Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the weeks that led to the 1990 'Survivor Series', the WWF promised a big surprise. What character emerged from the surprise egg at the 'Survivor Series'?

Answer: the Gobbledy-Gooker

The event actually had two surprises. The first surprise was, 'who would be the mystery partner on Ted Dibiase's team?' The other was, 'what would emerge from the egg?' Dibiase's partner ended up being the debuting Mark Calloway (Undertaker). He would end up being the WWF's most dominant superstar in the '90s.

The other surprise was the shortest lived and maybe the most embarrassing character in WWF history. Emerging from the egg was a man dressed in a goofy pseudo-turkey outfit. It didn't take long for the booing to start.

This was an instant bomb. It was very difficult to watch, yet it kept going. The Gooker returned for one night only for the 'Wrestlemania X7' Gimmick Battle Royal.
2. What was the name of Terry Taylor's character when he debuted in the WWF?

Answer: The Red Rooster

This was perhaps the most damaging gimmick in history. The WWF took a good worker with eight years of experience and made a cock out of him, literally. He was known as the Red Rooster. His character was treated as that of a dopey rookie. He had a red spiked streak in his hair and he crowed, 'cock a doodle doo!' The final aspect of his character was that when he was ready to pin his opponent, he got confused and asked his manager, Bobby Heenan, for help.

While asking Heenan for help, his opponent would roll him up and beat him. Terry tried his best to shake this terrible experience by returning to NWA (WCW), but the damage was done. Few could forget about the awful WWF stint. Contrary to a widely believed rumor, Taylor was never considered for the Mr. Perfect character.

The rumor comes from an online interview of Taylor in which the phrase, "I could have been Mr. Perfect" was taken out of context. Taylor was just saying that he and Hennig entered WWF at the same time and was basically saying, "what if?"
3. In 1990, Sergeant Slaughter returned to the WWF. What was the aspect of his character?

Answer: he was an Iraqi sympathizer

During the Gulf War of the early 1990s, the WWF decided to cash in on the conflict by altering the character of Sergeant Slaughter. Sarge now portayed an Iraqi sypathizer. By this point, the former G.I. Joe character was already a little past his prime, yet he was given the WWF Championship. Of course this all led to Hulk Hogan going in to full 'American Hero' mode and defeating him at 'Wrestlemania VII.' There was a Garth Brooks tune that came out around the same time as this angle that I feel greatly describes the WWF for doing this angle: 'Shameless.'
4. Which character made his WWF debut by interrupting the 1993 'Royal Rumble' and eliminating Undertaker?

Answer: Giant Gonzales

Jorge Gonzales is the tallest man to wrestle in a top U.S. wrestling company. He was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, but knee problems kept him from being able to play in the NBA. Ted Turner got use out of the big guy in another one of his outlets, World Championship Wrestling.

He was billed as El Gigante. He didn't have much skill; he actually looked kind of ackward. He usually just tossed around his opponent (or opponents) for awhile until it was time for him to use the claw hold to win. WCW tried hard to make him a star, but only had minor success.

When WWF signed Jorge, he would soon be treated as a total freak show. He wore a hairy suit with painted on muscles. I guess this was to make up for him not having large muscles; he had a 'tall and lanky' appearance.

The suit was just too hideous for fans to take the man seriously. Many believe Jorge's heart was never really in wrestling. This is understandable, considering he was treated as a freak show.
5. What did Roddy Piper do while feuding with Bad News Brown?

Answer: Paint half of his body black

Roddy Piper painted half of his body black. Also, before his big match with Bad News, he danced like the pointer sisters.
6. Kevin Nash's singles debut in WCW took place during the 1991 'Super Brawl' Pay-Per-View. What was the name of his character?

Answer: Oz

Kevin Nash portrayed Oz, managed by the Wizard (Kevin Sullivan). The character began with a reenactment of a scene in 'The Wizard of Oz', in which the travellers go before the Wizard. The Wizard wore a terrible looking mask. Nash also had to wear an incredibly goofy mask as he walked down the isle. Thankfully, as the character got older he stopped wearing the mask altogether and stopped doing some of the sketches.

His 'Super Brawl' debut was absolutely horrible. Interestingly enough, Scott Hall also made his debut in WCW at this show as Diamond Studd.
7. The Road Warriors, who were more often referred to as L.O.D. in the WWF, had a ventriloquist's dummy in their corner at one point. What was the puppet's name?

Answer: Rocco

The Road Warriors were probably the most dominating and ground breaking tag team of the 1980s, ruling Georgia Championship Wrestling and then going on to become the top team in AWA and NWA. However, Hawk and Animal's career in the WWF was not as wonderful. One theory was that Vince wanted to bury the team because they became huge without ever wrestling in the WWF.

They started out hot, winning the tag team titles. Eventually, Paul Ellering and Rocco were brought in. This was terrible. Hawk would soon leave the WWF (to work primarily in Japan). Animal soon followed.

In the late 1990s, the L.O.D. returned to the Federation, only to look like bigger goofs in a tag team division comprising of such forgettable teams as the Godwinns, the Bodydonnas, and the Headbangers.

