spend their lives in water being rivers, swamps and lakes. The territory of the hippos is ruled by a male who inhabits the space with his females and their young. The day hours are spent in the water and at dusk the hippos graze on the banks' grasses. Otherwise the rest of their life, including reproduction and childbirth is in the water.

The largest land animal is the elephant, then the rhinoceros, with the hippo coming in at third.
6. Pictured during mass migration, through treacherous waters, what are the animals in this picture?

Answer: Wildebeest

Although not all wildebeest are migratory, the image in this photo should be familiar to those who have seen documentaries on their migration. The wildebeest that do migrate seem to do it at the time of need to ensure their food supply and water is adequate for the size and number of their herds.
7. Zebras are equine animals. Are each zebra's stripes unique?

Answer: Yes

Yes, it is true. The zebra's stripes are unique to each animal like our fingerprints are to us. Do you see the difference in the picture? When a calf is born, the mother ensures that the foal does see not any other zebra but herself, so that the stripes are imprinted on the brain of the foal. This way the foal knows who its mother is.
8. The majestic gorilla pictured is a mature male that takes its name from its striking appearance. What is it called?

Answer: Silverback

These magnificent animals are critically endangered. The gorillas live in troops and are led by a silverback. A silverback usually obtains maturity at 12 years old and makes all the decisions for the troop, including where it goes, stays, feeds, and the general safety and well-being of the troop.
9. The fastest land animal is the cheetah. Take a look at the picture and tell me what are the lines on its face called?

Answer: Tear lines

The cheetah is the fastest land animal and, like all cats, is a predator. It is active during the day especially at dawn and dusk. It usually preys on smaller animals such as impala, springbok and Thomson's gazelles. The cheetah has distinctive markings and tear lines, coming from the corner of the eyes down to its mouth.

These may protect the eyes from the sun or define expressions - the judge is still out on that.
10. This is a picture of members of the Herpestidae family in Southern Africa. What animals are they?

Answer: Meerkats

Everyone thinks meerkats are cute, especially when they stand up and look like sentries. Of course, that is just what they are, sentries. The meerkats form groups up to 30 individuals and they are very hands on with the family, with both males and females looking after the juveniles. They have extensive burrows and use these for nesting, breeding, living and defence.
