Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the lovable pink feline who used quips such as "Heavens to Mergatroyd" and "Exit! Stage Left (or Right)"?

Answer: Snagglepuss

In 1959, the cartoon inventor duo of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created a nervous, pink mountain lion by the name of Snagglepuss. Daws Butler provided the voice and Snagglepuss first appeared on The Quick Draw McGraw Show. After, he became a regular on The Yogi Bear Show.

Interestingly, Bert Lahr, the actor who played Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz" original from 1939, was the person who first used Snagglepuss' catchphrase, "Heavens to Mergatroyd". He used it in a 1944 movie called "Meet the People".
2. This little hillbilly was an ornery, sawed-off cuss, who thirty-five+ years after his advent in 1934 found a Saturday morning home alongside Beetle Bailey and Krazy Kat. Who's the scraggly-moustached fellow, whose most famous catchphrases were "Great Balls 'O Fire" and "time's a wastin'"?

Answer: Snuffy Smith

Snuffy Smith was a short, rambunctious, hillbilly character invented in 1934 by Billy DeBeck. Snuffy sang this theme song at the top of his lungs to open his cartoons.
Uh-uh-oh! Great balls o' fire, I'm bodacious!
Uh-uh-oh! Great balls o' fire, I'm a fright!
Uh-uh-oh! Great balls o' fire, goodness gracious!
I'm chop-chop-chop-chop-choppin' with all o' my might-YEA!
With his ample wife, Loweezy, and baby named "tater", the Smith hillbilly family is still seen in syndication in 21 countries and 11 languages. King Features Syndicate released 50 Snuffy Smith 'toons' in 1963.
3. This narcissistic cartoon character's catchphrases were "She wants me" and "OOHHhh Mama", but he was likely more recognizable by his Elvis Presley style voice, his personal attire, and his slicked back blonde hair. Which character, who appeared in 1997 and wore tight black t-shirts, smallish jeans, and sunglasses, am I referring to?

Answer: Johnny Bravo

Johnny Bravo is a beefcake young man who has a pompadour hairstyle and sounds and acts somewhat like Elvis Presley. The plots of his 'toons' have him involved in crazy escapades while trying to get women to fall in love with him. Even though Johnny is an easy-going, lovable fellow, the humour of his cartoons comes when poor Johnny's efforts end up with him getting thumped and dumped by the target of his affections.
4. "Sufferin' Succotash", was one of the catchphrases for this 'bird lover'. Which famous cartoon feline with a lisp uttered these words?

Answer: Sylvester J. Pussycat Sr. from the "Bugs Bunny Roadrunner Show"

The cat was a "bird lover" alright, not because he befriended them, but because he liked to eat them! Sylvester J. Pussycat Sr.(yep, that was his full name!) was always spending his time trying to catch Granny's lovable pet yellow canary "Tweety" for the sake of making a meal out of it.

The lispy-speeched feline made his cartoon debut in Friz Freleng's 1945 animated short, "Life With Feathers". It wasn't until 1947 that he actually made his 1st appearance with his little nemesis, Tweety in the production "Tweety Pie".
5. This little mutt was ten times tougher than his big uncle who would run and hide from the spooks his uncle and friends encountered. What tough pup would bravely utter "Lemme at 'em! I'll splat 'em!" while his uncle would run away?

Answer: Scrappy-Doo

The word "spooks" should have given it away. His full name is Scrappy Cornelius Doo and he is a Great Dane puppy created by the famous cartoon agency, Hanna-Barbera Productions. Scrappy, nephew of the famous Scooby-Doo, is a complete opposite of his Uncle Scooby's character and would always try to stand up and fight the "monsters" and "villains" that Scooby and his team of friends would meet in their mysterious adventures.

But Scrappy was always reluctantly dragged away to a safe haven by his cowardly Uncle, who because of linguistic challenges pronounced his own name, "Rooby Roo".
6. This fellow, despite being a God-fearing man and all-around good person, is despised and loathed by his neighbour who is the main character in a long- running and popular cartoon show, Who, with the catchphrase, "Hi Diddly Do", am I speaking of?

Answer: Ned Flanders

Voiced by Harry Shearer, Nedward "Ned" Flanders first appeared on the premier episode of "The Simpsons". A devout Christian and somewhat of a timid pushover, Ned is one of only a few characters on this brash cartoon series who can be described as a genuinely, well-mannered, and good-natured person. His last name actually comes from Flanders Street in Portland, Oregon, which is the hometown of Matt Groening, who is the creator of "The Simpsons". Ned owns a store in Springfield called "The Leftorium" which retails products designed especially for left-handed people.
7. "Andale! Andale! Arriba! Arriba!" was what this cartoon character would happily yell as he ran wildly into and out of trouble. What's the name of this lively rodent who is always standing up for his weakling friends?

Answer: Speedy Gonzales from "Merrie Melodies"

Speedy Gonzales, known as "the fastest mouse in all of Mexico", loved to yell "Andale Andale Arriba Arriba"! as he would sprint crazily around, near, and over his main nemesis, Sylvester J. Cat, whom Speedy nicknamed "El Gringo Pussygato". "Andale Andale Arriba Arriba actually is a Spanish phrase for Go On! Go On! Up! Up! After he was re-designed by his inventors, Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt in 1955, his first cartoon titled "Speedy Gonzales", won the Academy Award that year for Best Short Subject.
8. I always felt sorry for this next character who came from a long-running cartoon strip named after a salty snack. Who was it that was always exclaiming "Good Grief!"?

Answer: Charlie Brown

Poor ol' Charlie Brown was always being called a "blockhead" and was often the target for the other little characters from the long-running comic strip titled "Peanuts". Always the subject of blame and often made fun of, he'd let out a mournful "Good Grief".

The writer of this world famous cartoon strip, Charles Schulz, originally named it "L'il Folks", which was changed to "Peanuts", after the "Peanut Gallery" on the "Howdy Doody Show", when it went into syndication in 1950. The last "Peanuts" strip ran on Feb.13th, 2000, giving it a run of just a few months short of fifty years.
9. This animated character's favourite self-promoting catchphrase claimed that he was "smarter than the average bear". What cartoon bear was constantly in trouble with Ranger Smith for swiping "pic-a-nic baskets" from park tourists?

Answer: Yogi

Yogi Bear, another of Hanna-Barbera's creations, lived in Jellystone Park. This 'too lazy to hunt for food" bear often had park ranger Smith chasing him down because he would swipe park visitor's picnic baskets. (Yogi referred to them as "pick-a-nic baskets.) His best friend, a kind little bear named Boo Boo, was always trying his best to keep Yogi out of trouble.

The year 2008 marked Yogi Bear's 50th anniversary in the cartoon business.
10. Where would a quiz about cartoon catchphrases be without the following character's saying. Which one of Warner Brother's extremely famous characters once stated, "I shoulda taken that left toin at Albakoykey"?

Answer: Bugs Bunny

Of course it's Bugs Bunny! More famous for his catchphrase, "What's Up Doc?", Bugs was named "the most famous cartoon character of all time" by TV Guide. Who can argue with that esteemed title, since after Bugs' official inception into the cartoon world in July, 1940, the lovable animated rabbit has starred in over 160 cartoons, appeared in his own full-length movies, garnered an Academy Award, and even has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 2010 he celebrated his 70th year in the animation business.
