Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Four friends go out for a night at their local, which has the most common pub name in Britain. What is it called?

Answer: The Red Lion

The Trip to Jerusalem pub is thought to be the oldest pub in Britain. The King's and Queen's Head pubs depict pictures of the reigning monarch of the time on their signs. The White Hart pubs is an example of allegiance - named after the heraldic symbol of King Richard II.
2. The lads order four pints of the Landlord's finest ale which costs 2 pounds 40 pence a pint. He has to go to the cellar to change the barrel, which is a firkin. After he has poured off the four pints, how many pints are left in the barrel?

Answer: 68

A firkin is an old imperial measure of 9 gallons. There are 8 pints in a gallon, making 72 pints in a firkin.
3. They sit at a table next to a couple of card players. One of the players says 'One for his Nob'. What game are they playing?

Answer: cribbage

Cribbage was invented in the 17th century by John Suckling who made a fortune from the game but allegedly used marked cards!
4. One of the four put a 1 pound coin in the juke-box and 'Malt and Barley Blues' came on. The band who had a 1970's hit with this record had a name with a pub connection. What were they called?

Answer: McGuinness Flint

Tom McGuinness was originally with Manfred Mann in the 60's - and Guinness is The Stout of Ireland. Darts were a London 8 piece band of the 70's - and a pub game. The Manhattans were a U.S. group of the late 70's to early 80's - and a cocktail of whiskey, vermouth and bitters. Derek and the Dominoes was fronted by Eric Clapton - dominoes is a game.
5. The barmaid put out a new set of beer mats. One of the guys asked if he could have one, as he was a collector. What 'ology' word describes his hobby?

Answer: tegestology

Reflexology is the study of human reflexes. The other two don't exist - I made them up to sound like beer mat collection!
6. In gratitude for the beer mat they offered to buy the barmaid a drink. She accepts and pours herself a sherry, costing 1 pound 80 pence. What glass does she put it in?

Answer: schooner

A balloon is for brandy, a flute is for Champagne and a Toby jug is an old style beer mug that depicts a round faced man with a three cornered hat. NB I have been informed by quizzers from Boston and Australia that schooners are used for beer in the US and Oz but this being specifically UK I hope American quiz takers can accept the answer that I have. (Apparently, some parts of the UK call beer glasses schooners, but the question is still correct, because it wants the name of the glass used for sherry, and a flute, balloon or Toby Jug is definitely not the right answer!)
7. They decide to play dominoes. Which of the following is the game they decide to play?

Answer: Honest John

The others are names of dart games.
8. The price of their next round of drinks comes to 8 pound 50 pence. The Landlord tells them that if they were in mainland Europe they would be paying in Euros. Approximately, how many Euros would the drinks have cost at the 2019 exchange rate?

Answer: between 9 and 10

The exchange rate (obviously variable) is around 88 pence for a Euro (or 1.13 Euros to one pound sterling) for the year 2019.
9. They decide on a game of darts and play 501 straight in, double out. One of the lads is in top form and finishes with a minimum throw. How many darts did he need to throw?

Answer: 9

To finish a 501 in nine darts you have to hit 7 treble 20's (7 x 60) making 420. The remaining 81 can be got by hitting treble 19 (57) finishing with a double 12 (24) or a treble 17 (51) followed by a double 15 (30).
10. These lads have had a drink, but you haven't. How much, in pounds sterling, has the evening cost them?

Answer: 20 pounds 90 pence

Four drinks at 2.40 each (9.60), 1.00 juke-box, 1.80 barmaid's tipple, 8.50 for the last round.