By the time the New Age Outlaws formed, the L.O.D. were treated as 'dinosaurs.' The Outlaws even refered to them as 'O.L.D.' Hawk at one point had to do an angle where he had lots of personal problems, having to act drunk a few times and even attempting suicide. To add insult to injury, the WWF parodied the team a few months after they exited the WWF. Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco came out on 'WWF Raw' to the Road Warrior's theme song wearing spiked shoulder pads and wearing Road Warrior designed face paint.
8. What was the name of the character that debuted on a "A Flair for the Gold" segment to side with Sting and Davey Boy Smith?

Answer: The Shockmaster

In 1993, Fred Ottman, who was Typhoon and Tugboat in the WWF, was set to debut in WCW to side with the company's top two babyfaces. He definitely dove right in to WCW...head first. It was certainly an embarrassing moment for him and a funny one for fans.

He become the Shockmaster, who wore a sparkly Stormtrooper-like helmet. He was supposed to be the surprise partner for 'War Games '93.' Sting and Davey Boy appeared on the show to introduce him. The big man was supposed to burst through the wall to make his big splash in to WCW.

A 'natural disaster' erupted. The former Tugboat tripped as he broke through the wall. He fell to the ground and his helmet came off, ruining any mystery of who the man was. You had to feel sorry for the big guy as he crawled to retrieve the helmet. Fred Ottman would go through a couple of character changes before he was let go. Poor guy.
9. What 1980's movie character appeared in WCW to help Sting in a feud with the Four Horsemen?

Answer: Robocop

This was pathetic. Sting and the Horsemen were having a pretty hot feud going. What do the brains at WCW do? They bring in Robocop. You knew when you saw it that this was a low point in WCW's history. Imagine if McMahon brought in a movie character to feud with a wrestler...wait...he actually did, but that's a different question.
10. What movie character appeared in the WWF to feud with Hulk Hogan?

Answer: Zeus

Vince brought in Tommy 'Tiny' Lister, Jr. He played Zeus in 'No Holds Barred.' This was a wrestling movie that totally flopped. The movie saw Hogan defeat Zeus in the end. Well, Zeus began making surprise attacks on Hogan because he was mad that Hulk beat him in the movie. You see, he didn't play Lister the actor mad that Hogan the actor won in the end, claiming he could beat Hogan in real life.

He played Zeus (the movie character) and he wanted revenge on Hogan. WWF tried really hard to make Zeus appear credible, but nothing really worked. Zeus ended up wrestling Hogan in two tag matches.

The matches saw Randy Savage with Zeus and Brutus Beefcake with Hogan. The first match appeared at 'Summer Slam 89' and the other was a special PPV showing the movie and then a rematch from the earlier tag match, only now they fought in a steel cage.

Many feel this ordeal was like a pause in WWF history, which didn't unpause until Zeus left and everything went back to normal. Apparently, Vince had big plans for Zeus. Rumor has it that the original idea was for Hogan and Zeus to finally have a singles match at 'Wrestlemania VI.' Instead we got the classic Warrior/Hogan match.
11. Which of the following was never a member of the Dungeon of Doom?

Answer: Krazi Glew

The Dungeon of Doom angle was the worst leading storyline ever. Their sole purpose was to crush Hulkamania. The stable saw a growing array of terrible characters. It seemed like every month another goofy character would come in and often would go away quickly.

Besides those mentioned in the choices, the stable consisted of such terrible gimmicks as the Shark, the Zodiak, the Ultimate Solution, and the Master. These characters made me long for the days of the New Breed, Laser Tron, and the Ding Dongs.
12. In 1995, Mabel and Yokozuna 'smashed' a WWF superstars face, causing him to wear a mask for a few months. Which superstar had to wear this mask?

Answer: Undertaker

Undertaker had to wear a mask that looked like it came from 'Phantom of the Opera.' He was becoming a joke about this time. That mask made him hard to take seriously.
13. When Sunny left the Bodydonnas, who did they bring in as a new manager?

Answer: Kloudi

They brought in Jimmy Shoulders, an indy wrestler and apparently a close friend of Candito. You could sense that the team wasn't exactly comfortable with this and it didn't take long for Kloudi to be taken off television. The WWF didn't seem to know what it wanted to do with Kloudi.
14. Which two stars did Jim Ross say he would bring back to the WWF in the mid 1990s?

Answer: Razor Ramon and Diesel

After Kevin Nash and Scott Hall left the WWF for WCW, the WWF kept their trademark names of Razor Ramon and Diesel by giving them to Rick Bogner and Glen Jacobs. This was supposed to be some kind of payback by Jim Ross because of his firing around the time he developed Bell's palsy.

The fans didn't like this angle at all. The imposters have had success prior to this angle. The second Diesel would become Kane. The new Razor would go on to have some success for New Japan Pro Wrestling as Big Rick Titan, once a member of 'nWo Japan.'
15. Ric Flair did which of the following on WCW television in the late 1990s?

