Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On their first shot on each hole, players are allowed to put their ball on a small wooden or plastic object that raises the ball off the ground. What is this item called?

Answer: Tee

By raising the ball off the ground, the tee provides the player with an increased chance of getting a clean strike on the ball, which is vital for that all-important first shot on each hole!
2. Speaking of the first shot on each hole, what is that shot generally referred to as?

Answer: Drive

Unless the hole in question is a short one (thereby requiring the use of a club that will send the ball a shorter distance), a player will generally use one of his or her bigger clubs off the tee to send the ball as far as possible. This shot is generally known as the drive.
3. What is the close-cut grass area that runs from the start of the hole to the green known as?

Answer: Fairway

Until (s)he gets onto the green, a player always wants to keep his or her ball on the fairway, as this is generally the most favourable surface from which to play subsequent shots. Either side of the fairway is likely to be various hazards, such as longer grass (known as the rough), trees, and possibly water - all of which can cause the player problems with his or her subsequent shot.
4. Finally the ball is safely on the green! Which club would a player normally get out of his or her bag to try to hit the ball into the hole?

Answer: Putter

Sometimes known as the putting green, the green is a very close-cut grass area that houses the hole (which often has a flag inserted to make it easier to see exactly where the hole is) into which the player ultimately needs to deposit his or her ball to complete that particular hole. The putter is a specialised club designed for exactly that purpose.
5. One should always try to get the ball into the hole in the fewest shots possible. Which of the following is NOT a term used to describe one's performance on any particular hole?

Answer: Booger

Par is the number of strokes a player should require to complete the hole. Birdie means the player completed the hole in one shot under par (i.e. took one fewer shot than (s)he should have). Eagle means the player completed the hole in two shots under par (i.e. took two fewer shots than (s)he should have).

There is no such term as "booger" used in golf, however the term "bogey" is used in golf, and this means the player completed the hole in one shot over par (i.e. took one more shot than (s)he should have).
6. Widely accepted as the birthplace of golf, which country of the United Kingdom boasts wonderful courses such as St. Andrews, Muirfield, and Carnoustie?

Answer: Scotland

Scotland has well over five hundred golf courses, including the iconic St. Andrews, Muirfield, and Carnoustie, all of which have hosted the Open Championship on more than one occasion.
7. The Masters is always held at the same course - Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA - each year. As well as a nice amount of prize money, what other item does the winner of The Masters also receive?

Answer: A green jacket

The tradition of presenting the winner of The Masters with a green jacket began in 1949, and has continued every year since. The winner also becomes an honorary member of the very prestigious Augusta National Golf Club.
8. Three of these men have won The Masters more than once; however one has not, as he is a footballer. Can you identify the infiltrator?

Answer: Lionel Messi

American Jack Nicklaus won The Masters six times between 1963 and 1986, Spaniard Seve Ballesteros won the tournament in 1980 and 1983, and Englishman Nick Faldo won it in 1989, 1990, and 1996. Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi has, unsurprisingly, never won The Masters!
9. Most professional golfers employ a person to carry their bag and advise them on what club to use for their next shot. What is this person called?

Answer: Caddie

A golf caddie is a bit like a co-driver of a rally car, as a good one will be fully aware of the course, its layout, and the various hazards a player might encounter when playing his or her round. It is the caddie's job not only to carry the player's bag, but to provide support and advice towards helping the player perform to the best of his or her ability.
10. Brother and sister Andrew and Jane are playing a round of golf. Andrew scored three on the previous hole, and Jane scored four. According to golf etiquette, who should have the first shot on the next hole?

Answer: Andrew, as he got the best score on the previous hole

Known as the "honor", it is always the player who achieved the best score on the previous hole that should have the first shot on the next hole. If the players scored the same on the previous hole, the "honor" remains with the player who had the honor on the hole immediately prior to that.
