Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose debut single in 1998 was "Baby One More Time?"

Answer: Britney Spears

"Baby One More Time" was written by Max Martin who has also written songs for Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Maroon 5 among others. He won ASCAP Songwriter of the Year every year between 2011 and 2017.
2. Originating in San Luis Obispo, California, in 1925, what name do we give to a hotel designed for motorists?

Answer: Motel

The most famous motel is probably the "Bates Motel" from the novel and movie "Psycho," but apart from the occasional shower incident it was welcoming. Not so welcoming is the Sleep-Eazy Motel in "The Simpsons", where the neon sign is often broken so it reads Sle azy Motel.
3. Which American state, bordered by Lake Michigan and the states of Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio is nicknamed The Hoosier State?

Answer: Indiana

Hoosier is the official term for state residents making Indiana the only state not to use the state name to describe its people as opposed to Texans, Californians etc. Interestingly though, no one is sure of the origin of the word.
4. Who was the first person to be inducted into "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" three times?

Answer: Eric Clapton

Clapton was inducted as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992, as a member of Cream in 1993, and as a solo artist in 2000. Surely John Mayall's Bluesbreaker will be inducted at some point, giving Clapton another one, and then there is his work with Derek and the Dominoes and Blind Faith to consider too.
5. A two-piece, often skimpy swimming costume for women is called a what?

Answer: Bikini

French designer Louis Reard launched the "bikini" in 1946, the same year that Jacques Heim debuted his very similar version named the "atome". Skimpy though they are, many companies also produce a smaller version, using even less material called a microkini.
6. The title track from the 1979 album "Cool for Cats" by Squeeze reached number two in the UK charts, as did the follow-up single from the same album. What was it called?

Answer: Up The Junction

"Up The Junction" told the story of a young love affair which didn't last and is also responsible for a popular pub quiz question about the child's time of birth, (It's 5:20 a.m. - "This morning at four fifty/I took her rather nifty/
Down to an incubator/Where thirty minutes later/She gave birth to a daughter.") "Labelled With Love" came out in 1981, "Black Coffee In Bed" the year after and their biggest American hit was "Hourglass" in 1987.
7. Liz Hurley in "Bedazzled", Harvey Keitel in "Little Nicky" and Viggo Mortensen in "The Prophecy" all played which character?

Answer: The Devil

An impressive list of actors have played the cloven-hoofed guy, including George Burns. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as well as Rosalinda Celentano in "The Passion of the Christ", showing Liz Hurley she's not the only female that's up to the task.
8. Which French supermarket chain opened the first hypermarket in UK in 1972, in Caerphilly, Wales?

Answer: Carrefour

"Carrefour" had a bad 2016, as they reported net profits had fallen to just EUR 746 million, the equivalent of USD 787 million. They have stores in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America and did have stores in Philadelphia and New Jersey, but these both closed in 1994.
9. Which blues legend wrote and recorded "Stones In My Passway" in 1937?

Answer: Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson died in 1938, aged only 27 but left behind some of the greatest blues songs, many of which are still performed by aspiring blues men to this day. In his lifetime he had hardly any success or recognition, but this changed when many of his recordings were reissued in the 1960s and his talent reached a wider audience.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: Crossroads

Britney starred in 2002 movie "Crossroads".
Crossroads was the motel in the long running ITV soap of the same name.
The state motto for Indiana is "The Crossroads of America".
Clapton owns Crossroads Centre in Antigua for drug/alcohol dependancy
and hosts the annual Crossroads festival to support it.
Operation Crossroads was the name given to the nuclear test program at Bikini Atoll between 1946 & 1958.
A crossroads is a junction.
According to legend, The Devil meets people wanting to sell their soul at the crossroads of Highway 61 and Highway 49 in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
"Carrefour" is French for crossroads.
Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul at the aforementioned crossroads and wrote a song about it.