Answer: had what seemed to be a heart attack

WCW tried out an angle where Ric Flair was in the ring talking and then all of the sudden he grabbed his arm and started to fall. He looked as if he were having a heart attack. The acting was quite convincing. Immediately following the incident, many fans and insiders alike developed genuine concerns about whether or not this was a wrestling angle.

When it was revealed it was just an angle, everyone was happy Flair was okay, but most felt this was not an appropriate angle. WCW wasn't through having fun at Flair's expense.

He ended up having to go to mental institution filled with lots of terrible actors (except for Tony Brown). Oddly, Scott Hall showed up at the institution at some point. Hall is another major star WCW wasted at the time.
16. What WWF stable hoped to 'disfigure' Val Venis?

Answer: Kaientai

During the early days of Kaientai, before it was just a tag team, the group consisted of Sho Funaki, Dick Togo, Mens Teioh, and manager Yamaguchi-san. Val Venis, the WWF's own porn star, had eyes for Yamaguchi-san's sister. This infuriated the stable.

This led Taka Michinoku, the other Asian WWF star at the time, to join the group. The group had one goal: disfigure Val Venis. It looked as if the stable's manager would slice him with a sword while the wrestlers held on to Val. The lights went out and the fans were supposed to wonder what happened. Finally, it is revealed that John Wayne Bobbitt came to the rescue.
17. Which superstar teased the Big Show when WWF storyline told us that Show's father was dying of terminal cancer?

Answer: Big Boss Man

When Paul Wight made his debut in WCW, the announcers strongly implied that he was the son of the late Andre the Giant. This bothered a lot of fans. When Wight debuted in the WWF, it would not take long before the issue of Wight's father would come up again.

This time we hear Show's dad is dying. Bossman makes fun of the situation. At the funeral for Mr. Wight, Bossman shows up and flirts with the widow of Mr. Wight. He then tries to run off with the casket, which causes Show to run after him sobbing and screaming.

The final nail in the coffin (pardon the pun) came when Bossman came out on television and claimed that the man who died wasn't Show's dad and that Paul was a bastard child. Bossman even said that he himself was Paul's dad. How low will the WWF go? By the way, Show lost his father prior to ever gracing a WWF ring.
18. In the early 1990s, what masked character arrived in WCW to challenge Sting?

Answer: The Black Scorpion

This was really poorly done. Instead of feuding Sting and Ric Flair, WCW decided it would be better to create the Black Scorpion. Legend has it that Ole Anderson hoped to get the Ultimate Warrior to jump ship to WCW to do this angle. The Warrior kind of broke into the business with Sting. Ole had a hand in Sting and Warrior's early days as well.

The Black Scorpion ended up to be Ric Flair, although many speculate that he was not the original wrestler intended to be in the suit.
19. On an episode of 'WWF Shotgun', Sunny promised to show a 'sexy video' of herself. The video included Sunny with a doll that was supposed to look like a character from a children's show. What character was with her in the video?

Answer: Elmo

It occured during the heigth of popularity for the toy, 'Tickle Me Elmo.' The video was definitely not sexy and it wasn't funny.
20. The Big Boss Man once tricked Al Snow into eating something he normally would not have. What was served to Al?

Answer: Al's dog Pepper

The WWF seems to know how to make a bad Bossman angle worse. He supposely fed Al's dog to him.
21. During a WCW Pay-Per-View in the mid 1990s, which wrestler was thrown off a building by Hulk Hogan only to reappear the same night and wrestle Hogan in the main event?

Answer: The Giant

It was the Giant. This was very laughable. It occured at a time when WCW announcers wanted you to think Giant was the son of Andre. How could anyone take WCW seriously after this?
22. Who won the first WWF 'Miss Royal Rumble Bikini Contest'?

Answer: Mae Young

Mae Young won the event. What made this moment even worse was that she showed us (what she called) her 'puppies.' She wasn't actually nude (thank God). She was wearing a prosthetic suit. That didn't make it much better.
23. Before the 1998 'Halloween Havoc', WCW brought in a movie character who would get involved in an angle involving the Steiner Brothers. This character interrupted Rick Steiner to tell him he's on Scott's side. Who was the charecter?

Answer: Chucky

To hype 'Bride of Chucky', WCW aired a video of Chucky telling Rick that he would be on Scott's side. Rick even called him out. Needless to say, this only made the angle worse.
24. Which celebrity actually became a WCW World Champion?

Answer: David Arquette

During a time when WCW was pushing 'Ready to Rumble', David Arquette was actually allowed to win the company's most prestigious belt.
25. Which of the following did Mark Henry not have to do while portraying the 'Sexual Chocolate' character?

Answer: had to buy tampons for Jacqueline and Terri

Poor Mark Henry. The man has great camera presence, including a memorable smile. The Sexual Chocolate character started out as a pretty good one. Mark acted somewhat like Chef from South Park. The fans were interested in him, but Mark would eventually have to do several embarassing things.

In 2002, Henry made a return to the WWF. Thankfully, his strength became the center of his character, rather than sex.
