Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', Hagrid bought Harry his pet owl, Hedwig, when he took him to Diagon Alley to equip him for starting school at Hogwarts. What was the name of the 'Owl Emporium' from which he purchased Hedwig?

Answer: Eeylops

Hagrid bought Hedwig in Eeylops Owl Emporium as a present for Harry's 11th birthday. She is a Snowy Owl. Flourish and Blotts is the wizarding bookshop, and 'Fortescue's' refers to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour. The Magical Menagerie sells magical creatures and also gives advice on their wellbeing.

Other shops and businesses in Diagon Alley include Madame Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, Ollivander's, which makes and sells wands, and of course Gringott's Wizarding Bank and the pub, The Leaky Cauldron, among others.
2. To whom does the rather unpleasant cat Mrs Norris belong?

Answer: Argus Filch

Mrs Norris is the pet cat of Argus Filch, Hogwarts' caretaker. She spies on the pupils on his behalf and reports any misbehaviour to him. She was Petrified by the Basilisk in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', escaping death because she only saw the reflection of the Basilisk in water on the bathroom floor rather than looking directly into its eyes.

She was later restored to health by a Mandrake Restorative Draught concocted by Professor Sprout, much to Filch's relief.
3. What is the name of Neville Longbottom's pet toad?

Answer: Trevor

Trevor the toad was given to Neville by his great-uncle. Neville frequently loses Trevor and spends a lot of time trying to find him. The first instance of this is at the beginning of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' at Platform 9¾ before boarding the Hogwarts Express to start his first term!

In the epilogue of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' it is discovered that Neville is the Professor of Herbology at Hogwarts, a subject he loved and always excelled at when at school.
4. In 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', what does Hermione's cat, Crookshanks, do to the Whomping Willow to help Harry and Hermione get into the Shrieking Shack after Ron has been dragged in there by Sirius Black in his Animagus form?

Answer: puts his paw on a knot at the base of its trunk to keep it still

Sirius, whilst in his 'Padfoot' guise, had already befriended Crookshanks and communicated to him how to keep the Whomping Willow still so he could gain access to the Shrieking Shack, a duty that had been performed during their schooldays by Peter Pettigrew in his rat Animagus form.

In an interview J K Rowling confirmed that Crookshanks was indeed part Kneazle, as had been suspected by readers of 'Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them'.
5. What type of magical pet is Pigwidgeon?

Answer: owl

Pigwidgeon is a very tiny Scops Owl. He is given to Ron in 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' by Sirius Black because he feels responsible for Ron losing his pet 'rat' Scabbers, who had turned out to be the Death Eater Peter Pettigrew in his Animagus form. Pigwidgeon is very noisy and gets over-excited when he is required to deliver letters, which are generally too big for him to carry.
6. Ginny Weasley bought her first pet, a purple Pygmy Puff, from Fred and George's shop in 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'. What did she call him?

Answer: Arnold

Fred and George bred Pygmy Puffs, a miniature version of Puffskein, in their shop, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, as part of their 'WonderWitch' range of magical merchandise. The Puffskeins and Pygmy Puffs resemble small balls of fur. Ginny used to enjoy playing with Arnold and he used to sit on her shoulder. He was frequently chased by Hermione's cat, Crookshanks.
7. Hagrid's dog, Fang, is referred to in the 'Harry Potter' books as a boarhound, but in the films he appears as a different breed of dog. Which one?

Answer: Neapolitan Mastiff

Despite his size, Fang is very cowardly. He is terrified of the creatures in the Forbidden Forest and is never happy to venture in there. In the films, the part of Fang has been portrayed by three different Neapolitan mastiffs over the series, named Hugo, Monkey and Uno.
8. Ron's pet rat, Scabbers, introduced in 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', turned out to be not just a pet rat, as first supposed, but the Animagus form of Death Eater Peter Pettigrew. In which book was this important fact discovered?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The truth about Scabbers emerged when he was confronted by Sirius Black and Remus Lupin in the Shrieking Shack, and forced to resume his true identity. Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, escaped from them to return to the service of Voldemort, but only after Harry had pleaded with Sirius and Lupin not to kill him. Pettigrew remained in Voldemort's service until 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', when his silver hand, bestowed on him by Voldemort to replace his own hand, turned against him and strangled him.
9. Professor Dumbledore had a pet Phoenix named Fawkes. His Patronus also took the form of a Phoenix.

Answer: True

When Dumbledore founded the Order of the Phoenix he taught its members a spell he had devised to enable them to communicate with each other instantly by using their various Patronuses. There are many Patronuses featured throughout the series. Harry's is a stag, like his father's Animagus form.

When Harry forms Dumbledore's Army in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', he teaches its members the Patronus Charm. Dumbledore's pet Phoenix, Fawkes, left Hogwarts forever after Dumbledore's funeral.
10. Of course, no quiz on pets in Harry Potter's world would be complete without the baddie of them all, Voldemort's pet snake, Nagini. In which language do they communicate with one another?

Answer: Parseltongue

Parseltongue is the language Voldemort uses to communicate with Nagini. He himself is a Parselmouth, as is Harry, due to Voldemort having transferred a part of his soul into Harry when he tried to kill him as a baby. Harry's ability to speak Parseltongue disappears after the death of Voldemort in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'. Serpensortia is a spell cast to conjure up a snake. Slytherin is of course the name of the Hogwarts' House to which Voldemort belonged when he attended Hogwarts as Tom Riddle. The House was named after one of the four founders of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, himself a Parselmouth, from whom Voldemort was descended.

Nagini is finally killed by Neville Longbottom during the Battle of Hogwarts, using the Sword of Godric Gryffindor, which he has drawn from the Sorting Hat.
