Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Member of the dog family; females are called vixens; mostly nocturnal.

Answer: Red fox

The red fox has a bushy tail, usually with a white tip. Although part of the dog family, they can be referred to as 'cat-like' canines because of their excellent balance when stalking prey.
2. Second largest living land animal; name means "river horse"; hairless except for some bristles on the muzzle.

Answer: Hippopotamus

George Washington had wooden teeth, right? Wrong. His teeth were actually carved from tusks of hippopotamuses. Hippos can be found in Africa.
3. Fastest land animal; blunt claws that can only be partially retracted; closely spaced black spots cover most of the body.

Answer: Cheetah

Cheetahs have been reported to run at speeds of 70 miles per hour or more! A cheetah can go from 0-45 mph in two seconds.
4. Small North American ground squirrel; yellowish, brown coat; live together in "towns".

Answer: Prairie dog

The prairie dog gets its name from its barking alarm call. Also, black-tailed prairie dogs are sold in some pet shops.
5. Bearlike animal; solitary except for breeding season; symbol of the World Wildlife Fund.

Answer: Giant Panda

Pére David discovered the panda in 1869. The Chinese call the giant panda the "Big Bear Cat".
6. Marsupial; moves slowly on four feet but can attain high speeds by jumping, or bounding, using only the hind legs; uses tail for balance.

Answer: Kangaroo

Baby kangaroos, called "joeys", live in their mothers pouch for about six months. Joeys continue feeding off their mother until 18 months of age.
7. Can be found all over the world except Antarctica; hibernate by burying themselves in mud; amphibian.

Answer: Frog

The croak of a male frog is used to attract a female during mating season. Also, frogs do not drink water to absorb it. Water is absorbed through the frog's skin instead.
8. Rodent; ratlike appearance; one type of this animal is said to 'fly'.

Answer: Squirrel

Urban squirrels have been known to become addicted to human sweets. British scientists recently discovered a group of squirrels addicted to nicotine after chewing on a discarded cigarette pack. "Flying" squirrels actually glide through the air rather than fly.
9. Usually active at night; excellent vision; often used as a symbol of intelligence.

Answer: Owl

Owls are commonly seen as a symbol of wisdom, although owls themselves are not necessarily very smart. Owls' necks are very flexible and can rotate a long way.
10. Member of the deer family; antlers covered in velvet; shed their antlers.

Answer: Moose

Moose shed their antlers in mid-winter and re-growth begins in the spring. Most often, the new-grown antlers are larger than they were before.
