Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which book from the Harry Potter series does Hagrid become the Care of Magical Creatures teacher?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Rubeus Hagrid loves magical creatures; the more dangerous the better. His name was cleared in the Chamber of Secrets for events that happened fifty years ago and Professor Dumbledore is said to have gone straight to Hagrid's cabin, after Professor Kettleburn told him he wished to retire, to offer him the job which he immediately accepted.

He continues his work as gamekeeper as well. Hagrid said "it's what I always wanted". ("Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban")
2. What are the divisions in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures?

Answer: Beast division, Being division and Spirit division

After two failed attempts to separate the "Beings" from the "Beasts" an agreement was finally met in 1811. Grogan Stumps' definition of a beast stands today, although various creatures who should be classified as beings are classified as beasts (such as the centaur) at their own request. The Spirit division was created as it was deemed insensitive to classify ghosts as "beings".
3. Chizpurfles are parasites that will infest magical creatures and wizarding homes. When they can't find magic, what else have they been known to attack?

Answer: Electrical appliances

According to "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" chizpurfles can be the cause of the sudden failure of new electrical appliances.
4. How many eggs will a Hippogriff lay?

Answer: One

"Breeding Hippogriffs build nests upon the ground into which they will lay a single large and fragile egg." from "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them".
5. A crup looks very much like an animal one of we muggles may have seen or seen pictures of; which one?

Answer: A Jack Russell Terrier

The only difference between the two is that the crup has a forked tail. The Jarvey looks like a large ferret, the diricrawl looks like a dodo - it is NOT extinct - and the Nundu looks like a very large leopard.
6. In "the Prisoner of Azkaban" Professor Snape is critisizing Professor Lupin's work with the third years and states that the Kappa is more commonly found in Mongolia; is he right?

Answer: No, the Kappa is more commonly found in Japan.

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" notes that the Kappa is a Japanese water demon. Some one has scribbled next to it "Snape hasn't read this either".
7. Hagrid loves all the most dangerous creatures in the magical world. One of his favorite creatures is Aragog who he has had since he was an egg; now the acromantula lives in the forest with the wife that Hagrid found him. What is her name?

Answer: Mosag

Tarantallegra is a spell Draco uses on Harry in the duelling club, it makes his legs do a quick step without his permission. Fridwulfa is Hagrid's mother's name. All the acromantula living in the forest are the descendants of Aragog and Mosag. (Personally I think Hagrid made a huge mistake.)
8. The first time Harry entered Professor Lupin's office his teacher had a creature prepared for their next class; what was it?

Answer: A Grindylow

Although they study all these creatures in Professor Lupin's, classes the one Harry meets in his office is a green water demon with small horns and a strong but brittle grip. Harry has to fight off Grindylows in the second task of the Triwizard tournament.
9. How, or from what, is a basilisk born?

Answer: From a chicken egg hatched beneath a toad.

The basilisk is the monster that lives in the chamber of secrets, Slytherin's monster. Breeding basilisks was outlawed in medieval times. The first is thought to have been bred by Herpo the Foul and to have lived for nearly nine hundred years. There is no such thing as a basilisk's egg, and nothing will happen if you hatch an eagle's egg beneath a black cat or if an Augurey egg hatches on the full moon. An Augury is also known as the Irish Phoenix.
10. Why is Ron so afraid of spiders?

Answer: Fred turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was three.

We find out Ron hates spiders in "The Chamber of Secrets" - to be fair Fred only did this because Ron broke his toy broomstick, then and again Ron was only three!
