Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Charlton Heston

Answer: Mel Brooks

Moses is the common role.

Charlton Heston played Moses in the classic film "The Ten Commandments" (1956). With a film career spanning 60 years, Heston starred in many notable films such as "Antony and Cleopatra", "Planet of the Apes", and "Ben Hur", for which he won an Oscar. Heston's passions also included politics and activism. He took part in MLK's 1963 civil rights march in Washington, and was the president of the National Rifle Association for 5 years. Heston was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003 for his achievements in politics and film.

Multitalented Mel Brooks is a producer, writer, actor, director, and comedian. Well known for such classic comedies as "Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles", and "Spaceballs"; Brooks played the part of Moses in his film "History of the World: Part I". An entertainer at heart from a young age, Brooks learned to play the drums from Buddy Rich and took his act on the road to the Catskills. Brooks started in television as a writer on "Your Show of Shows". The list of awards and accolades this legendary man has received is jaw dropping, but the bit of trivia I found truly interesting about Brooks is that when he served in WWII, his job was to defuse landmines.
2. Halle Berry

Answer: Eartha Kitt

Berry and Kitt both played the part of Catwoman in the "Batman" franchise.

Eartha Kitt overcame an incredibly difficult childhood to became a star of stage, screen, and television. Beginning her career with a dance troupe, Kitt moved on to become a nightclub singer in Paris. It was there that she was discovered by none other than Orson Welles, who described her as "the most exciting woman alive" and cast her as Helen of Troy in "Dr. Faustus". Kitt replaced Julie Newmar as Catwoman on the campy TV series "Batman" in the show's third season. Perhaps best known for her recording of the perennial Christmas favorite "Santa Baby", ironically Kitt died on Christmas day, 2008.

Former Miss Teen Ohio, Miss Teen America, and first runner-up of the Miss U.S.A. Pageant, Berry played the titular role of Catwoman in the 2004 film. Her portrayal of Catwoman earned Berry a Worst Actress Razzie Award, which she accepted in person, the first actress to do so. On the flipside, Berry has the distinction of being the first black actress to win a Best Actress Oscar for her role in "Monster's Ball" (2001).
3. Lynda Carter

Answer: Gal Gadot

Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman is the common role here.

Actress, singer, and former Miss U.S.A., Carter dropped out of college to pursue a music career. Gary Burghoff (Radar in the show 'M*A*S*H') played drums in one of the bands she performed with.

During the making of "Wonder Woman", Carter didn't shy away from doing her own stunts, much to the producers' dismay. She even did one stunt where she was dangling from a helicopter.

Carter was also cast for the movie "Apocalypse Now", but was cut from the film when she had to start work on "Wonder Woman" before "Apocalypse Now" was done filming. Her role was given to Colleen Camp. Carter can, however, be seen in the 2001 Redux version of the film as Miss May, the 'Playboy' centerfold.

Another interesting tidbit about the multitalented Carter, is she voiced multiple characters in 'The Elder Scrolls' games, as well as being the voice of Magnolia in the game 'Fallout 4'. In addition to voice acting in 'Fallout 4', Carter also composed an original musical score for the game.

At 18, Gal Gadot won the 2004 Miss Israel pageant. Following that, she served her mandatory two years in the Israeli Defense Forces and then enrolled in school to study law.

While still a student, Gadot was asked to audition for the role of Bond's love interest in the film 'Quantum of Solace'. She didn't get the part, but she did get a taste of acting and found it much more interesting than law school.

Playing Gisele in the 2009 movie 'Fast and Furious' was her first movie role, which she reprised in three more films in the franchise. Her first chance to play Wonder Woman was in 2016's 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice', just one year before the 2017 blockbuster 'Wonder Woman'.
4. Helen Mirren

Answer: Claire Foy

Both Mirren and Foy portrayed Queen Elizabeth II.

Dame Helen Mirren was born Lydia Petrovna Mironova and is descended from Russian aristocracy and a Napoleonic war hero. She fell in love with acting at the young age of thirteen, and by the age of 20 had landed the role of Cleopatra in a stage production of "Antony and Cleopatra". However, it wasn't until Mirren was 62 that she landed the role which finally secured her spot on the A-list, as well as her first Oscar win. That was the role of Elizabeth II in the movie "The Queen".

Born in 1984 in Stockport, England, Foy's first role was in the pilot of TV show "Being Human" in 2008. Since then her career has really taken off. Foy had roles in "Little Dorrit" (2008 mini-series), "The Promise" (2011 mini-series), and TV series "Upstairs/Downstairs" (2010-2012) to name a few. She played the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the TV series "The Crown" (2016-2017). Her performance in "The Crown" earned Foy a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In 2017, Foy won the BAFTA for British Artist of the Year.
5. Chris Eccleston

Answer: David Tennant

Eccleston and Tennant have both played an incarnation of The Doctor in the TV series "Doctor Who".

