Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Only mammal that is able to truly fly.

Answer: Bat

Bats have poor eyesight, so they use something called echolocation to help them catch food. Some kinds of bats also feed on fruit. Contrary to many people's beliefs, vampire bats, and other kinds of bats, are NOT dangerous.
2. This kind of bird is often depicted as very wise.

Answer: Owl

Harry Potter has a snowy owl called Hedwig. Snowy owls are just one of the many different kinds of owls on Earth, including barn owls, great horned owls, and saw-whet owls. Owls can be found anywhere in the world except for Antarctica.
3. Little insect that has a glowing rear end; it can only be seen in summer.

Answer: Firefly

Different species of fireflies have different flash patterns. One kind of female mimics the flash pattern of another species to lure the males close to her, then eats them.
4. This mammal is known for raiding garbage cans and for wearing a "mask".

Answer: Raccoon

There is a myth that raccoons have good hygiene because they always wash their food before eating. This is incorrect. Raccoons put their food in water because it helps them to better taste it.
5. Don't disturb it! It might let loose a VERY stinky smell at you.

Answer: Skunk

If you ever encounter a skunk, back away from it slowly. The skunk will use other tactics to warn you first, and will only spray you as a last resort.
6. A very hairy arachnid; many people are scared of it.

Answer: Tarantula

One kind of tarantula, the goliath bird-eating tarantula, can grow as big as a dinner plate and, as its name suggests, sometimes eats small birds and frogs. They can detach their hairs if threatened, and it is very unpleasant if any of these get onto your skin or in your eyes.
7. Plays dead when threatened; only marsupial that lives in North America.

Answer: Virginia opossum

Possums also defecate and release a stinky liquid in addition to playing dead. They CANNOT hang themselves from a tree; they are too heavy, and even babies can only hang for a few seconds.
8. A small, furry feline, very popular kind of pet.

Answer: Domestic cat

Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world. Some cats are feral, which means that they live in the wild and are not used to human presence, and might attack.
9. Large, striped, endangered feline.

Answer: Tiger

All of the species of tigers are either endangered, such as the Siberian tiger, or extinct, such as the Bali tiger. Unlike most members of the cat family, tigers are not afraid of water and would gladly go for a dip.
10. Very loud; some species stay below the ground as a baby for a very long time.

Answer: Cicada

Some species stay underground for 17 years before they come out all at once and mate. They can be as loud as a rock concert!
