Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Dirty Magic", what is the place where Joe and Katherine enter called?

Answer: No man's land

No man's land, as commonly known from war zones, is the exact place that Katherine and Joe enter this new world from Earth. It's the place between the war of the Alysians and Meridians! Katherine and Joe had to crawl to the Alysians' side as the Meridians would fire at all the charges.
2. What was Spider's real name and rank in the land, before Cornell's supposed death?

Answer: Araik Ben; Head of the Heathermen

Yes, he was Araik Ben, head of the Heathermen, who was a very talented inventor. He was so smart that Orlemann was actually his apprentice. Araik Ben hid his identity until Cornell told Joe that his braille notebook had his name on it in code.
3. Was Hannah the real charge who was desperately fighting for her life?

Answer: No

At the end, Joe discovered he was the one who was dying back in the real world from a bullet wound (which he even had in this world) on his hand. He was searching for Hannah throughout the whole book because he thought it was his fault that Hannah was dying but at the end it wasn't even her who was in trouble.
4. Which of the following were maps that were actually in Spider's notebook?

Answer: Map of the Long City

Spider had numerous maps in his notebook including the map of the Long City and Camp Quarain. His maps were of braille poked by Tom Healy (Katherine's brother) and had different shapes. Even butterflies!
5. What does a Zamrami automaton do?

Answer: Blinds the viewer with its light

A zamrani automaton was one of the simplest, to my opinion, machines that were made by Orlemann, because of its only ability - to blind its victim. In Joe's and Orlemann's opinion (and mine), the Goliath is his best automaton as it can shoot cannons. The only problem is, people can easily escape from it by standing still. Scrapers reach to high places and are also helpful for fortified attacks like the attack of the Amadragon.
6. What does Orlemann propose he has in common with Joe?

Answer: His love for machine models

Only children came from Earth to this world, and Joe was not evil. Orlemann never said he looked like him, he only said he was like him in characteristics. So their common love was the love for machine models, as they both collected models and tried to keep them safe (Orlemann in his showcase and Joe on his top shelf).
7. What are the ranks of people, in order, in regards to escorting charges to places?

Answer: Fetcher, Apprentice, Guide

First it's the fetcher, who Katherine is before Spider takes her as his apprentice, and Spider himself is a guide. Fetchers fetch charges from Earth. Apprentices just learn and follow guides and guides escort charges to the arches that transport them to death or life.
8. How could someone actually know the road along the Long Lake and mountains exists, as it was invisible?

Answer: By sunlight shades reflecting off it

Yes, it could be by believing it was there, but you would not find the bridge, you would have to see the light transition. If people could travel through the lake they would end up in complete poison acid, which rusts a whole metal ship in minutes (as said by Spider).
9. What was the name of the fortune teller Spider went to see in Camp Quarain?

Answer: Cloves

It was Cloves the seer; Spider went to him to know how many charges were waiting to get passes for the mercy mission by Orlemann. Wyn worked for Cloves before he got too greedy and went to work with Orlemann, who paid him even less respect. Poor Wyn, he was banished at the end with Orlemann, out of the land.
10. What were the three sisters' names who ruled the world between death and life?

Answer: Alysia, Merid and Cornell

Alysia, Merid and Cornell were separated by Orlemann's lies about Cornell being dead and the other sister killing them, but were brought back together during the treaty for Armistice and Abdication.
