quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The poem 'Azure and Gold' was written by which Pulitzer Prize winning poet and sister to astronomer Percival?

Answer: Amy Lowell

'Azure and Gold' was included in Amy Lowell's book 'A Dome of Many-Colored Glass' published in 1912. The poem is an ode to nature, comparing it to a brilliant gem: "Centre stone of the crown of the world, 'sincerity' graved on your youth, and your eyes hold the blue-bird flash, the sapphire shaft, which is truth." A Massachusetts native who lived from 1874-1925, Lowell's brother Percival instituted the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, from which the former planet Pluto was discovered. Amy Lowell was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1926 for the collection 'What's O'Clock'.
2. "Blue - no, yellowwwwwww". In which comedy troupe's 1975 film was Sir Galahad tossed into the Gorge of Eternal Peril for being indecisive about his favorite color?

Answer: Monty Python

The film was 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', a slightly demented retelling of the King Arthur legend. In the film, the knights had to answer three questions in order to cross the Bridge of Death over the Gorge of Eternal Peril. The brave Sir Lancelot (John Cleese) successfully answered the questions about his name, his quest and his favorite color, which was blue.

When asked the same questions, Michael Palin's Sir Galahad tried to change his answer on his color choice only to be catapulted to his likely death.
3. Which haunting song named for a pale shade of blue appeared on Peter Gabriel's 2002 album 'Up'?

Answer: Sky Blue

Peter Gabriel claimed that he had worked on this song for years and that it wasn't until he heard the voices of the band Blind Boys of Alabama that he was able to put the finishing touches on it. Variations of the song appeared in the pieces 'Ngankarrparni' and 'Cloudless' in the 2002 film 'Rabbit Proof Fence', for which Gabriel contributed the soundtrack.
4. Author Ramona Lofton's first novel 'Push' was made into a 2009 Academy Award nominated film 'Precious'. By what blue gemstone name is Lofton known?

Answer: Sapphire

Lofton decided to use the name Sapphire as her pen-name because of its association with the 'angry black woman' stereotype, such as the Sapphire Stevens character on the 'Amos 'n' Andy' show. Pre-completion interest in Lofton's novel about abuse and incest led to a bidding war, and the book was a best-seller following its 1996 release.

The film version renamed 'Precious', released in 2009, received six Academy Award nominations and won a Best Supporting Actress award for actress/comedian Mo'Nique.
5. This folk singer had a fondness for colors, but he had better success with 'Mellow Yellow' than this song. Which singer-songwriter released 'Turquoise' in 1965?

Answer: Donovan

Donovan Leitch, who performed under his first name, became popular in the mid-1960s with the Dylanesque song 'Catch the Wind'. The song 'Turquoise' was his fourth single and was allegedly written for fellow folk-singer Joan Baez. It wasn't a hit for Donovan in the US, but it did reach the Top 40 in the U.K. Apparently John Lennon liked it; it was one of the singles in his jukebox according to the PBS program, cleverly named 'John Lennon's Jukebox'.
6. Badfinger's song 'Baby Blue' is forever linked with the demise of Walter White. On which TV show did Mr. White operate a blue methamphetamine empire?

Answer: Breaking Bad

Bryan Cranston won multiple Emmy awards for his portrayal of Walter White, the mild-mannered chemistry teacher turned meth lord in 'Breaking Bad'. The Badfinger song from their 1971 album 'Straight Up' had been a modest hit for them on the U.S. charts in 1972, but after being featured in the ending scene of the 'Breaking Bad' series finale in 2013, the song re-entered the Billboard charts with over 37,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a music sales tracking firm.

The Tommy James and the Shondells' song 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' also benefited from being featured during the show's run.
7. Which character from the world of science fiction travels through time and space in a blue, 1950s British police box called the TARDIS?

Answer: The Doctor ('Doctor Who')

Since the first episode in 1963, 'Doctor Who' has been one of the BBC's most popular programmes, broadcast all around the world to millions of fans. The "classic" series ran from 1963 to 1989, with a television film released in 1996. It was revived in 2005 to critical acclaim and began its domination of the science fiction genre once again.

The titular character, the Doctor, defeats all manner of enemies and travels to far off times and planets in his trusty blue police box called the TARDIS (standing for Time and Relative Dimension in Space).

This sentient time machine hasn't always been on its best behaviour, but it has been the Doctor's longest and closest companion and has played an important role in both the programme's history and British culture too.
8. 'Pokemon Blue' was one of the very first games in the long-running and hugely popular 'Pokemon' series of video games. For which handheld system was 'Pokemon Blue' developed in the late 1990s?

Answer: Game Boy

Originally, the first two games in the series were 'Red' and 'Green' when released in their native Japan. When the series hit the west, 'Green' was changed to 'Blue' and the phenomenon began. The crux of the series focuses on catching and taming wild creatures called Pokemon, and training them up to participate in battles with other Pokemon. Along the way, players prove the strength of their Pokemon by battling Gym Leaders in various cities.

In 2004, 'Pokemon Red' and 'Pokemon Blue' were given a makeover and re-released for the Game Boy Advance as 'Pokemon FireRed' and 'Pokemon LeafGreen', respectively.
9. 'Blue Harvest' was the title used to disguise the filming of which 'Star Wars' film?

Answer: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

In order to avoid increased fees from services and huge throngs of avid fans potentially disrupting production, 'Return of the Jedi' went under the working title of 'Blue Harvest' to throw people off the scent of this high-profile final entry in an epic film trilogy.

It was the work of Howard Kazanjian, the film's producer, who constructed an elaborate ruse based around a fictional horror film called 'Blue Harvest', even going as far as to have merchandise with logos on it that the crew would wear and use to disguise their true filming intentions.

The animated television series 'Family Guy' parodied 'A New Hope' in 2007 with 'Family Guy: Blue Harvest', paying homage to this particular event in 'Star Wars' history.
10. What type of animal is Sonic, the blue, quick-footed video game character from his eponymous series of games by Sega?

Answer: Hedgehog

'Sonic the Hedgehog' was released in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive and marked the first proper video game outing for Sonic (having previously had a minor role in arcade racing game 'Rad Mobile'). Since then, Sonic has been the mascot of Sega and friendly rival to Nintendo's mascot, Mario.

In most games, Sonic is fighting off an evil threat posed by his archenemy, Dr. Robotnik. While the series and, indeed, Sonic started out in a 2D perspective, it slowly moved to a 3D, third-person view as console technology progressed, allowing for some interesting new level designs and features. Sonic the Hedgehog himself has even crossed over into Nintendo games and teamed up with Mario and company in such titles as 'Super Smash Bros. Brawl' and the 'Mario & Sonic at the Olympics' series.
