Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Scottish Matt won the FA Cup as a player with Manchester City in 1934 and as a manager with Manchester United in 1948?

Answer: Busby

Busby played club football for Manchester City and Liverpool before his career was interrupted by WWII. He turned down the position of assistant manager at Liverpool to take the manager's job at Manchester United where he created the team known as the Busby Babes, several of whom perished in the well publicised Munich air disaster of 1958. Busby rebuilt the team and in 1968 became the first manager of an English team to win the European Cup when Manchester United beat Benfica 4-1.
2. By which name, usually associated with gymnastics, are swivel bits for horses also known?

Answer: Cartwheel

A cartwheel or swivel bit is an ordinary bit with extra eyes on the inside of the bit rings, the upper eye of which is used to attach the bit to the bridle while the lower eye is for attaching the reins. In gymnastics, a cartwheel is a move in which the gymnast rotates through 360 degrees while keeping their arms and legs outstretched, therefore resembling a cart wheel.
3. The town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire is world famous for which culinary item?

Answer: Pork Pie

Melton Mowbray pork pies are exported all over the world and were given Protected Geographical Status under European Union law in 2008, limiting the production of a traditional Melton pork pie to a designated area and using traditional ingredients. A traditional Melton pie must use uncured, chopped meat, which gives the filling a grey colour, and the crust must be hand formed.

When baked, the pie must be free standing, which allows the outer walls of the crust to bow outwards rather than being vertical as with a mass produced, non Melton pie.
4. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a flat horse race, which has been run annually since 1951 at which racecourse?

Answer: Ascot

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is an amalgamation of the King George VI race, first run in 1946 and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, first run in 1948. It is one of the most prestigious flat races in UK and is run over a distance of one mile, three furlongs and 211 yards (2,406 metres) and is open to horses aged over three years old. Previous winners have included horses owned by Queen Elizabeth II, Sheikh Mohammed, Lady Beaverbrook and Bing Crosby.
5. Which country is bordered by Colombia and Costa Rica?

Answer: Panama

Panama is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean in the south, which are linked by the engineering marvel that is the 51 mile (82 kilometre) long Panama Canal. Panama is rich in copper with many mines throughout the country and is also known for its high quality mahogany used in the manufacture of furniture and boats.
6. In 1967, Procol Harum reached number six in UK charts with the follow up to "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". What was this hit called?

Answer: Homburg

As well as reaching the top ten in UK, "Homburg" was a number one hit in Australia, Netherlands and South Africa, even though it drew much criticism from the music press for sounding very similar to "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (1967). Apart from these two tracks, Procul Harum only had one other UK top 20 hit, this being "Pandora's Box" in 1975.
7. Shane Warne, Curtly Ambrose and Waqar Younis are all known in the world of cricket for their skill fulfilling which role within the game?

Answer: Bowler

With 1,600 test cricket wickets between them, these three men were formidable opponents and much welcomed teammates for Australia, West Indies and Pakistan respectively. Since retiring, Warne and Younis have gone on to work in Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket, while Ambrose plays in the reggae band Spirited and was also knighted by the Antiguan Barbudan government in 2014.
8. Between 1988 and 2006, Wilmer Valderrama played which character on TV show, "That '70s Show"?

Answer: Fez

The home country of Fez was never given on "That '70s Show"; it was hinted at several times, becoming one of the longest running gags in the show, with the most blatant hint being that his homeland is a country disputed between the Dutch and the British, but the only disputed territory between the two is Bouvet Island in the Antarctica. Valderrama himself was born in Florida and is of Colombian and Venezuelan descent.

His other TV work includes recurring roles in "Minority Report" and "Grey's Anatomy" as well as voicing Manny Garcia in kid's show, "Handy Manny".
9. Which mountain is the highest in the Tararua Range in New Zealand?

Answer: Mitre

Mitre in the Tararua Range on the North Island should not be confused with Mitre Peak in the Milford Sound on the South Island. Mitre is 5,154 feet (1,571 metres) high, and reaching the summit is described as difficult but rewarding. It is a mountain at which the ascent and descent can be done in a single day and offers stunning views of the surrounding Tararua Forest Park including Waingawa River and Mitre Falls.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: Hats

All are types of hat. A busby is a small fur hat, originally worn by Hungarian hussars, while cartwheel hats were very popular in the 1930s, the most famous example perhaps being the one worn by Vivien Leigh in "Gone With The Wind" (1939). A porkpie hat is a small, round hat, often worn by silent movie star Buster Keaton and an ascot is a type of cap, similar to a flat cap, but differing from a Gatsby cap, in that an ascot is made of a single panel, while a Gatsby is made from eight panels stitched together.

The Panama hat is a traditional straw brimmed hat from Ecuador, originally made from the leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant, also known as the Panama hat plant. A homburg hat is a stiff felt hat as worn by Dwight D. Eisenhower, Winston Churchill and Al Pacino in "The Godfather" (1972), while a bowler hat, also called a Derby in USA, is often used to represent upper class people in countless TV comedies, but especially "Monty Python's Flying Circus", where every upper class twit was seen with a bowler, a briefcase and a brolly (umbrella).

The fez is a small, cylindrical hat without a peak. It is named after the Moroccan city of Fez and will forever be associated, in UK at least, with the comedian Tommy Cooper. Finally, the mitre is the ceremonial headgear of Christian bishops and can often be seen being modelled by the Bishop of Rome when performing his papal duties.
