Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What causes a fraction to be undefined?

Answer: a denominator of zero

An undefined fraction is one in which the denominator is zero. It is referred to as undefined, because it is impossible to have a whole number as the quotient when dividing by zero. Consider the fraction 3/0. One way to check for an answer is to ask "What number multiplied by zero will equal three?" The answer is none; therefore, the fraction is undefined. Likewise, 0/0 is undefined. Asking the question "What number multiplied by zero will equal zero?" will produce an infinite number of results. To be defined, a fraction can only have one answer.
2. What type of number is 11/3?

Answer: improper fraction

An improper fraction is a type of fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. Since eleven is greater than three, than that means that 11/3 is an improper fraction. Improper fractions can also be written as a mixed fraction (a fraction where a whole number is part of the fraction).

The mixed number equivalent of 11/3 is 3 2/3, which is read as three and two-thirds.
3. Which of the following shapes would require a fraction to find its area?

Answer: triangle

The formula to find the area of a triangle is 1/2 * b * h * where b is the base and h is the height of the triangle. The fraction in the formula is the 1/2 that is being multiplied (or it could also be looked at as dividing by 2).
4. What does the graph of a fractional equation (such as y=2/3) look like?

Answer: horizontal straight line

A fraction is a constant and like all constants, the graph is a straight horizontal line. A graph shows x-coordinates and y-coordinates. A constant has no x-coordinates, which means that no matter what x is, y will always be the same. Y will always be the fraction that is being graphed.
5. Which fraction of the following is smallest in value?

Answer: 1/3

To compare two fractions, they must have the same denominator. The common denominator of the four fractions is 30 (5*3*2). Multiply the fractions at the top and bottom by the number that will result in the denominator being 30. Doing this means that 1/3 = 10/30, 2/3 = 20/30, 1/2 = 15/30, and 4/5 = 24/30. To find the smallest fraction, find the fraction with the smallest numerator.

In this case, it is 10/30 which means that 1/3 is the smallest fraction.
6. The fraction 3/5 is an example of what type of number?

Answer: positive number

Integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers cannot be fractions. Whole numbers begin with zero and continuously increase by one. Natural numbers start with the number one and increase by one. Integers are whole numbers and their negative counterparts.

In each of these three cases, it is impossible to get to 3/5 using the method shown. Therefore, 3/5 cannot be any of these types of numbers. The fraction 3/5 is greater than zero, which makes 3/5 a positive number.
7. Can fractions be even or odd?

Answer: No

To be either odd or even, a number must be a whole number. Whole numbers are natural numbers, their negative counterparts, and the number zero. Fractions are not whole numbers and therefore are not even or odd.
8. Which fraction is not in its simplest form?

Answer: 12/39

If a fraction is in simplest form, then the numerator and the denominator cannot be evenly divided by a number. Both 12 and 39 can be evenly divided by 3 (12/3=4 and 39/3=13). Therefore, 12/39 (which equals 4/13) is not in simplest form.
There are two rules which can help in determining if a fraction is in simplest. First, if the numerator is one, then the fraction will always be in simplest form. Second, if the numerator is one less than the denominator, then the fraction is guaranteed to be in simplest form.
9. You order a pizza that comes in eight slices. You eat two of them. Which fraction (in simplest form) identifies how much is still left?

Answer: 3/4

There are eight total slices, so eight is the denominator of the fraction. Since two slices were eaten, that means six slices are left. This is the numerator. Therefore, the fraction is 6/8. To get the fraction in simplest form, both the numerator and the denominator must be divided by two. The result of this is 3/4.
10. When performing what operation with fractions is it required to find the reciprocal (switching the numerator and the denominator) of a fraction?

Answer: division

To perform division with two fractions, the first step is to find the reciprocal of the second fraction (the divisor). Suppose someone was asked what 1/3 divided by 2/3 is. First, the reciprocal of 2/3 must be found. To find the reciprocal, switch the position of the numerator and denominator.

This results in 3/2. Second, multiply the two fractions. To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators to get the new numerator, and multiply the denominators to get the new denominator. 1/3 * 3/2 = 3/6, which can be simplified to 1/2.
