Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After just one mating session, female whale sharks are able to produce multiple pups over a prolonged period.

Answer: True

This is because the females are able to store the male's sperm, so even if they only mate once, the females are able to produce multiple pups from the sperm of one particular male.
2. How many times a year do hammerheads breed?

Answer: once

Hammerheads breed once a year and give birth to live young. Depending on the species, anywhere between twelve and forty pups can be born at one time. Like other sharks, baby hammerheads receive no parental care. They must fend for themselves from the moment of birth.
3. Young tiger sharks have more prominent stripes than adults.

Answer: True

Tiger sharks are named for their stripes. As youngsters, the stripes are very prominent, but as the shark matures, the stripes fade.
4. Male great whites are larger than females.

Answer: False

It's actually the other way around. The females are bigger. Very little is known about the great white's breeding habits, but through the study of pregnant females, scientists have learnt that great whites give birth to live young and their gestation period is around eleven months.
5. During which months of the year do tiger sharks breed?

Answer: It depends which hemisphere they live in

Tiger sharks living in the northern hemisphere breed between the months of March and May while those in the southern hemisphere breed during November, December and early January.
6. At what age do whale sharks reach sexual maturity?

Answer: 30 years

Whale sharks can live for between 70 and 100 years.

In 2009, marine scientists in the Philippines discovered what they believe may be a whale shark breeding site.
7. How big is a newborn great hammerhead?

Answer: between 50 and 70 centimetres

After birth, baby hammerheads stay together in groups until they're big enough to live alone. If they're lucky and don't end up as another shark's lunch, they will eventually grow to around six metres long and 450 kilograms.
8. Tiger sharks give birth to live young.

Answer: True

Tiger sharks breed once every three years. For the female, mating can be rather uncomfortable, as the male bites her pectoral fins to hold her still. Pregnancy lasts around sixteen months, after which litters of between ten and eighty pups are born.
9. How many claspers does a male great white have?

Answer: two

Located between the pelvic fins on male sharks are two organs called claspers. These are used to pass sperm to a female during mating.
10. On average, how many pups can a female great white give birth to at any one time?

Answer: between two and twelve

Most reputable sources give a figure of two to twelve, after a gestation of one year.
