Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Showtime TV series of eight seasons had the most episodes of any Showtime show until another Showtime show overtook it in 2018, and the movie with this title is about a prisoner in San Quentin who writes a play. What is the title?

Answer: Weeds

In 2012, when "Weeds", starring Mary-Louise Parker as a mother who turns to pot-dealing, entered its eighth and final season, it became the show with the most episodes of all Showtime Channel shows (102 episodes). It wasn't until 2018 when the Showtime show "Shameless" surpassed it, ending its run in 2021 with 134 episodes.

In the 1987 movie "Weeds" directed by John D. Hancock, noted for directing "Bang The Drum Slowly", the always reliable Nick Nolte plays Lee Umstetter, imprisoned for armed robbery.

After reading books from the prison library, and attending a performance for the prisoners of the play "Waiting for Godot", Lee starts writing plays about prison life, and staging them too.
2. From 2014 to 2015 there was a TV series on SyFy called "Dominion" that was a sort of sequel to a 2010 movie that had the same title as an unrelated TV show on FX about a schizophrenic boy with special abilities. What is the title of both these entertainments?

Answer: Legion

The movie "Legion" (2010) starred Paul Bettany as a fallen angel named Michael who comes to the aid of a group of people in a diner, after informing them that God has lost faith in the human race, and they might just be doomed. That "Dominion" show on SyFy takes place 25 years after the events of the movie "Legion".

As for the TV show "Legion", it was based on a Marvel comics hero named David Haller, whose alter ego is Legion. As a mutant, his superpowers were telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation. And telemarketing. No, just kidding about that last one.
3. Two unrelated movies (2001 and 2016) share this title, both with crime themes, one a comedy the other a drama. And the TV series with this title also has a death theme, and was nominated for an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy, as well as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. What's the title?

Answer: Russian Doll

The 2001 movie "Russian Doll" is a comedy starring Hugo Weaving as a private investigator who aspires to becoming a crime novelist. The 2016 "Russian Doll" drama involves a woman who witnesses a crime but is summarily abducted in the middle of her 911 phone call.
The Netflix TV show "Russian Doll" starred Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov, a woman who attends a party in a hipster New York apartment only to die later that evening and come back life to relive the night. She dies again though. And again, and again, etc. She tries to figure out why she is caught in this time loop.
4. This 1944 comedy starring the inimitable Cary Grant shares its title with what unrelated TV series (2011-2018) in which the lead actress Ginnifer Godwin actually met her real-life Prince Charming in the cast and married him?

Answer: Once Upon a Time

In the movie, "Once Upon a Time", Cary Grant plays a theatre producer named Jerry Flynn, a theatre producer who needs to get a hold of $1000,000 within a week, lest he lose his theatre. The TV show is one I actually worked on several times during its run.

It has an interesting premise. The town of Storybrooke, Maine is populated by people who are parallels to fairy tale characters we've all read and heard about for years. The characters all have names that are based on the fairy tales, i.e. actress Ginnifer Goodwin plays Mary Margaret Blanchard, whose parallel characters is Snow White ("Blanche" being French for "White"). Ms. Goodwin married actor Josh Dallas, (David Nolan, whose parallel character was "Prince Charming")
5. There is a 2005 American indie sci-fi movie with this title as well as a 2000 Japanese drama, 2014 Malaysian action-comedy, and a 2023 Filipino drama. The single-season TV show (2002) with the same title was unsuccessfully renewed despite two fan writing campaigns to FOX and to UPN. And the title of all these unrelated projects is what?

Answer: Firefly

You'll see "Firefly" on pretty much any list of TV shows deemed the best shows to get cancelled after only one season. It came from creator Joss Whedon ("Buffy The Vampire Slayer") and starred Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcom Reynolds of a Firefly-class spaceship called Serenity, in the year 2517.

There was a movie adaptation of this series in 2005, called "Serenity" from Universal Pictures. But the science fiction film called "Firefly" had nothing to do with the TV "Firefly" universe. Instead, that 2005 indie film was about a handful of people who experienced unfortunate events on Halloween, but their memory about exactly what is very vague.

But those loose ends do indeed come together in the surprise end.
6. There are two movies with this title: One is a 1994 drama with Linda Blair, and the other is a 2002 crime drama about two brothers on an Indian reservation. There are two TV shows that also have that same title: one is an American comedy-drama lasting one season in 2011, and the other was the original British series lasting 7 seasons (2007-2013) that the American version was based on. But both those TV shows are unrelated to the films. What is the title we're talking about?

