Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known as a warm color, red is traditionally associated with which emergency vehicle?

Answer: fire truck

While fire trucks may be white, yellow, orange or other colors, red has been the color most associated with fire trucks -- so much so that there is a color, fire-engine red, named after the commonness of red fire trucks. There are many theories as to why so many fire trucks are red, but the one that makes the most sense to me is this one: From 1908-1927, common citizens had the availability to buy Model-T Fords.

The only color these cars came in was black. Red was used to paint fire trucks because it made them stand out among the other vehicles on the road.
2. Given the following choices, which one can be identified with the color black?

Answer: Darth Vader

Darth Vader is the main antagonist in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. James Earl Jones provided the voice of him, while David Prowse wore the all-black suit of armor that Darth Vader donned, which included a mask, helmet, and a cape.
3. Closely associated with the Arctic, what type of bear is white in color?

Answer: polar bear

The polar bear's scientific name is Ursus maritimus, which translates to "maritime bear." They inhabit the area surrounding the North Pole and Arctic Ocean. Polar bears' food of choice is seals. The male polar bear can weigh up to 1500 pounds. Climate change has been a problem for polar bears in the early 21st century, as they have experienced habitat loss due to the melting of the polar ice caps.
4. Traditionally white with red stripes, this confectionery treat is popular around Christmas.

Answer: candy cane

Candy canes are a sugary stick candy that originated in Germany. Traditionally, candy canes are white with red stripes, and are commonly peppermint flavored. Due to their association with Christmas, candy canes sales are the highest in December in the United States. December 26 is National Candy Cane Day in the USA.
5. Bumble bees have two distinctive colors; one is yellow. What color am I leaving out?

Answer: black

Bumblebees have a black and yellow fuzzy body. They are social insects that are efficient pollinators. Unlike honeybees, bumblebees are able to sting multiple times, but rarely will sting unless threatened as they are more docile than other bees and wasps.
6. Mainly in winter, when it gets cold enough, we see precipitation that falls out of the sky, known as snow. What color is snow?

Answer: white

In order for precipitation to turn into snow, the atmospheric temperature is at or below the freezing point, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit. For people closer to the equator, you may never see snow, but for people closer to the poles, like in Canada, for instance, snow is a common occurrence in the winter.
7. If you prick your finger hard enough, you may start leaking out a red bodily fluid. Which fluid am I talking about?

Answer: blood

Blood is a vital bodily fluid that is necessary to carry oxygen and nutrients to cells in the body and bodily organs. The heart pumps the blood throughout the body. Blood is made up of about 90 percent water, and the average adult has about five liters of blood in their body.
8. Several fruits are red, such as certain types of apples, strawberries, and raspberries. Which of the following fruits is also red?

Answer: cherry

Cherries can be eaten raw or can be used in different foods, such as my favorite dessert, cherry pie. Cherries are nutritious as they are good sources of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Plus, they are low in calories, so go ahead and treat yourself to a tasty and healthy snack.
9. Can you spot the bird that is mostly black out of the following choices?

Answer: crow

I didn't include the obvious blackbird as that would have been a dead give away. Crows are a part of the crow family, scientifically known as corvids. This group also includes ravens and rooks. They are known as some of the most intelligent birds, as they are able to problem solve and use tools.
10. Finally, how about a joke you might have heard: what is black, white and read all over?

Answer: newspaper

You probably saw that joke coming... anyway, newspapers were once the primary news source for most people, but with technological advances, they have faced a steady decline, particularly in the 21st century with the popularity of the internet which allows people to find news online.

A typical local newspaper featured a front page, which had whatever that day's most newsworthy story was, along with other pages for sports, politics, business, comic strips, obituaries, horoscopes, and crossword puzzles among others.
