Question 4 of 10

Question 6 of 10
6. You are riding a roller coaster that is 3,450 feet long. Your dad can't take the twists and turns and passes out at the sign that you notice says that the ride is half over. He comes to as the ride stops at the end. How many feet of the ride did your dad miss out on as he was passed out? Hint

Question 7 of 10

Question 8 of 10
8. Your mom leaves you, your dad and sister at a picnic table to go and make a call to the babysitter. Another family with two parents and three kids comes to sit with you because all of the other tables are full. How many people are now sitting at the crowded table? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Your dad gives you $10 for supper. You love corn dogs, and decide that you want to eat as many of those as you can with that money. You find out that each one costs $4.25. How many can you buy with the money that you have? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. At the end of the day, your dad tells you it is thirty-eight miles home, but that you have to take a detour to pick up the baby. He says that detour will add four miles to the trip. Your mom checks her phone and finds a shortcut that she says will shorten the total trip by eight miles altogether (including the detour to pick up the baby). How many miles in total will your dad have to drive to get home from the carnival? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tickets for the rides are being sold for 100 for five dollars. How much does each ticket cost? (Keep in mind that there are 100 cents in each dollar.)

Answer: Five cents

If you divide $5.00 (500 cents) by 100 tickets, you find that each one only costs five cents. That's a good deal for all of the rides at the carnival!
2. If there are 36 horses on a merry-go-round and exactly half are being ridden when you step up to the ride, how many riders are there at that point before you get on?

Answer: 18

There is plenty of room for you! If you divide 36 by 2, or multiply it by 0.5, you will get half of the total. This value is equal to 18.

36/2 = 18, or 36 x 0.5 =18
3. It's getting close to lunchtime. There are still 12 rides that you would like to go on. Your mom tells you that you only have time for one quarter of them before you have to go eat. How many rides do you get to choose before lunch?

Answer: 3

Three more rides is all you have time for now. If you divide 12 by 4, or multiply 12 by 1/4, you will figure that out:

12/4 = 3
12 x 1/4 = 3
4. While you are eating your nachos at lunch, a small car pulls up and eight clowns get out. Fifty percent of them are each carrying one small furry dog. That's a lot of clowns and pets in that carnival car! How many dogs were there altogether?

Answer: Four

Fifty percent is exactly half. In this case, there are eight clowns, with fifty percent, or half of them carrying dogs. Exactly half of eight is four.

8/2 = 4, or 8 x 0.5 = 4
5. You watch your sister ride the teacups for two minutes and thirty seconds, the magic swan for four minutes, and the dreamboat for six whole minutes. If you consider only the time on the rides, how long did your sister spend taking them?

Answer: Twelve and a half minutes

This is an addition question. Total time for the rides is 12 minutes and 30 seconds. Each minute is made up of sixty seconds, and half of sixty is 30, so altogether, you will have to wait for twelve and a half minutes before you can go back to riding your own rides.

2 minutes, 30 seconds = 2.5 minutes
2.5 minutes + 4 minutes + 6 minutes = 12.5 minutes
6. You are riding a roller coaster that is 3,450 feet long. Your dad can't take the twists and turns and passes out at the sign that you notice says that the ride is half over. He comes to as the ride stops at the end. How many feet of the ride did your dad miss out on as he was passed out?

Answer: 1,725 feet

This one is a division question. If your dad passed out at the halfway mark, you need to divide the total length of the ride by 2 to come up with 1,725 feet. Maybe your dad should stick to the merry-go-round next time.

3,450/2 = 1,725
7. Your dad needs some refreshment after the roller coaster ride, so you head to the lemonade stand. He orders a large one (16 ounces) and you get a small one (9 ounces). How much more liquid will your dad have to drink than you to get to the end of his drink?

Answer: Seven ounces

To figure out the difference between the sizes of the drinks, you need to subtract the size of the small drink from the size of the large drink. This leaves a seven ounce difference.

16 - 9 = 7
8. Your mom leaves you, your dad and sister at a picnic table to go and make a call to the babysitter. Another family with two parents and three kids comes to sit with you because all of the other tables are full. How many people are now sitting at the crowded table?

Answer: Eight

With your mom gone to make her call, that leaves three from your family at the table. When you add that to the five members of the other family, there are a total of eight people at the table now.

3 + 5 = 8
9. Your dad gives you $10 for supper. You love corn dogs, and decide that you want to eat as many of those as you can with that money. You find out that each one costs $4.25. How many can you buy with the money that you have?

Answer: Two

This one takes a bit of figuring. If you just add how much the total will be as you add more corn dogs, you can figure it out. One will cost $4.25, so you can definitely have one. Yum! If you buy two, multiply the cost of one times two and you will pay $8.50. That's even better! They are so tasty! But, if you think that three would be better, you are out of luck because when you multiply the cost times three, you get $12.75, more than the $10 that you have. Oh well, if you get two, you will have some change to buy a candy apple on the way out of the carnival for the trip home.

4.25 x 2 = 8.50

Answer: Thirty-four

To figure out the total miles, you need to add and subtract for this one. Dad's route is 38 plus four miles long for a total of 42 miles. But, when you subtract mom's shortcut savings of eight miles, that ends up to be a total of 34 miles for the trip home. It's a good thing your mom found the shortcut. It has been a long day of math at the carnival!

38 + 4 - 8 = 34
