Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Miss Annersley and Miss Dene receive a letter from Con McKenzie, nee Stewart, a former history teacher who now lives in Australia. She lives next door to the Hopes, a rich family whose daughter Emerence is out of control. What does Emerence Hope do to make her parents decide to send her to boarding school?

Answer: She sets the summerhouse on fire.

Miss Annersley and Miss Dene are bemused by a telegram from Emerence Hope's father, which is very long - indicating that the family are rich - and contains the line 'please correct faults'. Con Mackenzie's letter explains further; the Hopes have brought Emerence up without boundaries, and believe you shouldn't say 'no' to children. One time, Emerence walked into the Mackenzies' house uninvited and had to be taken home.

The turning point comes when she sets fire to the summerhouse in the garden and causes a large amount of damage.

As the Hopes have heard a lot about the Chalet School from Con, they decide to send Emerence there. The staff are reluctant to take her, but agree to do so after a discussion with Jack Maynard.
2. When Bride Bettany meets her best friend Elfie Woodward at the station, Elfie breaks the sad news that she won't be going back to school. Why is this?

Answer: Her stepmother has died and her father is suffering from depression.

Elfie takes Bride aside at the station and tells her that Marmee, as she calls her stepmother, has died. She was seriously ill and although doctors did operate, it was too late and she died the day after the surgery. Elfie's dad is unable to cope, and is showing signs of depression.

The family have a housekeeper, but she is getting old, and Elfie has younger brothers who need looking after and her father can't do it. Because of this, she has to drop out of school and go home to help look after her family. Bride is devastated, and Miss Dene has to give her a pep talk and tell her to keep Elfie updated with school news to take her mind off things.

When Miss Annersley announces the prefects, she decides to have a games committee as well as a games prefect, which would have been Elfie's job otherwise.
3. After getting off to a bad start with the prefects, Emerence appears to be settling in, until she goes down the wrong stairs, and refuses to use the right ones when told to by Miss Dene. What does Miss Dene do in response?

Answer: She sits with Emerence until Emerence goes up the right stairs.

Emerence walks into a prefects' meeting and has to be kicked out by Tom and Bride, and Matron has to carry her away when she yells and bangs on the door. She also annoys the other girls by being rude to Miss Annersley. She settles down for a bit, but then gets into trouble with Miss Dene when she walks down the front stairs, and not the back ones which the younger girls are supposed to use. Miss Dene repeatedly tells her to go up the right stairs and come down, but Emerence digs her heels in, and Miss Dene responds by fetching a chair, a book and a typewriter and sitting by the stairs while Emerence stands there. Matron makes Emerence drink a glass of milk, and Emerence eventually caves in. Miss Annersley later explains to her the rationale behind the stairs rule.
4. Peggy Burnett has returned to the Chalet School as a games teacher, and is taking a gardening lesson with the Lower Fourth. What happens to her when she tries to free Mary-Lou Trelawney from some thorns?

Answer: She falls down an old well.

Mary-Lou has sneaked some clandestine scissors into school as the roses are getting overgrown in the Lower Fourth garden, and she wants to give them a good pruning. She gets caught on a long spray and panics because she doesn't want Miss Burnett finding out about the scissors. Miss Burnett goes to rescue her, but falls down a hole, to the shock of the girls. Miss Everett and Griffiths, the school gardener, help her out of the hole, as she has twisted her ankle.

The hole turns out to be an old well which has been filled in, but the combination of the rain loosening the soil and Miss Burnett jumping into it has opened it up, and also allowed a small stream to flow. Meanwhile, Miss Annersley confiscates the forbidden scissors.
5. The prefects go for a walk, and decide to have a race to the shrubbery, but find out the hard way that a sunken path has turned into a sea of mud. Which girl gets completely stuck and has to be pulled out by the others?

Answer: Julie Lucy

The weather has not been great, and as a result the school pitches are wet and the girls worry about matches being called off. On the way back, they pass through an area known as the Hollow, which is thought to be man-made (and this turns out to be true). Bride challenges the others to a race, and several of the girls try to jump the sunken path.

