Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the powerful Dallas family who owned ranches and oil companies in the TV series "Dallas"?

Answer: Ewing

"Dallas" was an extremely popular primetime soap that ran for fourteen seasons. The head of the family was Jock Ewing (Jim Davis) until he passed away during season five. Jock owned Ewing Oil while his wife Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) inherited the family ranch. Much of the drama on the show involved their sons J.R. and Bobby (Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy) as they battled for control of the family company. J.R. was one of the most notorious TV villains of all times and there was no bar too low for him to cross. Bobby was more careful but also had his moments.

Other sources of drama were J.R.'s infidelity to his wife Sue Ellen (Linda Grey), Bobby's wife Pamela (Victoria Principal) never feeling quite at home at Southfork Ranch and the ongoing rivalry between the Ewings and the Barneses, led by Pamela's brother Cliff (Ken Kercheval).
2. What is the name of the serial character who terrorizes Texans in the film series "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"?

Answer: Leatherface

Leatherface is the primary antagonist in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise. He is mute and wears a mask of human skin. He acts largely under the orders of his family members who use his victims bones to make furniture. Leatherface suffers from mental illness, which is exploited by those around him.

Leatherface is one of the most iconic horror movie killers of all time. He has appeared in many entries in the film series' run since he debuted in 1974. In that film he was played by Gunnar Hansen.
3. Which of the following is NOT true regarding Texas folk legend Pecos Bill?

Answer: He was raised by wolves

According to legend, Pecos Bill was raised by coyotes after he fell out of a covered wagon as a baby. He even believed he was a coyote for a while until his real brother took him back home.

Among the many legends surrounding Pecos Bill was that he ate dynamite and used a rattlesnake as a lasso. In order to impress his girlfriend Slue-Foot Sue, she shot all the stars out of the sky except one (creating the Texas Lone Star). Slue-Foot Sue was also a popular folk legend, she was said to have ridden a giant catfish around the Rio Grande River and foot a Baba Yaga in Russia.
4. Ace and Dicky Speck are the Texas slave drivers who sell which titular slave (played by Jamie Foxx) in a 2012 Academy Award-winning film?

Answer: Django

"Django Unchained" begins with Ace and Dicky Speck selling Django to Dr. Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz promises Django he will free him once he helps him find his former owners. Schultz keeps his promise to Django once the mission is complete and helps Django locate his wife Hidi (Kerry Washington) whom he was separated from when she was sold to a different plantation.
5. Which of the main characters from "The Big Bang Theory" was originally from East Texas?

Answer: Sheldon

Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) was born in East Texas. Growing up, Sheldon was extremely brilliant but struggled with this part of him as there was no one he could relate to in conservative and (in his opinion) simple-minded Texas. His mother was extremely religious, something Sheldon and her often disagree over.

Sheldon's life as a child in Texas was spun off into its own series called "Young Sheldon" starring Iain Armitage.
6. What is the last name of Hank, Peggy and Bobby, an animated family from Arlen, Texas?

Answer: Hill

Hank Hill is the main character on "King of the Hill". He is a propane salesman and stereotypical manly man. He represents the "good old days" where everything was traditional such as men working and women at home. His wife is Peggy Hill, a substitute teacher.

She often gets annoyed with Hank's attitude and seeming indifference to other people's emotions. Their son is the rambunctious Bobby Hill. Also living with the Hills is Peggy's niece Luanne Platter, who is both promiscuous and vengeful but a sweetheart nonetheless.
7. Travis Coates is the young Texas boy who owns which popular dog, named after the color his fur?

Answer: Old Yeller

Old Yeller was named because his golden fur appeared dull yellow. Old Yellow is one of the most famous fictional dogs. He debuted in the 1956 novel "Old Yeller" where he is a stray dog whom Travis adopts. Old Yeller is initially not liked by Travis but over time Old Yeller becomes one of the family.

The dog saved the family time and time again, especially Travis' younger brother Arliss from a bear.
8. What kind of animal is Sandy Cheeks, one of SpongeBob Squarepants' closest friends?

Answer: Squirrel

Sandy is a squirrel originally from Texas before she moved to her tree dome in Bikini Bottom. Many of Sandy's mannerisms are stereotypical of Texans, including her accent. Because Sandy is a squirrel, she wears a spacesuit to breath underwater (a reference to Texas' many astronauts).

Her dome is also air sealed with a large tree growing in the center where she sleeps during hibernation. In the Christmas special, it is revealed that Sandy is the one who introduced Christmas to Bikini Bottom.
9. Former Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae become cattle ranchers in which Larry McMurtry novel that shares its name with the town they live in?

Answer: Lonesome Dove

"Lonesome Dove" is a 1986 novel that won the Pulitzer Prize that year. It centers around a group of former Texas Rangers who entered the cattle ranching business. The main storyline is the group's journey and struggles to bring the cattle drive north to water and for grazing.

The book was adapted into a 1989 film starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as Gus and Woodrow, respectively.
10. What sport is coached by Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) on the TV series "Friday Night Lights"?

Answer: Football

"Friday Night Lights" is set in Dillon, Texas, a small town where football is extremely popular and important. The main character is Coach Taylor who is the local high school football coach. Much of the series focuses on the coach's personal and coaching life which often cross paths. Coach Taylor is hugely influential to many of his players who look up to him as a father figure. Connie Britton plays Taylor's wife Tami, the school guidance counsellor who often has to cool her husband down when he gets heated or too focused on football.
