In 1768, he became the 6th president of the College of New Jersey, (now known as Princeton). In early 1776 he was elected to the Continental Congress. In late 1776, he shut down and evacuated the College of New Jersey at the approach of British forces and after the war, he devoted his life to rebuilding the college.

In November 1794, John Witherspoon passed away.
