Ren and Ariel fight to have the ban overturned so their senior class can hold a prom.

The story flashes back in time to the 1840s where we meet John Ferrier who is lost in the desert with a little girl he later adopts named Lucy. They are rescued by Mormons and are assimilated into the community. However, Mormons are considered unfavorable people at this time even to John Ferrier who was saved by them. The local community of Mormon elders forbid Lucy to marry a non Mormon and attempt to marry her off to several prominent men, one of which is the murder victim.

On the series "Big Love", Bill Henrickson is a fundamentalist Mormon from Utah who practices polygamy despite the Church of Latter Day Saints and the state of Utah banning the practice. Bill has three wives, Barb, Nicki and Margie (Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Savingy and Ginnifer Goodwin) and several children with each of them.

However, Barbara is considered his main wife and the one legally recognized. Bill also had another wife named Ana at one point and also had many affairs with other women. Bill and his wives claim to be married to each other and much of the plot of series deals with their struggles of living in this unconventional relationship.
