Malory Towers: Book One Trivia Quiz

Answer: Darrell Rivers

The main character is Darrell Rivers. Darrell is an 11 year old girl who is starting boarding school for the first time. We meet her in the first chapter as she gets ready to head to her new school.

Sally and Gwendoline also are starting at Malory Towers this term, whereas Alicia has been at Malory Towers for a term. The name Darrell Rivers was inspired by Enid Blyton's second husband, Kenneth Darrell Waters!

As a first form girl they were only allowed 5 pounds. Seems like a very little amount of money now. However, in current day money this is now worth around 180 pounds.

Answer: Cornwall

Malory Towers is in Cornwall, which is located in the far west of Great Britain. Apparently Malory Towers is based on Benenden School which is where Enid Blyton's daughters attended school. Princess Anne also attended Benenden School!

Answer: Katherine

Katherine is the head girl of the first form. She is shown to be a very responsible member of the form, with the girls all respecting her greatly. In this book this is the only time where Katherine is in the same form as Darrell and the others. When they are in the second form, we hear that Katherine has already moved up to the third form.

Answer: Roger

Roger pretended to be deaf to his teacher Old Toggles. Alicia has three brothers, Sam, Dick and Roger. Darrell is very jealous of Alicia's three brothers, as she only has one younger sister. On the train to Malory Towers Alicia keeps them entertained by discussing her brothers, such as Sam who experiences travel sickness.

Answer: Gwendoline

Gwendoline got jealous of the attention Mary-Lou was getting, and felt so spiteful that she ducked Mary-Lou underwater. Darrell shook Gwendoline after Gwendoline ducked Mary-Lou underwater in the pool, as Mary-Lou cannot swim very well. This is the first time we see Darrell's famous hot temper.

At first the form is very shocked and sore with Darrell, however she immediately feels very ashamed and apologises. Unfortunately Gwendoline doesn't accept the apology very graciously.

Answer: Jean

Due to Alicia's ears being blocked by swimming underwater she was made to swap places with Jean, who was sitting at the front of the classroom! Jean was very happy to swap, however Alicia was not. This is a very good example of the fable, the boy who cried wolf.

Answer: Music room

She pushed Sally in a little music room at the end of half term. Sally kept denying she had a little sister while banging the keys on the piano, causing Darrell to lose her temper. After this Sally became very ill, causing Darrell to become very scared that she had seriously hurt Sally. Thankfully it is found out that Darrell's push did not hurt Sally and instead she had appendicitis. Darrell's father ends up operating on Sally and making her better, much to Darrell's relief.

Answer: Daphne

Her little sister is called Daphne! At first Sally is extremely jealous of her baby sister, due to being an only child for around 11 years. Sally believed she was sent away to boarding school to make room for the new baby and as her parents didn't want her any more.

However, it is found out that Sally's mother and baby sister were extremely sick after the birth, leading to Sally's enrolment to boarding school. Once Sally realises that, everything falls into place and she ends up loving her baby sister.

In the last two books by Pamela Cox we actually see Daphne attend Malory Towers.

Answer: Mary-Lou

Initially everyone believed that Darrell smashed Mary-Lou's fountain pen due to finding ink on her shoes. Everyone in the form believes it is Darrell except for Sally and Mary-Lou. During the night, Mary-Lou was very brave and managed to find Gwendoline's inky shoes inside an old gym cupboard to prove that Darrell was innocent.
