Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps one of the most famous pairs of illusionists of modern times, Penn and Teller have been amazing audiences since they first began performing together in 1975. Which of these names did they use in the early days of their show (at this time they were a trio)?

Answer: Asparagus Valley Cultural Society

The third member of the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society was Weir Chrisimer, who introduced Penn and Teller to each other. The show was not as intense and, well, gory, as it would later become, and involved more comedy elements.
2. Billed as "Two Minds With But a Single Thought", this married couple devised one of the most complex verbal codes ever to use in their mentalism stage show. They were Julius and Agnes Jorgensen, but what stage name did they use?

Answer: Zancig

Julius and Agnes began performing their mentalist routine in the 1880s and were incredibly popular. They also wrote books on various occult and divination techniques. After Agnes died, Julius continued the act with several new partners until he retired from the stage in the 1920s.
Parts of their communication code have been published over the years, but nobody has ever worked out all of it, and it is thought that Julius took his secrets to the grave.
3. Award winning illusionist duo Barry Jones and Stuart MacLeod have presented several very successful shows which have aired around the world. They caused controversy in 2005 when they made a TV special using which topic as the basis of their illusions?

Answer: The Miracles of Jesus

"The Magic of Jesus" was Barry and Stuart's Christmas Special, and was shown in the US in December 2005. It was slated by critics and denounced as "deliberately offensive", but that didn't stop the making of a follow up show, "Tricks From the Bible", the following year.
In 2009, the magicians won the Best Comedy Illusionist Award at the World Magic Awards.
4. When Mr. Blackstone Sr, renowned for his "Floating Lightbulb" illusion, died, the main street of his home town in Michigan was named after him. His son was also well known as a magician, but possibly most famous for the time his act went very publicly wrong. What was their shared first name?

Answer: Harry

Blackstone Senior's original "floating lightbulb" illusion was actually made for him by none other than Thomas Edison. When he died it was donated to the Smithsonian Museum, and was among their very first "magic related" artefacts.
His son, Harry Junior, became (in)famous after he was booked to perform the half time show at the Orange Bowl American football match in 1987, and almost every single one of his tricks went horribly wrong.
5. Claude Yarbrough and his wife are one of only a handful of acts to have won the prestigious "Magical Act of the Year Award" twice. Mrs. Yarbrough was also the first woman ever admitted to the Inner Circle of the British Magic Circle. How are the couple better known?

Answer: Jonathan and Charlotte Pendragon

Although they were already world famous after appearing on various television shows in around fifty countries, the Pendragons still entered the "America's Got Talent" competition in 2008. They made it to the second stage of competition, but were not selected for the final forty acts.
6. Possibly the most successful Indian magicians of all time all belong to one family, and they have so dedicated themselves to their art that several members have actually died on stage during a show. In 2000, the then youngest performing member of the family "vanished" the Taj Mahal for two minutes. What is the family name?

Answer: Sorcar

The name P.C. Sorcar is famous in India. The first "P.C." was Protul Chandra, who performed from the 1930s until his death, during a performance in Japan, in 1971. His sons P.C Sorcar Junior, and P.C Sorcar Young both followed in his footsteps as illusionists, and it was P.C. Jnr. who famously vanished not only the Taj Mahal, but a train full of people.
7. British magician Paul Daniels is famous for his "you're going to like this, not a lot, but you'll like it" catchphrase. His "lovely assistant" eventually became his second wife when they married in 1988. What is her name?

Answer: Debbie McGee

The "Paul Daniels Magic Show" aired in the UK for fifteen years from 1979. The 1985 Easter Special show was awarded the Golden Rose at that year's Montreux Festival.
Paul and Debbie met when she auditioned for a part in his summer show in 1979, and they fell in love. She was once famously "put on the spot" by Caroline Aherne in her "Mrs. Merton's TV Show" when she asked "So Debbie, what first attracted you to millionaire Paul Daniels?" but took it in good part, and celebrated her twentieth wedding anniversary with Paul in 2008. The question was actually later voted second place in a UK Gold TV Channel poll of "Viewer's favourite one-liners of all time".
Paul returned to UK television screens when he took part in the 2010 series of "Strictly Come Dancing" (The UK version of "Dancing With the Stars".)
8. This couple were declared the "Canadian Magicians of the Year" in 2005, by the Canadian Association of Magicians, and have also won several other prestigious awards for their illusion act. Who are they?

Answer: Murray and Teresa Hatfield

Murray Hatfield was originally a solo act, and met Teresa in the early 1990s when she worked as a dancer on his show. Three years later she joined him as his assistant and partner in the act, and they have toured and performed together all over the world.
9. Scott and Muriel had the distinction of being the only illusionists invited to take part in the Cirque du Soleil's "Solstrum" television series, in 2003. Which of these best describes their act?

Answer: Slapstick comedy

Scott and Muriel are husband and wife, and their slapstick comedy magic act has won them awards in both Europe and North America. They were even awarded the "Golden Clown" award at the 2009 World Festival of Clowns, held in Russia.
10. Between 1990 and 2003, Siegfried and Roy were one of the most popular acts on the Las Vegas stage. Their 'magic word' was SARMOTI. The SAR stands for Siegfried And Roy, but what was the meaning of MOTI?

Answer: Masters of the Impossible

Siegfried and Roy used white tigers in their act, and performed with no barriers between them and the audience. In 2003, a lady in the audience did something that upset one of the tigers, and Roy placed himself between it and her. The tiger bit him and caused severe damage to the nerves in his neck, which meant the duo had to give up performing.
From 1997 onwards, the pair set up a charitable foundation and a "College of Magic", which awarded grants to disadvantaged youngsters in South Africa, to help them start a career in magic or illusionism.