Unfortunately, because of the stream coming out of the well, the path has become muddy and Julie, who has landed smack bang in the middle of the path, gets stuck. Tom gets a tug-o'-war rope and uses it to lassoo Julie, and the others pull her out while Bride holds her hand.

They all return to the school, with Julie covered in mud, and Miss Annersley lets them miss prep as they are all worn out.
6. What is the name of Commander Christy's ancestor, a notorious pirate who was thought to have caused a pond to become stagnant and toxic by blocking a drain?

Answer: Dai Lloyd

After Miss Burnett inadvertently frees the well and the prefects get stuck in the mud, Miss Annersley, Griffiths and Commander Christy investigate the area. Griffiths believes the Hollow was once a pond, and Commander Christy confirms that one of his ancestors, Delicia Lloyd, had the pond drained after it became stagnant and emitted toxic vapours which killed both her daughters and an unfortunate maid.

He also discovers what used to be a bridge. He does some more research and tells the staff about another ancestor, a pirate called Dai Lloyd, and thinks that Lloyd used the drain as a hiding place for treasure and later had it filled in.

It was also possible that he used another outlet at Kittiwake Cove to collect the treasure before stashing it.
7. At the Staff Evening, both the prefects and staff dress up as book titles as part of a contest. Which book does Miss Stephens come as?

Answer: Oliver Twist

Or rather, 'All Over Twist' (say it out loud!) - she wears her jumper and skirt the wrong way round and has her hair twisted up. Bride comes as Noel Streatfeild's 'Ballet Shoes', with a costume covered in various dancing pumps. Miss Burnett is Dorothy Sayers' 'Whose Body?', with a dress with question marks on it, and Miss Slater comes in her tennis kit as Wilkie Collins' 'The Woman in White'. Miss Annersley and Miss Dene, two of the key members of the school, come in their normal clothes and are revealed to be 'The Pillars of the House' by Charlotte Yonge, which is pretty innovative. We never find out what Julie Lucy's shawl/turnip combo or Miss Derwent's scarlet curtain outfit represent, though.
8. Which of these is NOT one of the contests that the prefects organise for the staff for the Staff Evening?

Answer: A slidey mat race

No slidey mat races, but there is a tough game of Follow My Leader at the end, led by Tom. Miss Armitage, who has five brothers and is used to rough play, wins the apple-eating contest. The staff (and Madge Russell) are shocked to find items of clothing in a big pile, though the prefects point out that they did get them out of the laundry, as opposed to raiding people's drawers. None of the staff do very well in identifying whose baby pictures are whose, although Loveday Perowne, the Head Girl, gets embarrassed when Miss Lawrence makes a rather rude comment about her photo.
9. The day after a trying prep session, Julie and friends discover that the Hollow is flooded, and Commander Christy and Miss Annersley discover that the outflow of the pond is blocked. Emerence is the culprit, as Commander Christy finds her girdle at the scene of the crime, but what did she use to block up the outflow?

Answer: A scarecrow

Miss Annersley contacts Commander Christy, as she is worried about the sudden flooding. They go to investigate the outflow, as they think it might be blocked, and when Commander Christy goes into the ditch to investigate, he discovers that something has been wedged in the outflow.

He and a group of others manage to unblock the outflow, and it turns out that someone had lodged a scarecrow in it. The culprit is revealed to be Emerence when Matron identifies her name on a girdle found at the scene. Miss Annersley calls Emerence out of class and gives her a serious telling-off, and Emerence breaks down.

As punishment, she loses her part in the upcoming Christmas play.
10. In true Chalet School style, the book ends with a Christmas play. Who turns up at the end as a surprise guest at the play?

Answer: Joey Maynard

Earlier in the book, Jack Maynard pays a surprise visit from Canada to announce that Joey has not given birth to one baby, but has in fact had twins, and their names are Felix and Felicity. Madge does come to visit earlier in the book, as Mollie Bettany is having surgery on a goitre and Madge wants to be there for Dick, but it's Joey who provides the final 'shock' of the book.

The play is themed around the Three Kings, with Loveday as Mary, Tom as Herod and Verity-Ann Carey as an angel. After the play, as Emerence is talking to Julie, Joey appears with Felix and Felicity.
