Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This mammal lives in the coastal forests of eastern Brazil, is an herbivore and spends most of its life hanging upside down in a tree. Which animal is this?

Answer: three-toed sloth

Three-toed sloths only descend to the ground once or twice a week, usually to move to another tree, and their fur tends to be tinged green from the algae that grows in it. Because of their inactivity, three-toed sloths have an average body temperature of only 75 degrees Fahrenheit, although their temperature can vary depending on climate and activity level.
2. Native to the Amazon basin, which turtle never stops growing and can often be seen floating near the surface of a river?

Answer: giant river turtle

Adult female giant river turtles are larger than males - often up to twice as large as their male counterparts. The largest turtle species in the Amazon basin, they feed on insects, crustaceans, plants and fish. When young they have facial markings, but these fade with age.
3. Found in the northern region of South America, this New World monkey usually lives as part of a troop. Although preferring fruit, mainly figs when available, it feeds mostly on leaves. What is the name of this animal?

Answer: red howler monkey

Usually reddish-brown, with a few specimens more yellow or brownish, the red howler monkey breeds year round and has an average life-span of 20 years. They have exceptionally wide jaws which facilitate their howling.
4. This cat spends almost all of its life in the tree tops. A nocturnal hunter, it prefers to dine on small mammals but will also eat insects or fruit. Which cat from Central and South America is this?

Answer: margay

Using their tail to help them balance, margays can twist their back feet right around so they face backwards, enabling them to descend a tree face-first or to hang upside down from a branch. They come to maturity at a year, breed year round, and except for the mating season they are solitary animals.
5. Another arboreal and nocturnal animal, this furry creature is sometimes mistaken for an African primate called a potto. What is this furry animal's name?

Answer: kinkajou

Eating mostly fruits and insects, kinkajous can be found from Mexico to Brazil. Spending their days in dens inside hollow trees, after their nightly foraging they tend to return to their roosting trees at dawn. They have a life span of roughly 15 years and range in weight from 4 to 10 pounds.
6. The volcano rabbit is native to the volcanic mountain ranges of which area?

Answer: central Mexico

Their volcanic habitat is known as the zacaton. A high-altitude pine area, dry and sparsely grassed, the areas are home to small colonies of volcano rabbits who live in burrows by day and feed by night. One of the smallest of rabbits, volcano rabbits forage in packs and are most active at dawn and dusk.
7. With fleshy rays radiating from each nostril, which small mammal lives in waterlogged areas stretching from Canada to the southeastern USA?

Answer: star-nosed mole

Talented swimmers, star-nosed moles forage for food at the bottom of ponds and streams. During the winter, they will tunnel into ponds that are iced over. While willing to forage during the day, they are usually active above ground only during nighttime hours.
8. This monkey is named after the fur around its neck which gives it a very distinctive look. Which creature is this?

Answer: golden lion tamarin

Golden lion tamarins usually live in groups of eight, with only one pair of mates in the group. The entire group participates in raising the young of that pair, bonding, teaching and sharing food with the offspring. Unlike many primates, the golden lion tamarin has claws instead of fingernails.
9. Living in groups of thirty or so, which New World monkey forages during the day and moves from tree to tree through the Amazon Basin lowlands by swinging from branch to branch?

Answer: white-bellied spider monkey

This herbivore is native to the north-eastern area of the Amazon basin. A daytime forager, it is rarely seen outside of the lowlands. Living approximately 30 - 40 years, the white-bellied spider monkey produces a single-birth offspring every 3 to 4 years.
10. The kingsnake, native to southern USA and northern Mexico, preys on birds, frogs, lizards and other snakes. Is the kingsnake venomous?

Answer: No

The kingsnake is actually a constrictor and squeezes its prey to death. Depending on their location, they have different coloring. Mexican kingsnakes are black, while Arizona kingsnakes are yellow with black markings.
