Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just about everyone knows that Theodore Roosevelt was the inspiration for the teddy bear. When his former friend William Howard Taft ran for president, what stuffed creature became his 'symbol'?

Answer: Billy Possum

Taft had an eclectic appetite, and once expressed his opinion that opossums were quite delicious. His political campaign thought they could mine gold with this and came up with Billy Possum as a rival to the Teddy Bear. Cute as they were, the stuffed marsupials quickly faded away.
2. Capitalizing on the popularity of both Theodore Roosevelt and the teddy bear, what author began writing a series of books known as "The Roosevelt Bears"? (Hint: his first name was a favorite of Bart Simpson when making crank calls to Moe's Tavern.)

Answer: Seymour Eaton

In 1905, Eaton wrote "The Roosevelt Bears: Their Travels and Adventures" under the pseudonym Paul Piper. It soon became as popular as the president and the toys. Two bears were involved in the stories: Teddy B and Teddy G (the names referred to the color of their fur). Other books in the series included "The Roosevelt Bears Abroad" and "Teddy B and Teddy G: The Bear Detectives".
3. Bears in Blue is just one organization devoted to what charitable cause?

Answer: Providing police and fire departments with teddy bears to give to children in frightening situations

Many police and fire departments around the United States carry teddy bears with them when they respond to a call that may involve children. In order to ease their fears, the children are given a bear. Studies have shown that this simple gesture helps kids cope with psychological trauma.

Many agencies, such as Bears in Blue, Good Bears of the World, and Bears on Patrol, make sure that first responders have a way to calm scared kids.
4. What is the connection between Jerry Garcia and teddy bears?

Answer: Garcia is one of many performers to sing "The Teddy Bears' Picnic"

Composer John W. Bratton wrote a sprightly little tune that was called "The Teddy Bear Two-Step" in 1907. When lyrics were added in 1932 by Jimmy Kennedy, the name was changed to "The Teddy Bears' Picnic", and it became a popular children's song. A number of singers, including Bing Crosby, Anne Murray, and Jerry Garcia, added this song to their repertoire.
5. According to the song lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy, what time do little bears have to go home?

Answer: 6:00

In the song "The Teddy Bears' Picnic", the bears play all afternoon, but "at 6 o'clock, mommies and daddies will take them home to bed, 'cause they are tired little teddy bears". Jimmy Kennedy (1902-1984) was an Irish lyricist.
6. In what video game do teddy bears carry Easter eggs that help players follow the tranzit?

Answer: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

"Call of Duty" games have contained teddy bears. In "Black Ops 2", there are three bears that emit an XP boost as well as a secret song. Some of the sections of "Black Ops" games get a bit violent with the teddies in their scenes, including shootings, decapitations, and general mayhem visited upon the wee beasties.
7. What does the American Teddy Bear Association certify?

Answer: That a "Teddy Bear" dog has the proper lineage

Known as Zuchon or Shochon, Teddy Bear dogs are a special mix of Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parents, and the name comes from their dark, expressive eyes. Breeders may sell puppies under the name "Teddy Bear", but unless they are certified by the ATBA, they are considered fakes, frauds, phonies or mere mutts.
8. What is the term for a person who ardently loves teddy bears?

Answer: Arctophile

The term arctophile comes from the Greek: "arcto" meaning "bear" and "philos" meaning "love". An enophile loves wine, a hippophile is crazy about horses, and logophiles love words.
9. Oh, the life of the idle rich! In the year 2000, how much did a special teddy bear fetch at a ritzy auction?

Answer: $2.1 million

Picture a lovely day at an auction house in swanky Monaco. A Louis Vuitton-designed Steiff Teddy Bear is the next item up for sale. "Oohs" and "ahhs" fill the gallery, and the glitterati are giddy with glee. Finally, someone recovers his or her composure and snatches up the bear for a mere $2.1 million dollars. Gussied-up teddies are not that unusual: a Harlequin Steiff sold for $75,826 in 1999, while a diamond-eyed little bear went for $84,000. But, come on, $2.1 million? Seriously?
10. It's not hard to imagine that there are museums devoted to teddy bears. Which Asian capital city, however, has a museum in which teddy bears enact scenes from its history as well as its contemporary culture?

Answer: Seoul, South Korea

Located at 126 Namsangongwon-gil in the North Seoul Tower, two huge galleries feature teddies recreating everything from palace life in the olden days to the bustling streets of contemporary Seoul. One can only wonder how teddy bears portray the bloody Korean War. Visitors can learn how kimchi is made, how colorful traditional Korean weddings can be, and how Psy made 'Gangnam Style' a universal hit in 2012.

Other teddy bear museums may be found in Santa Barbara (California), Naples (Florida), and Honolulu (Hawaii) in the US.