Answer: Skins

Wings Hauser and Linda Blair play Joe and Maggie Joiner in the drama "Skins", about a separated couple who reunite when their son is murdered by Nazi-skinheads. In 2002's "Skins" Graham Greene plays Mogie Yellow Lodge, whose fellow Sioux brother is a police department investigator, looking into a murder on the Pine Ridge reservation.

The 2011 TV series "Skins" was about a group of high school students in Baltimore, that was an American remake of a British Channel 4 program that debuted in 2007, also named "Skins". Nicholas Hoult of Marvel's "X-Men" movies starred in it.
7. The 1984 film was about a coach, the 1988 film had very little dialogue, and the TV series is about a chef. What is the title that these three unrelated entertainments share?

Answer: The Bear

The director Jean-Jacques Annaud directed the 1984 film "The Bear" similarly to his 1981 film "Quest For Fire" in which there is almost no dialogue spoken by humans. In this story he focuses on an orphan bear cub taken under the wing (or paw) by an adult male bear. Hunters are the danger.

The 1988 film bio "The Bear" starred Gary Busey as legendary University of Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. The comedy-drama TV series on FX is about a young highbrow fine-dining chef who, after a death in the family, returns to run the family business, a lowbrow sandwich shop called the Original Beef of Chicagoland.
8. This next title has an astounding number of films and TV series: silent film features from 1917 and 1926, a 1931 film starring Joan Barry, a 1939 film starring George Sanders, a 1948 film starring Richard Attenborough, a 1961 film starring Tony Curtis, a 1979 movie starring Craig Wasson, a 1994 Western, a 2005 film starring Woody Allen, a 2014 film starring James Caan, a 2007 sci-fi film, a 2018 film starring Jared Leto, a 2019 movie starring country singer Trace Adkins, etc. The TV series with title include: a 1968 TV series starring one of my favorites, Darren McGavin, a 2020 series written by Stephen King, and so many other projects. What is this title?

Answer: The Outsider

"The Awakening", "Hero", and "Crash" are among the most commonly used movie titles according to an article in "The Guardian", but all the unrelated films and TV series mentioned in the question were titled, "The Outsider." On top of all those entertainments mentioned, there are films with the title "The Outsider" from Malaysia (2018), Italy (2018), documentary features from Great Britain (2018), and the USA (2021), and TV series from Great Britain (1983), Mexico (2021), and China (2023).

There are even two TV movies titled "The Outsider", and countless TV series episodes also titled "The Outsider."
9. A 2008 documentary feature examined the underbelly of a Utah County, and a 2014 feature documentary examined an American scandal. This British crime drama TV series had three seasons but spread out over the years 2014, 2016, and 2023. What is the title all three shared?

Answer: Happy Valley

The 2008 documentary titled "Happy Valley" explored a Utah County nicknamed "Happy Valley" that looked like paradise by some statistics, but also had some very dubious sociological distinctions. The Penn State football team is located in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania, and 2014 documentary feature turned a critical eye on the abuse scandal the school suffered at the hands of an assistant coach named Jerry Sandusky. "Happy Valley" the TV series in The United Kingdom, focused on the life and job of a fictitious Police Sergeant Catherine Cawood, in the Yorkshire area. There is also a low budget indie feature film called "Happy Valley" from 2007, and a 2012 TV movie with the same title.
10. In 1985, this feature became one of the biggest box-office disasters in British history. A TV series lasting two seasons from 2012-2014, was about a group of people fighting back against a militia that has taken over the United States after a world-wide disaster. What is the title these two share?

Answer: Revolution

"Revolution" was director Hugh Hudson's following film after his triumphant Best Picture Oscar win for "Chariots of Fire." "Revolution" however, starring Al Pacino as a Scottish trapper caught up in the whirlwind of the American Revolution disappointed critics and audiences alike.

The somewhat post-apocalyptic TV series "Revolution" costarred Giancarlo Esposito and Billie Burke. Some episodes had titles the same as Led Zeppelin songs and some episodes had titles named after Stephen King novels. There's also a 1968 documentary about San Francisco's counterculture called "Revolution" and a 2018 reality-TV show about dancing with the same title.
