Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone"), we first meet the Sorting Hat: a magical hat that decides which house to put students in each year, depending on their personality. But before that, it sings a song. Which of these hat's descriptions/song lyrics is NOT correctly matched up to the house it was describing?

Answer: "...hard workers were most worthy of admission" - Slytherin

The correct quotes are from the Sorting Hat's first song in "The Philosopher's Stone" - there, it says of Slytherin:

"You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends."

The other quote (the one incorrectly matched to Slytherin) was from the next song we hear the Sorting Hat sing, in the Goblet of Fire - it says "For Hufflepuff, hard workers were most worthy of admission..."

The hat originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor and lives in the headmaster's office. It has (presumably) sorted every student that has ever gone to Hogwarts.

Interestingly, it debated putting Harry Potter in Slytherin and Hermione in Ravenclaw, before putting both in Gryffindor.
2. In "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone"), two creatures and several puzzles/obstacles protected the stone. What were the two animals?

Answer: A three-headed dog and a troll

The way to get past the three-headed dog ("Fluffy") was to play music, causing it to fall asleep - Harry, Hermione and Ron got past Fluffy by playing a flute. By the time Harry and Hermione arrived at the chamber with the troll, it had already been knocked out by Quirrell.
3. Hatching a chicken egg beneath a toad creates a creature that was hidden underneath the dungeons in Hogwarts. Which creature, appearing in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", was this?

Answer: A basilisk

If you look directly in a basilisk's eyes, you die. Looking at their eyes indirectly (in a mirror, through a transparent object, through a camera lens etc.) causes petrification - victims are paralysed. In "The Chamber of Secrets", several beings were petrified, including Hermione Granger, Colin Creevey, Nearly-Headless Nick (a ghost) and Mrs. Norris (a cat).
4. Professor Lupin, Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", transformed into a werewolf every month unless he took a potion. What was the name of the potion?

Answer: Wolfsbane Potion

Every full moon, Professor Lupin became a werewolf. If he took the Wolfsbane Potion (which Professor Snape kindly brewed for him), it made it his state a lot less painful and easier to control - he kept his human mind and did not have the urge to bite humans. It was invented in the 1970s and its main ingredient is aconite. Sugar renders it useless, although it is not known why.

Veritaserum is a potion that forces the drinker to tell the truth and the Draught of Living Death causes the drinker to fall asleep.
5. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", we first see the Marauder's Map: Harry is given it. The map shows Hogwarts with people's locations marked on it - the owner can see where any person within the grounds of Hogwarts is. Who gives this magical map to Harry?

Answer: Fred/George Weasley

The map was created by James Potter ("Prongs"), Peter Pettigrew ("Wormtail"), Sirius Black ("Padfoot") and Remus Lupin ("Moony") at the time they were at school. At some point, the caretaker (Argus Filch) confiscated it and it was found in a drawer by Fred and George Weasley.

In "the Prisoner of Azkaban", the twins reveal its presence to Harry and give him the map, saying he needed it more than them - by then, they have memorised the positions of the secret tunnels exiting Hogwarts and they think Harry can use it to sneak out go to Hogsmeade at weekends (he didn't have a signed permission slip, so wasn't allowed).
6. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", to get to the Quidditch World Cup, Harry grabbed onto a boot which teleported him there. What is the term for inanimate objects which transport the people who touch them to a specific location?

Answer: Portkey

There are two types of portkeys: those that automatically transport anyone holding it to a specific location at a predetermined time and those that transport the first person that holds it (or first people, if they hold onto it simultaneously).

An example of the first type was the one used to get to the Quidditch World Cup - it transported anyone holding it at 5:07 on 22nd August (1994) from Stoatshead Hill to the campsite.

Later in the book, we see an example of the second type: the Triwizard Cup is turned into a portkey and transports Harry and Cedric to a graveyard when they touch it.
7. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", the Goblet of Fire is a magical object used to choose the three champions to participate in the Triwizard Tournament. However, Barty Crouch Junior cast a spell on it to trick it into picking four students instead. Which spell did he use?

Answer: Confundus Charm

Barty Crouch Jr, posing as Mad-Eye Moody, said, "It would have needed an exceptionally strong Confundus Charm to bamboozle that Goblet..."

Barty Crouch Jr was serving Lord Voldemort - he manipulated the Goblet of Fire to ensure Harry Potter was a participant in the Triwizard Tournament, as part of Voldemort's plan.
8. The fifth Harry Potter book has the name of a magical creature in its title: a phoenix ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"). One character in particular is very attached to phoenixes - his patronus is a phoenix and he has a pet phoenix named Fawkes. Who is this character?

Answer: Albus Dumbledore

Fawkes is quite important in several of the books: his tears (an antidote for basilisk venom) save Harry's life in "The Chamber of Secrets"; The Order of the Phoenix was named after him; he is a form of communication for the Order/Dumbledore and two feathers were taken from him and used in the creation of the wands of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.
9. In "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", Aragog dies. Aragog was an acromantula raised by Hagrid and later released into the Forbidden Forest. Which non-magical creatures do acromantulas most resemble?

Answer: Spiders

Acromantulas are giant spiders. In "The Chamber of Secrets", Harry and Ron almost get eaten by Aragog and the rest of the colony. While Hagrid, who thought of Aragog as a pet, grieved his death, Harry and Ron weren't as upset.
10. The seventh book ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") is based around two sets of magical objects: Horcruxes and Hallows. Which of these items is not correctly matched to the set it belongs to?

Answer: Tom Riddle's diary - Hallows

The three Hallows are the invisibility cloak, the resurrection stone and the elder wand. There are seven Horcruxes (five objects and two animals): Tom Riddle's diary, Nagini (Voldemort's snake), Marvolo Gaunt's ring, Slytherin's locket, Hufflepuff's cup, Ravenclaw's Diadem and Harry Potter.
