Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which rank of the British army comes between captain and lieutenant colonel?

Answer: Major

A major in the British army is the equivalent of a lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy or a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force. The shoulder insignia for a major is a single crown and in being promoted from captain to major, one moves from being a junior officer to a senior officer.

In order to secure this promotion, a candidate must have served for a minimum of ten tears, at least two of which must have been as captain.
2. There have been several famous fictional people called Malone, such as child gangster Bugsy and TV accountant from "The Office", Kevin, but which fictional Malone has a statue in Dublin, Ireland?

Answer: Molly

According to the popular folk song, sweet Molly Malone may have "wheeled her wheelbarrow, Through the streets broad and narrow, Crying "cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh", but local folklore would hint that in order to make ends meet, young Molly was a seafood seller by day and a prostitute by night.
The statue of buxom Molly can be found outside the Tourist Information Office on Suffolk Street, Dublin, and years of tourists touching her ample assets have caused the bronze of her heaving bosom to wear off, leaving it very shiny and even more prominent.
3. Who was emperor of France from 1804 to 1814?

Answer: Napoleon

Although Napoleon served as emperor of France between 1804 and 1814 as well as for three months in 1815, he was originally a Corsican nationalist, having been born on the island just a year after it became a French territory, and wanted nothing more than to see Corsica overthrow the French.
In a series of treatises on the history and government of Corsica, written while he was a young man, he referred to the French as "monsters" and described them as "the enemies of free men."
4. In a 1980 movie, Judy, played by Goldie Hawn, joined the U.S. Army. What was Judy's last name in this film?

Answer: Benjamin

"Private Benjamin" is a very funny movie which saw Hawn nominated for an Oscar, but losing out to Sissy Spacek for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980).
Hawn did win an Oscar early in her career, for the movie Cactus Flower (1969), which was her first major film performance and saw her victorious in the Best Supporting Actress category.
5. What is a cocktail made of equal parts of advocaat and lemonade called?

Answer: Snowball

Advocaat is a Dutch drink made from eggs, sugar and brandy and although a Snowball is by far the best known of the advocaat cocktails, there are several others which are just as tasty.
A favourite in ski resorts, particularly in Italy, is the Bombardino, which is a mixture of warm advocaat and brandy, topped with whipped cream, while a Fluffy Duck is a delicious cocktail of gin, advocaat, orange juice and lemonade.
6. In 1993, Counting Crows had a Canadian number one with their debut single. What was this song called?

Answer: Mr. Jones

"Mr. Jones" was a top twenty hit for the band in Canada, Australia and USA on the Billboard Hot 100, and they followed it with further hits in those countries such as "Round Here" (1994), "A Long December" (1996) and "Hanginaround" (1999).
In UK, they had to wait until 2003 for their first top 20 hit, when their cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" with Vanessa Carlton reached number 16.
7. In the basilica of the San Pietro in Vincoli (Saint Peter in Chains) church in Rome, one can find a famous statue by Michelangelo, depicting whom?

Answer: Moses

Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II to build his tomb and although Julius II died in 1513, work on the tomb wasn't completed until 1545, complete with the marble sculpture of Moses sitting in the centre of the tomb's bottom tier.
The sculpture displays Moses with horns, as it is based on the description of him found in the book of Exodus in the Vulgate, which was the Latin translation of the Bible used during the 16th century.
8. Tommy James in 1968, Joan Jett in 1982, Prince in 2009. What did all of these artists pair with crimson to make a well known song?

Answer: Clover

"Crimson and Clover" was written by James and the drummer for his backing band, The Shondells, Peter Lucia Jr., and the fact that so many cover versions of the song have been recorded are testament to what a well written track it is.
Apart from the examples used in the question, it has also been recorded by country star Dolly Parton in 2005, Latino reggae band Spanish Fly in 1995 and in 1999 by industrial metal band, Deadsy, with Cher on guest vocals.
Maybe Cher is an secret industrial metal fan, or maybe the fact that her son Elijah Blue is Deadsy's vocalist contributed to this strange union, but whatever the reason, Tommy James has been most successful with the song, hitting number one in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box charts in USA.
9. Chuck Wepner served as the inspiration for Sylvester Stallone, but what was Wepner's profession?

Answer: Boxer

Wepner is a largely forgotten American heavyweight boxer, who, as a rank outsider, in 1975 fought the great Muhammad Ali. In the ninth round, Wepner managed to put Ali down, but this just served to focus Ali on the task at hand and over the next few rounds, he broke Wepner's nose as well as cutting him above both eyes.
Still Wepner battled on, losing by a technical knock out (TKO), two minutes 41 seconds into the final round, just 19 seconds away from going a full 15 rounds with Ali.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: Animal Farm

All are characters from George Orwell's 1945 classic novel, "Animal Farm".
Napoleon is the pig who is the revolutionary leader, while Snowball is his main challenger and Major is the prize winning boar who provides the inspiration for the revolution.
Boxer is the hard working cart horse who believes that "Napoleon is always right" and Clover is another cart horse as well as Boxer's close friend. Mollie is also a horse, but one that loves the attention of humans and was used to pull the carriage of Mr. Jones, the farmer ousted from the Manor Farm by the animals. Moses is the name of the raven who tells the animals of Sugarcandy Mountain, a mystical paradise to which animals go when they die, while Benjamin is the staid donkey, who refuses to be influenced by the revolution, believing that life will always be unpleasant, no matter who is in charge.
