Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rhythm and Blues pianist

Answer: Fats Domino

Antoine "Fats" Domino Jr. was born (February 26, 1928) and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, the eighth child of a French Creole family. A famous pianist and singer-songwriter, before 1955 he had five records selling over a million copies each, and in all had 35 records in the US top 40.

He lived in his old neighborhood in a large house with his 13 children, which was flooded by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when many of his trophies were lost. President George W Bush personally handed him a replacement National Medal of Arts and the gold records were replaced by the RIAA and Capitol Records.
2. A song, originally in French, a hit in 1950

Answer: Domino, domino

This song was a big hit in Europe with recordings by Andre Claveau, Patachou, Lucienne Delyle and many others. After an English language version was produced it was also a huge hit in the US with hit recordings by Tony Martin and Bing Crosby, and other recordings by Doris Day, Jane Morgan, Teddy Johnson and Andy Williams.
Music by Louis Ferrari, French lyrics by Jacques Plante, and English lyrics by Don Raye.
3. A facial disguise, traditionally worn during the Venice carnival

Answer: Domino mask

Traditionally at the Venice carnival - and at many a masked ball - people would wear a black mask that usually only covered the eyes - a Domino mask.
The mask worn by actors portrayed as outlaws and highwaymen is often of this type.
4. A chain reaction often involving small falling pieces

Answer: Domino effect

The domino effect is the name given to a chain reaction where an initially small event triggers a series of similar events. Originally demonstrated in public using actual domino tiles, it has become a popular competition, with the Guinness Book of Records noting chains of many thousands. Many other forms of "domino" have been used, including books and even mattresses.
The accidents seen on motorways especially in fog, when a line of cars crash, each into the one in front, is also referred to as a domino effect.
On a totally different subject, it is thought that the gravitational pull of the moon activates smaller organisms, setting off a domino effect up the food chain.
5. A political supposition during the Cold War, that a country going communist would "infect" neighbouring countries

Answer: The Domino Theory

The domino theory was a theory prominent from the 1950s to the 1980s, that posited that if one country in a region came under the influence of communism, then the surrounding countries would follow in a domino effect. The domino theory was used by successive United States administrations during the Cold War to justify the need for American intervention around the world.
6. A game piece used in a variety of games, commonly in pubs

Answer: Domino tile

A domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. On each end is a number of spots (also called pips, nips, or dobs) or is blank. The backs of the dominoes in a set are all the same as in cards so the faces are not known when the dominoes are face down.

A set of dominoes consists of 28 tiles, marked with all combinations of spots from double blank to double six.
7. A game often played in pubs, involving the strategic placing of small spotted pieces.

Answer: Dominoes

"Let's play dominoes" is often heard in an English pub. There are several variations of the game, which is played with a set of dominoes (see question 6).
In a common version the first player lays down a tile, and each subsequent player lays down another tile making a chain with two open ends. When it is his turn a player lays down - if he can - a tile whose number of spots on one end matches the number on the open end of the chain of tiles. The winner is the one who uses all his tiles first. Additional rules involve what happens when a double is played.
8. A fast food chain whose logo is a rectangular block with one spot in one half and two spots in the other

Answer: Domino's Pizza

Started in Luton in 1985, Domino's has grown to be England's major pizza brand. It has since spread to Ireland and other European countries.
9. A small black fish with white spots

Answer: Domino damsel

As a juvenile, the Domino Damsel (Dascyllus trimaculatus) is one of the most striking of fishes. It is aptly named as it is black with three white spots around its head. As the fish matures, the spots fade.
Also known as the Three-Spot Damsel, this fish is commonly found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, around Indonesia. They are hardy and make good aquarium fish.
10. The European name of a small Japanese car

Answer: Daihatsu Domino

A small car by Daihatsu was called the Domino in Europe, although it was more commonly called the Daihatsu Mira. Also known by the names Cuore, and more recently Charade, it came with a variety of options and chassis variations.
