Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Flobberworm

Answer: X

Flobberworms are large, toothless brown worms that are considered to be the least dangerous magical being known to the wizarding world. Flobberworms are roughly symmetrical, with a mouth at each end that they use to eat food (mainly lettuce and cabbage), and exude a thick mucus that is collected and used as an ingredient in a number of different potions, including the Sleeping Potion.

During his third year at Hogwarts, Harry's Care of Magical Creatures class spend an entire school term feeding Flobberworms as their classwork after Professor Rubeus Hagrid loses his nerve following an incident in his first class as teacher, when a Hippogriff attacks Draco Malfoy. In their fourth year, Harry's classmate Vincent Crabbe falsely claims to have been "bitten" by a Flobberworm as part of a smear campaign against Professor Hagrid.

Flobberworms are classified X by the Ministry of Magic, as they pose no known danger of any kind to humans.
2. Horklump

Answer: X

Horklumps are small creatures that resemble fleshy pink mushrooms. Originating in Scandinavia, they are considered to be invasive, and can very quickly overrun a garden if allowed to establish. In the companion novel "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", famous magizoologist Newt Scamander incorrectly claims Horklumps have no known use to wizards; in fact Horklumps contain a reddish juice that is extracted from them and used as an ingredient in a handful of potions, including the useful Wiggenweld Potion, a concoction capable of sterilising and healing minor external wounds.

Although they possess underground tentacles which they use to hunt earthworms, the Horklump is classified X by the Ministry of Magic as they are safe to handle and pose no threat to humans.
3. Bowtruckle

Answer: XX

The Bowtruckle is a small, tree-dwelling being that resembles a stick figure. They have two long, sharp fingers on each hand. Bowtruckles are often found living in trees whose wood they consider to be of a quality suitable for making wands with. They are fiercely territorial creatures that are known to attack anybody who approaches their tree dwelling, but they can be easily distracted by providing them with their favourite food: woodlice and fairy eggs. During a Care of Magical Creatures lesson in his fifth year, Harry's class draw a labelled diagram of a Bowtruckle; Harry accidentally grips a Bowtruckle too hard, and it attacks him, leaving him with two long gouges in his hand.

Bowtruckles are classified as XX; though they can pose a danger to anybody they deem to be a threat, they are reasonably easy to placate.
4. Grindylow

Answer: XX

Grindylows are small, pale, green horned water demons that inhabit the lower reaches of inland bodies of water in Great Britain and Ireland. They have small, pointy horns, sharp teeth, and long, brittle fingers that have a strong grip. They are easily provoked and attack Muggles and wizards alike; the Great Lake at Hogwarts contains a large number of Grindylows that attacked Harry as he competed in the second task of the Triwizard Tournament during his fourth year.

Grindylows are classified as XX and are generally best avoided, though there are basic methods with which anybody who is attacked by one can escape.
5. Fire Crab

Answer: XXX

Fire Crabs are large, tortoise-like magical crabs that are native to Fiji. Fire Crabs have unique, jewelled shells that are highly valued by both Muggles, who want the jewels, and wizards, who turn the shells into elaborate cauldrons. The Fire Crab has the ability to shoot flames from its rear end in order to defend itself; during their fifth-year Care of Magical Creatures Ordinary Wizarding Level examination, Harry and his classmates were challenged to feed and clean a Fire Crab without sustaining serious burns. Rubeus Hagrid illegally cross-bred Fire Crabs with Manticores to create the Blast-Ended Skrewt, an even more dangerous beast.

Fire Crabs are classified as XXX, and can be safely handled when demonstrating a good level of common sense.
6. Hippogriff

Answer: XXX

Hippogriffs are large creatures that have the bodies, hind legs, and tails of a horse, and the front legs, wings, and head of an eagle. Hippogriffs grow to around 3 meters (10 feet) in height, with a wingspan of around 10 meters (30 feet). They are proud creatures who are easily offended, and must be approached in a certain manner in order to gain their trust before attempting to touch them. Despite their initial standoffish nature, Hippogriffs are fiercely loyal to anybody who has gained their trust, and will defend their owners from harm.

