Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 12 is a very specific number in maths. It can be divided in several numbers other than 1 and itself. What is the specific name for such a number in maths?

Answer: Composite number

A composite number is any positive number that has one or more numbers it can be divided by (other than by 1 or itself). 12 has six of these divisors, making it the lowest composite number to have six divisors. 12 can be divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. The next positive number, 13, is not a composite number. It can only be divided by 1 and itself.
2. In geometry a figure can have many sides. There is a specific name for a figure with 12 sides, a dodecagon. If you add to this the number of sides of both a triangle and a hexagon, how many sides would you end up with?

Answer: 21

A figure with 12 sides (and also angles) is called a dodecagon in geometry. The name of this figure apparently comes from the number 12 in Greek, a combination of 2 (or duo) and 10 (deca). A hexagon has 6 sides and a triangle has 3. That would make 21 sides altogether. A figure with 21 sides would be called a icosahenagon, although that usually gets shortened to 21-gon.
3. The number 12 can be used to multiply. Which of these four options can't be divided by 12 (with a positive whole number as the result)?

Answer: 71

The numbers 48, 60 and 108 can be divided by 12. The result of those divisions would be 4, 5 and 9 respectively. 71 can't be divided by 12 to get a positive whole number as a result, the next number that can be divided by 12 is 72. In that case the result would be 6.
4. There is a sequence known as the Fibonacci sequence. It starts with 0 and 1. Every following number in the sequence is a sum of the previous 2 numbers. The first four numbers are therefore: 0, 1, 1 and 2. Is 12 part of the Fibonacci sequence?

Answer: No

This specific sequence was designed by the Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci. Each number in the sequence is the sum of the two previous numbers. As a result 12 is not a part of the Fibonacci sequence. The first numbers go as follows: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 13.
5. If you multiply 12 by 2 you get 24. How many positive whole numbers are there that 24 can be divided by (count 1 and 24 itself as well)?

Answer: 8

The number 24 has eight divisors. They are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24. It has two divisors more than the number 12. You will notice that the divisors of both numbers are equal, except for 8 and 24.
6. 12 is an interesting number. But is it also considered to be a prime number?

Answer: No

A prime number can only be divided by 1 and itself. 12 can be divided by several other numbers like 2, 3, and 4. The numbers 11 and 13 that surround 12 are prime numbers.
7. James went to the supermarket with his dad. They bought a package with 12 eggs in it. A group of 12 products can be called a dozen. How many eggs would James have if they had bought a dozen dozen?

Answer: 144

The word dozen comes from a French word that means "a group of twelve." The idea of using 12 things in a basic group goes all the way back to the time when most of the world spoke Latin. If you have a dozen dozen, it is called a gross. That would be a total of 12 x 12 eggs or 144 eggs.
8. Jane has a calendar in her room with 12 months on it. Every month on the Western Calendar has its own place in the sequence. What number is your answer if you add the place number for February to the number for November, then subtract the number for March?

Answer: 10

The Western Calendar, also known as the Gregorian Calendar uses 12 months, starting with January and ending in December. A year has 365 days, almost equally divided over the months, with most months having either 30 or 31 days. February is the only exception with only 28 days. February is the second month on the calendar, while November is the eleventh month.

This makes 13 altogether. Now you need to subtract the number for March, which is the third month. Your final answer will be 10.
9. In math class in school Anna uses a measuring stick called a ruler that is marked off in 12 inches. This measurement is called a foot. If Anna had 5 rulers, how many feet would she have?

Answer: 5

The use of a measure called a foot goes all the way back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. It was in Rome that the foot measure was divided into units that we now call inches. Nowadays, the use of a foot measure is most popular in the United States. Most other countries today prefer the use of metric units of measurement. 1 ruler of 12 inches equals 1 foot, so 5 rulers of 12 inches equal 5 feet.
10. Jason and his dad go to an ice hockey match. Counting both teams Jason sees 12 players. In the season Jason sees 15 matches. Assuming that you count the players in each match separately (even though they might be the same players), how many players has Jason seen in the season?

Answer: 180

An ice hockey team has 6 players in each team on the ice. Two teams would make 12 players in total. Jason sees 15 matches. There are 12 players in each match. This means he saw 180 players in total (counting the players in each match separately).
