Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. David William Duchovny was born on what date?

Answer: August 7, 1960

Duchovny was born on August 7, 1960 in New York. His father was a writer and publicist and his mother was a school administrator and teacher. Duchovny attended the private school The Collegiate School For Boys and was a classmate of John F. Kennedy, Jr.

After graduating (as valedictorian and head boy), he attended Princeton University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts. He played basketball while at Princeton and was a member of the Charter Club (which is a private eating club for upperclassmen).
2. Duchovny is an author as well as an actor. In 2015 he wrote his first novel, about a character named Elsie Bovary. What is the name of that book?

Answer: Holy Cow: A Modern-Day Dairy Tale

Duchovny wrote his first novel in 2015 about a wise-cracking cow and her farm animal companions who head out on an adventure. He's written other books as well, including "Miss Subways" in 2018, "Truly Like Lightning" in 2021, and "The Reservoir" (also in 2021).

The multi-talented Duchovny is a musician as well. In 2015 he released his first album, called "Hell or Highwater." All songs were written by Duchovny and he sings and plays guitar on the album.
3. Whom did David marry in 1997?

Answer: Tea Leoni

David and actress Tea Leoni dated for about eight weeks before getting married on May 13, 1997. They have two children and were together until 2008 when they separated. They reunited in 2009 but separated again in 2011. They divorced in 2014. I remember watching the "The X-Files" which was filmed in Vancouver, Canada for the first few seasons and enjoying the overcast, dark aesthetic that location brought to the show. Duchovny lived in Los Angeles and got tired of filming in Vancouver, particularly after his marriage to Leoni.

His request to move the show production to Los Angeles was accommodated and the show took on a new, sunnier look. In my opinion, that was a bad move! But if one of your main stars wants something, you give them what they're asking for I suppose.
4. What is the name of David's daughter?

Answer: Madelaine West

Duchovny's daughter was born April 13, 1999 and is named Madelaine West Duchovny. Three years later, on June 15, 2002, his son Kyd Miller Duchovny was born. Madelaine is also trying to make her way as an actress and appeared in a 2018 episode of "The X-Files". She goes by the name West and has also appeared in a 2018 TV movie called "Sick" and the show "The Magicians."
5. David played a transgender agent on the TV series "Twin Peaks".

Answer: True

David was in three episodes of "Twin Peaks" as DEA agent Denise Bryson from 1990 to 1991 and on another episode on 2017. Agent Bryson started out wearing women's clothes during a sting operation and then embraced her feminine side, taking on the name Denise and fully embracing a female identity.

Duchovny has had small parts in many TV shows, including "Life With Bonnie", "Sex and the City", "Space: Above and Beyond" and "Frasier." From 1992 to 1997 he starred in "Red Shoe Diaries" as presenter and host Jake Winters.
6. David has won a number of awards for his acting. In 1997 he won a Golden Globe for his work on what TV show?

Answer: The X-Files

Duchovny was nominated in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 for his work on "The X-Files" and took home the award for Best Actor in a Television Drama in 1997. In 1997 in addition to the Golden Globe he also won a Satellite Award. In 1996 he won a National TV Award for Most Popular Actor for the same TV show.

In 1999 he won an American Comedy Award for a guest appearance on "The Larry Sanders Show" and in 2008 he won a Golden Globe for his work on "Californication." He's had nominations for Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Saturn Awards.
7. In this 2000 film, David stars with Minnie Driver and plays a man who loses his wife. What is this film?

Answer: Return To Me

"Return To Me" was filmed in Chicago and released in 2000. Duchovny plays Bob Rueland, a husband who loses his wife (played by Joely Richardson) in a car accident. Her heart is transplanted to Grace Briggs (played by Minnie Driver). The film is a romantic comedy-drama that follows the relationship between Bob and Grace. The film received mixed reviews.
8. In the 1997 film "Playing God", David plays Eugene Sands, a man who loses his job because of his addiction to narcotics. What was Sands' former profession?

Answer: Doctor

"Playing God" was the first starring role for Duchovny following the success of "The X-Files." The movie is a crime thriller also starring Timothy Hutton and Angelina Jolie. Dr. Sands is hired by a crime lord named Raymond Blossom (played by Hutton) to work on his crew and accomplices if they're hurt and can't go to a hospital. Sands ends up in a relationship with Blossom's girlfriend Claire (played by Jolie). Unfortunately the film did not do well, either at the box office or with critics.
9. Who did David call as his life-line when he appeared on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire"?

Answer: his wife

David was the first celebrity to play on the first celebrity edition of the show. He played to raise money for the East Harlem School at Exodus House, a charity that was started by two friends of his that helped students who hadn't previously done well academically.

He used his first lifeline on a question about IBM's slogan, choosing to poll the audience. He then phoned his wife for the $64,000 question about where the Duomo is located (he could've asked anyone on this site!). She didn't give an answer in the time allotted so he used the 50/50 and the last of his lifelines.

He guessed Florence and got it right. He made it to the $250,000 question and got it wrong!! He ended up winning $32,000 for the charity.
10. David was working on his Ph.D. at Yale before leaving to become an actor.

Answer: true

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Princeton, Duchovny attended Yale and received his Masters. He started work on his Ph.D. but did not finish as he chose to pursue his acting career instead. His unfinished thesis is called "Magic and Technology in Contemporary Fiction and Poetry." Duchovny is a poet himself.

In 1982 he received an honorable mention from the Academy of American Poets for a poem he had written while at school.