Eccleston played the ninth doctor in the long running British science fiction series "Doctor Who". Ironically, he was not a big fan of the original series, but was a big fan of the Manchester United Football Club. However, he found he was better suited for an acting career than an athletic one. His portrayal of the Doctor earned Eccleston three awards: National Television Awards, UK (Most Popular Actor), SFX Awards, UK (Best TV Actor), and TV Quick Awards, UK (Best Actor). Interestingly Eccleston was offered the role of the eigth doctor, but turned it down.

Classical actor David Tennant followed Eccleston to become the tenth doctor. Of Scottish heritage, Tennant was born David John McDonald. He changed his name for professional reasons since there was already a registered actor named David McDonald.

At the precocious age of 3 or 4, Tennant's love of "Doctor Who" inspired him to be an actor. Throughout his school years, every paper he had to write for a class had some connection to "Doctor Who", landing him in a bit of hot water. From time travelling hero ("Doctor Who"), to nefarious villain (Kilgrave, "Jessica Jones"), to starring on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Tennant seems to have a gift of making any role his own. Of 25 awards Tennant has won to date, 11 were for "Doctor Who" alone.

Tennant's wife, Georgia Moffett, is the daughter of Peter Davison - who played the fifth Doctor in the series. Moffett also played Tennant's daughter in the episode "Doctor Who: The Doctor's Daughter".
6. Jim Caviezel

Answer: Claude Heater

The common role here is Jesus.

Originally pursuing a career in professional basketball, Caviezel suffered an injury in his sophomore year that put an end to that dream. While recovering, Caviezel decided to aim for a career in acting, but still credits basketball for his success, saying "... basketball took me to college and gave me discipline. It prepared me to be an actor, and it kept me from walking away and quitting when times got tough."

Like many actors, Caviezel began his career on stage, then moved on to minor roles in films. Diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, Caviezel's struggle with them might account for why many directors turned him away because of his 'intensity'. Caviezel's first real break came when he landed a role in the film "The Thin Red Line", but his truly breakthrough role was as Jesus Christ in "The Passion of the Christ".

Having been told he was auditioning for a surfing movie, Caviezel was surprised to find himself being offered the role of Jesus Christ by Mel Gibson, Director of the controversial movie. The filming was absolutely brutal on Caviezel. Some of the taping was done in frigid weather while he was wearing nothing more than a loincloth, which led to his suffering hypothermia. Additionally, during the whipping scenes he was accidentally lashed twice, he separated his shoulder during the carrying the cross scene, and suffered migraines from the crown of thorns.

This one was tough as Claude Heater's role as Jesus in the classic "Ben Hur" was uncredited. The story, however, is worth the telling. Heater, a practicing Mormon, was not an actor; he was an opera singer. Training hard with vocal coaches, Heater became a successful baritone. He was performing in Rome when the production manager for "Ben Hur" saw Heater, and heard him sing. Thinking Heater's voice was magnificent, and that his face had a spiritual quality, he urged that Heater be tested for the part of Jesus. Heater auditioned for the role and everyone agreed he was perfect for it. It was ironic that they had to travel to Rome to find the California-born Heater. After filming, Heater returned to his chosen profession, but retrained his voice as a tenor.

Between his years as a baritone and tenor, Heater performed in such classic operas as 'Carmen', 'Il Travatore', 'Tristan & Isolde', and 'La Boheme'. He was also the director of the Oakland Opera of California from 1988-1990.
7. Anthony Hopkins

Answer: Dan Hedaya

Former president Richard Nixon is the common role.

Welsh born Sir Anthony Hopkins first developed an interest in acting after meeting another legendary Welsh actor - Richard Burton. He was so inspired by Burton that at only 15 yeras old, Hopkins enrolled in the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After two years of military service and more training, this time at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, another legend would impact Hopkins' life and career - Sir Laurence Olivier. Olivier mentored Hopkins, and Hopkins understudied Olivier at the Royal National Theater. Stepping in for Olivier during an appendicitis attack, Hopkins wowed the audience with his performance. Soon after, Hopkins was cast in "The Lion in Winter" (1968), starring alongside renowned actors Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn.

Hopkins maintained a solid stage and screen career throughout the 1970s and 80s, but it was 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs" that shot him to superstardom and earned him an Oscar. His unforgettable rendition of the psychopathic Dr. Hannibal Lecter belies the fact that his appearance in the movie totaled a whopping 17 minutes.

Hopkins played Richard Nixon in the titular 1995 movie "Nixon". He has also portrayed another president, John Quincy Adams, in "Amistad". He received Oscar nominations for both films.

Dan Hedaya portrayed Nixon in the 1999 comedy "Dick". Although Hedaya was also in Oliver Stone's "Nixon", it was only as a bit character named Trini Cardoza. Hedaya began acting during his undergrad days at Tufts University, but spent 7 years teaching junior high math and English before devoting himself to an acting career.

Hedaya's breakout role was as Nick Tortelli, Carla's dodgy husband in the 80s comedy series "Cheers". Hedaya has starred on stage with Al Pacino, has had multiple recurring roles in tv series, won three ensemble cast awards, and played Detective Jeff Rubin in "The Usual Suspects".
8. Johnny Depp

Answer: Jonathan Frid

Barnabas Collins of the "Dark Shadows" franchise is the common role.

