Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Famous for the plays "The Glass Menagerie" and "A Streetcar Named Desire", what American playwright died from choking on a plastic bottle cap?

Answer: Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams is often considered to be one of the three most influential American playwrights of the 20th Century. Some of his early works often focused on the unhappy family life he had growing up, such as "The Glass Menagerie". During the 1940s and 195os he wrote some of the finest plays in the 20th Century including "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1947, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1953, and "Suddenly, Last Summer" in 1958.

In 1983, at the age of 71, Williams was found unexpectedly in a New York City hotel room, dead after choking to death on the plastic cap of a nasal spray inhaler.
2. Sonny Bono, the ex-husband of popular singer Cher died on January 5, 1998 after hitting a tree while skiing near South Lake Tahoe, California. Strangely, his death came a week after what son of Robert F. Kennedy had also died in a skiing accident in Colorado?

Answer: Michael Kennedy

Sonny Bono was one half of the music duo Sonny and Cher in the 1960s and 1970s and then became notable for his role as the mayor of Palm Springs, California from 1988-1992. He was also a congressman from 1995 until his death in 1998. During a ski trip at the Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe, California, Bono succumbed to injuries sustained after he skied into a tree. While his wife, Mary Bono, claimed that drugs were to blame for his accident, toxicology reports stated that no substances were in Bono's system at the time of the incident.

One week prior to Bono's death, the son of Robert F. Kennedy had also died in a skiing related incident. While at a ski resort in Aspen, Colorado, Kennedy was also reported to have died after sustaining injuries from colliding with a tree. In his case, he had been playing a game of football while on skis and collided with a tree.
3. Ray Combs died one day after police were called to his home over a disturbance. He once hosted what popular game show, that has had other notable hosts including Richard Dawson, Richard Karn, and Steve Harvey?

Answer: Family Feud

From 1988-1993, Ray Combs was the host of the popular game show "Family Feud" after the show was relaunched following a three year hiatus. In 1993, a decision was made to replace Combs as the host with Richard Dawson as ratings had begun to decline. In 1994, after suffering injuries sustained in a car accident, Combs life took a downward spiral.

He was left in permanent pain from the accident and his marriage would end in divorce. On June 1, 1996, a call was made to police after a disturbance call was made.

When police arrived, Combs had destroyed the inside of his home and was suicidal. He was admitted to a psychiatric facility and then committed suicide the next day, by hanging himself in a closet.
4. Canadian born film actress Marie Provost made over 120 silent and talking pictures during her short life. On January 21, 1937 she died of acute alcohol poisoning. She was not discovered for two days. What prompted someone to search her home only to discover her dead?

Answer: Neighbours complained about her dog barking.

Provost was born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada and moved to Denver, Colorado when her mother remarried. After landing a job at the Keystone Film Company in 1915, she was recognized by director and actor Mack Sennett. At this point, her career in acting took off.

She had made 121 known silent and talking films prior to her death. She often led a turbulent life of alcohol and binge eating, resulting in poor health. Following years of alcoholism, she died at the age of 38 after squandering most of her career earnings.

It was determined that she had died of acute alcohol poisoning. Her body was not discovered for several days and only when neighbours had complained about her dog barking did someone investigate. Some sources even suggest that her dog had began eating her body to survive.

Investigators found her body, several empty bottles of alcohol, and a promissory note in the amount of $110 to actress Joan Crawford.
5. Academy Award winner George Sanders died after an apparent suicide, after swallowing five bottles of Nembutal. He left behind three suicide notes, one which outlined his reasoning for his suicide. What reason did he give?

Answer: He was bored.

George Sanders had an acting career that had spanned more than 40 years. His most notable role is his Academy Award winning role in the movie "All About Eve" in 1950. Sanders also did the voice for the tiger Shere-Khan in the 1967 animated movie "The Jungle Book". Later in his life, Sanders suffered from dementia and his health began to diminish. He was often unable to keep his balance and could no longer play his grand piano. In one incident, he had a fit of rage and actually smashed his piano with an axe. In 1972, Sanders checked in to a hotel in Spain and never came out alive. After taking five bottles of pills, he overdosed and was pronounced dead. In a message of one of his suicide notes, Sanders stated:

"Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck."
6. In 2006, television personality Steve Irwin died while taking part in the documentary "Oceans Deadliest". What famous nickname was Steve Irwin known by?

