Kohl is made by grinding lead sulfide into a powder. This substance has been used as a cosmetic in Northern Africa and many parts of southern Asia for millennium. Many cultures believed kohl to have magical properties that could cleanse the eyes, provide protection from the sun, as well as providing protection from evil spirits.

While it can be used on any part of the face it is usually worn around the eyes.