Depp played Barnabas Collins in 2012s film adaptation "Dark Shadows", one of many collaborations with director Tim Burton. At 15 Depp dropped out of school and at 20 he married. In order to support himself and his wife, Depp became a ballpoint pen salesman. It was a chance meeting with Nicolas Cage that convinced Depp to try his hand at acting.

Depp's debut role was as one of the teenage victims in "A Nightmare on Elm Street". It was shortly thereafter that he landed his breakthrough role as Tommy Hanson in the tv series "21 Jump Street". Depp has developed a reputation for choosing unusual roles and quirky characters, such as the titular "Edward Scissorhands", Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Carribean" franchise, and the nervous Ichabod Crane in "Sleepy Hollow".

Probably best known as Barnabas Collins in TV's cult classic daytime drama "Dark Shadows", Jonathan Frid had a remarkable career. Having developed a love of acting early in life, he studied at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and went on to earn a Master's in Directing from Yale's drama school.

Prior to his role in "Dark Shadows", Frid spent time in prominent regional theaters, including the American Shakespeare Festival's "Much Ado About Nothing" with Katharine Hepburn and under the direction of John Houseman.

For a few years after the end of "Dark Shadows", Frid had some film roles, including a part in Oliver Stone's directorial debut, "Seizure". He soon returned to his theatrical roots, and joined a Broadway production of "Arsenic and Old Lace" (in the role of the murderous nephew).

In 1986, Frid founded his own production company so he could tour with his one man shows, using it as a venue to raise money for various charities.

Frid had a cameo in Depp's "Dark Shadows" film; sadly Frid passed away two weeks before the movie's opening.
9. Fay Wray

Answer: Naomi Watts

Did you know that the name of the character King Kong was obsessed with was Ann Darrow? That's the role these two actresses have in common.

While many of the stars in this quiz developed a love of acting at a young age, Wray actually began her career very young, barely in her teens. Born in 1907, she started as an extra then landed roles as the heroine in westerns beginning in the silent movie era. Nicknamed 'The Scream Queen', Wray was approached and offered a part with a 'tall, dark leading man'. They didn't bother mentioning it was a tall, dark gorilla. "King Kong" was the peak of Wray's career, which began declining rapidly after its release. Wray had a minor comeback in the 1950s but never again rose to the heights of success of "King Kong".

Living up to her "Queen of Remakes" nickname, Watts reprised the role of Ann Darrow in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake "King Kong". Filmed in New Zealand, Watts took a serious fall during filming but thankfully sustained no lasting injuries.

Born in England in 1968, Watts' father was Pink Floyd's road manager (he also provided the maniacal laughter on the Pink Floyd song "Money"). He died when she was just seven years old, and the remaining family eventually settled in Australia.

Also starting her career in her early teens, Watts did a number of bit parts in commercials until landing her first feature film "For Love Alone" (1986). Watts continued to take roles in undistinguished films until David Lynch, based just on her head shot, cast her in his 2001 "Mulholland Drive". It was just one year later that her role in the 2002 box office smash "The Ring" hit theaters. It was the sequel, "The Ring 2", that definitively established Watts as a box office draw.
10. George Clooney

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Both actors played Danny Ocean in the "Oceans" franchise.

With a father who was a news anchor and entertainer, aunt Rosemary Clooney, uncle Jose Ferrer, and cousin Miguel Ferrer - George Clooney had acting in his blood. Because of his entertainer father, Clooney was acting as young as 5 years old, but had his heart set on a career in baseball. A 16 year old Clooney managed to land a tryout with the Cincinnati Reds, but wasn't recruited for the team. Unsure what he wanted to do at that point, Clooney found work as a shoe salesman and a tobacco picker. It was his cousin, Miguel Ferrer, who kickstarted Clooney's acting bug when he got Clooney work on a film about horse racing. After that, Clooney moved to Los Angeles.

Then followed a stream of small television and movie roles, until he landed the breakthrough part of Dr. Doug Ross in the TV medical drama "ER". Clooney started getting movie roles and maintained a hectic pace filming both "ER" and movies. In 1999, Clooney left "ER" to focus on his film career. "Ocean's Eleven" (2001) was such a success that two sequels were made and Clooney played Danny Ocean in all three movies.

Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Sinatra was inspired early on to pursue a music career after seeing Bing Crosby perform. Starting in his high school glee club, Sinatra then began performing in small local clubs, and eventually sang his way to an invitation from Tommy Dorsey to join his band. 1943 saw the beginning of Sinatra's solo music as well as his film career. Things took a bit of a nosedive post-World War II, but Sinatra came back in a big way with 1953s "From Here to Eternity". From then on, Sinatra enjoyed continued success in both his musical and film careers. Sinatra played the original Danny Ocean in 1960s "Ocean's Eleven" with 'Rat Pack' buddies Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.