Answer: The Crocodile Hunter

Steve Irwin was most famous for his role as "The Crocodile Hunter" on the television series of the same name. During five seasons split between 1996 to 2007, Irwin hosted 60 episodes. He was known for handling some of natures most dangerous creatures from alligators to the Komodo Dragon. During the filming of the documentary "Oceans Deadliest" Irwin would meet his fate. During a break in production, Irwin attempted to film while snorkeling for his daughter's television show "Bindi the Jungle Girl". During this filming, Irwin approached a stingray and was stabbed hundreds of times by its barbed tail.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The footage was destroyed at the request of Irwin's family and at the time was believed to be the only known footage of a fatality from a stingray ever caught on video.
7. Actor Anton Yelchin died in 2016 after he was pinned between a brick wall and his Jeep Grand Cherokee. What film was dedicated posthumously to both Yelchin and actor Leonard Nimoy (who died during the film's pre-production)?

Answer: Star Trek Beyond

"Star Trek Beyond" is the thirteenth film in the "Star Trek" franchise and the third film in what is known as the "reboot series". The main plot of the movie surrounds the crew of the USS Enterprise and their being stranded in a remote location at the edge of Federation space. After the USS Enterprise has been destroyed by unknown aliens, the crew find themselves defending themselves from ruthless enemies. Only once the entire crew can reunite are they able to prevent what could become a galactic war.

Anton Yelchin was probably most known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the "Star Trek" reboot series. During the early morning of June 19, 2016, he had died in what was deemed as a freak accident just weeks prior to the release of "Star Trek Beyond". The coroner's office determined that he had died from "blunt traumatic asphyxia" after being pinned between his vehicle and a brick wall. Transmission errors in his Jeep Grand Cherokee were determined to be the cause of his being pinned. "Star Trek Beyond" was dedicated in his honor. "Star Trek" actor Leonard Nimoy who played the role of Spock throughout the series, also had the film dedicated to him. Nimoy had died of complications from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) during pre-production of the film.
8. Perhaps most known for her role in the 1920 silent horror film "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", what actress died after being severely burned during the filming of the movie "The Warrens of Virginia" in 1923?

Answer: Martha Mansfield

Martha Mansfield went down in history in one of the more truly bizarre deaths while on the set of a film. During the filming of "The Warrens of Virginia", she was severely burned after a match had been thrown onto her costume made up of hoopskirts and ruffles.

She had just finished filming and went to rest inside of a vehicle. Her dress burst out into flames causing substantial burns to most of her body. During the investigation, it was never determined who was responsible for tossing the match.

She would succumb to her injuries the following day, at the age of 24.
9. On August 8, 1969, the notorious Tate Murders happened in the home of famous film director Roman Polanski. These murders were carried under the direction of what charismatic cult leader?

Answer: Charles Manson

The Tate Murders were the infamous murders of five people at the home of celebrity couple Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. At the time of the murders, Polanski was away filming in Europe. The murders were carried out by Tex Watson, who was later sentenced to life in prison, under the direction of cult leader Charles Manson. Watson took Manson Family cult members Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel to the home of Tate and Polanski and instructed them to "destroy everyone in it".

In doing do, actress and model Sharon Tate (who was eight months pregnant), her former lover Jay Sebring, screenwriter Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger (heiress to Folger's coffee fortune), and an eighteen year old Steven Parent (who had been unfortunately been driving by the scene) were all murdered. Watson, Atkins, and Krenwinkel were all given life sentences for their actions with the Manson Family. Linda Kasabian was used as the key witness during the trial and was not given prison time as she had not been directly involved in the murders of the five victims.
10. Actor Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed during the filming of "Twilight Zone: The Movie" in 1982. What was the vehicle that crashed causing their deaths?

Answer: A Helicopter

On July 23, 1982, a tragic and somewhat preventable set of circumstances occurred on the set of "Twilight Zone: The Movie". Actor Vic Morrow was playing the role of a bigot and racist who was going to be sent back in time to suffer through various periods of persecution in modern history. At one point, his character was to protect two Vietnamese children during a Vietnam War scene. During a night scene, Morrow and the children were being pursued by a helicopter.

Tragedy struck when a special effect was detonated and the tail rotor of the helicopter was hit by the effect. Tragically, Morrow and Le were both decapitated by the rotor blades of the helicopter while Chen was crushed to death. The child actors were ages six and seven.

Director John Landis had not received permission to use child actors on the set of "Twilight Zone: The Movie" during the time of this accident. As he did not think he would get permission for a waiver that allowed children to work at night, he allowed two child actors named Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen on the set anyway. As a result of the incident, several millions of dollars were won through several lawsuits by the families of the child actors while Vic Morrow's family settled within a year of the incident for an undisclosed amount of money.
