Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross"...Banbury is a REAL town, but in which country?

Answer: England

Banbury is a real town in England. It is approximately an hour's drive from Birmingham and two hours' drive from London.
2. Which of the following is the correct second line of the nursery rhyme?

Answer: To see a Fyne lady ride on a white horse

People sometimes think the word "Fyne" is the old spelling of "Fine", but it is actually thought the "Fyne" lady was a member of the Fiennes family, ancestors of Lord Saye and Sele who own nearby Broughton Castle, England.
3. If I go to Banbury today, I will see Banbury Cross as described in the Nursery Rhyme.

Answer: False

False unfortunately. The "White Cross" as it was known was destroyed at the end of 1600. Banbury does have a Cross, that was built in 1859 to commemorate the marriage of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, but it looks nothing like the "White Cross".
4. In which year was "Ride a Cock Horse" first seen in print?

Answer: 1784

Although it first appeared in print in 1784 it was known in its current form in at least 1760.
5. And finally...Banbury is also famous for a certain type of food. Which type?

Answer: Banbury cakes

"Banbury cakes" are flat pastries containing spicy currant filling. They have been made from secret recipes since at least 1586, possibly earlier.