Harry starts taking Care of Magical Creatures as a subject during his third year at Hogwarts. Newly hired as the teacher for the class, Rubeus Hagrid's first class involves him introducing his students to Hippogriffs; Draco Malfoy is attacked by one when he incorrectly and arrogantly approaches it, whilst also insulting it.

Hippogriffs are classified XXX, and can be safely handled by wizards who demonstrate sufficient competency, particularly in regards to understanding that they are easily offended.
7. Sphinx

Answer: XXXX

The sphinx is a beast native to Egypt that has the head of a human and the body of lion. They are highly intelligent but dangerous creatures that enjoy giving riddles to people who talk to them, with a tendency to attack whenever the person gets the answer wrong. Harry Potter encounters a sphinx during the third and final task of the Triwizard Tournament during his fourth year at Hogwarts, and must answer the sphinx's riddle in order to get past it.

The sphinx is classified XXXX. They are considered to be a dangerous beast, and it requires a high degree of skill and specialist knowledge to handle them, particularly when challenged by one to answer a riddle.
8. Thestral

Answer: XXXX

Thestrals are a rare breed of winged horse native to Britain and the Iberian peninsula that have a skeletal appearance and wide, leathery bat-like wings that enable them to fly long distances. Thestrals are unique in the wizarding world as they can only been seen by people who have personally witnessed death (and are old enough to understand what "death" is). They live together in herds; Rubeus Hagrid raised a herd of Thestrals in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts which he believes is the only domesticated herd of the breed in Britain. Thestrals can be ridden like a normal horse, and are able to accurately fly to a given location using their amazing sense of direction, just like owls deliver mail.

Thestrals have sharp fangs they use to attack prey and are considered to be dangerous to humans; as such their XXXX classification means that only skilled wizards with specialist knowledge should attempt to handle them.
9. Basilisk

Answer: XXXXX

The Basilisk is a gigantic snake, measuring upwards of 15 meters (50 feet) long. Born from a chicken egg hatched underneath a toad and capable of living for a thousand years or more, the Basilisk is one of the most fearsome and dangerous magical creatures of all, possessing massive, highly venomous fangs and a gaze which kills anybody who looks directly into its eyes and Petrifies those who see the reflection of its eyes. The Basilisk has long been associated with Dark wizards; the ancient Greek Herpo the Foul was the first to breed one, and Salazar Slytherin hid one in a secret chamber in Hogwarts that his descendant, Lord Voldemort, used in an attempt to rid the school of all Muggle-born students.

In Harry's second year at Hogwarts, Slytherin's Chamber is reopened and the Basilisk re-emerges and Petrifies a number of students, as well as a school ghost and the caretaker's cat, before Harry discovers the Chamber and fights for his life against it.

The Basilisk is classified as XXXXX. They are known to attack humans and are considered to be impossible to tame or domesticate, though wizards who speak Parseltongue, the language of serpents, can control them in certain circumstances.
10. Acromantula

Answer: XXXXX

Acromantula are gigantic magical spiders native to the jungles of Southeast Asia. First discovered in the late eighteenth century and believed to have been artificially bred by humans, Acromantula are capable of human speech, posses highly venomous fangs, and have a leg span that can reach 4.5 to 5.5 meters (15 to 18 feet) in diameter. A large colony of Acromantula lives in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts; when he was a student at the school Rubeus Hagrid came into possession of an Acromantula egg that he raises in the school. He names the Acromantula Aragog; after being falsely accused of killing a student, Aragog escapes into the Forest and establishes the colony with Hagrid's help.

During the events of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", Harry and Ron enter the Forbidden Forest after Hagrid advises them to "follow the spiders" to learn information about a series of attacks on students in the school. They encounter Aragog and his family, and are lucky to escape with their lives.

Acromantula are classified XXXXX; they are extremely dangerous creatures that will aggressively defend their home from intruders, and they are known to eat humans.
