Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Buses are the main transportation in Cuba. These buses are named after which animal?

Answer: Camel

Camel ("camello" in Spanish) buses got their name because they are big, bulky, and too noisy, just like camels. They also resemble camels, due to the large "humps" on both sides of the roof. Camel buses can hold up to 300 people, making great pickpocket territory, so you'd better protect your wallet! Inside, they are very uncomfortable, crowded, and hot.

Some people even get sick or faint from the heat inside camel buses.
2. Cueva Grande de Santa Catalina is one of the most unique underground limestone caves in Cuba. It contains something that can grow up to over a meter! What is this unusually giant specimen?

Answer: Mushroom

This species of poisonous mushroom grows nowhere else in the world. Cueva Grande de Santa Catalina has eleven kilometers of dark passages, and was declared a National Monument in 1996.
3. Cuba houses many wonders of the animal kingdom, and the manjuari is no exception. It is a creature that has managed to survive since prehistoric times, but what kind of creature is it exactly?

Answer: Fish

The manjuari is an alligator-headed fish roaming only in Cuba, and has been for millions of years since the dinosaurs died out. Although it is classified as a fish, the manjuari can crawl onto land for short periods of time, out of the calm waters where it usually resides. It can grow to over a meter in length and weigh forty kilograms.
4. On a list of largest islands in the world, where would Cuba rank? Do NOT count continents, even Australia or Antarctica.

Answer: 16th

At 40,543 square miles, Cuba is the 16th largest island in the world. Greenland is by far first, New Guinea is second, and Borneo is third.
5. Cuban Javier Sotomayor has been considered the world's best at what track and field sport?

Answer: High jump

Javier Sotomayor has won gold medals in the Olympics, World Championships, and several other major contests. He set the world record at the time of his retirement in 2001 for 2.45 meters (8 feet, 46 inches). Sotomayor was the first high jumper to exceed 2.44 meters (8 feet).
6. In 1492, Christopher Columbus embarked on the island of Cuba, but he didn't know it. What very different place did the famous explorer believe he had arrived at?

Answer: China

Many believe Columbus first landed in Cuba, but really that was not until after he found San Salvador. Columbus believed that the world was spherical, unlike almost everyone else (they thought it was flat). With Queen Isabella's permission, he sailed across the Atlantic to prove he was right. Columbus found the "New World" and helped Spain conquer most of the Americas.
7. Cuban dictator Fidel Castro was hated by many. When he was in charge, approximately how many attempts or plots to assassinate or dethrone Castro had been made?

Answer: 600

It sounds crazy, but Castro won at least 638 times. Most of the assassination attempts were reputedly by the Central Intelligence Agency. Many plots were very creative, such as explosive seashells, poisoned wetsuits, and even a drink to make Castro's beard fall out causing him to lose his pride.
8. While giving a long speech outside, a very awkward thing happened to Castro, causing him to need to postpone the rest of his speech. What was it?

Answer: Castro almost fainted from the heat

After a few hours of his speech, Castro appeared faint and was gasping for words. He was led to his seat to rest. Castro claimed that he felt faint and tired from the heat. He said he did not get any sleep last night, and would continue his speech later that day.
9. Fidel Castro held one of the longest terms in office ever. How many years was he dictator of Cuba?

Answer: 49

Fidel Castro was dictator of Cuba from 1959 to 2008. He retired only when his 81 years of age caused him very ill health.
10. Cuba is the home of the smallest species of a particular type of animal in the world. What type is it?

Answer: Bird

The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world, and it can be found only in Cuba. It gets its name because, well, it's not much bigger than a bumblebee. Bee hummingbirds usually weigh under two grams.
