Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is it true that in the United States there is a National Swing Association where competitions are held?

Answer: Yes

I can't believe this. Competitors in this form of sport manage to get their swings to go as high as twenty feet off the ground - and then they leap off when the swing is at its highest. My goodness, wouldn't it be easier to just shoot yourself? My idea of a daring swing is a comfortable hammock about two feet off the ground.

2. History has recorded the use of swings as a form of entertainment in many ancient civilisations. From which ancient Mediterranean civilisation is there definite proof of this?

Answer: Minoan

In the Heraklion Museum in Crete, there exists a small figurine of a woman sitting on a swing. The swing is suspended by two threads that are attached to supporting structures on the sides. The Minoan civilisation existed from the 27th to the 15th century BC. The little figurine was discovered at the Hagia Triada archeological site which overlooked the Mesara Plain. She's missing her head and, from the size of her ankles, appears to have suffered from dropsy, but it's still a lovely image that speaks to us today across thousands of years of time.

3. In boxing, the swing is a type of which punch?

Answer: Hook

Basically, the swing is a long distance hook, with the arm fully extended. Boxing is a sport which originated in Ancient Greece. It's a combat sport where two opponents try to knock the stuffing out of each other with their fists. Today of course, fists are enclosed in gloves. The original sport was played bare-fisted. The winner in a match is decided when an opponent is either disqualified, throws in the towel, or is deemed by the referee to be incapable of continuing in the match. This usually means the loser appears to be seeing little birdies circling above his head.

4. In which American communities did the majority of swing dances originate in the 1920s and 1930s?

Answer: African American

Swing dancing was a precursor of the dancing styles that eventually led to the rebellious age of Rock and Roll. The dance which is most associated with this daring new style of movement is the Lindy Hop. This began in Harlem in 1927. It incorporated a combination of several dance styles of the time. These included jazz, tap, and the Charleston.

5. In which sport can the Mike Austin swing be found?

Answer: Golf

This stroke was developed by Michael Hoke Austin, an English golfer who lived from 1910 to 2005. His parents moved to America when he was a child. In the 1930s, when he was living in Los Angeles during his successful golf career, he became interested in kinesiology. He studied it for the new few years and eventually obtained a Ph.D in this field. Establishing a gym in Hollywood he taught boxing, tennis and baseball. Interestingly, he covered the walls of his gym with mirrors, and, when giving talks on correct body positioning, he wore a black leotard on which he had painted all the bones of the human body, so that students could closely observe correct body positioning. His many famous students included one Howard Hughes.

The following are the steps he developed for the Mike Austin Swing, a stroke that earned him a fortune on the links:

"1. The hips slide and tilt laterally rather than turning
2. The club head is thrown from the top of the swing, not released at the last moment
3. The golfer bends forward from the hips rather than bending with the knees"

And if you can understand that, you're a true golfer.

6. In musical theatre, who or what does the term "Swing" refer to?

Answer: An understudy who knows several parts

What an amazing person to be able to memorise not just one but several parts in any production. An understudy is a stand-by performer who is capable of stepping in at the last minute, in the advent of any performer not being able to work. Not only does that person have to know the lines, but also the nuances of the roles and all the necessary moves each role entails. They're the unsung heroes of the theatre.

7. What does the term 'swing' in politics refer to?

Answer: The scale of voter change

An electoral swing is the percentage of voters who have switched their voting preferences from the party they had voted for in a previous election to those they have indicated they will vote for in a forthcoming election. It also indicates preferences between candidates and so on. The figures are used to predict outcomes for future elections - usually with a marked lack of success.

8. What was the name of the 1767 rococo painting by Jean-Honore Fragonard?

Answer: The Swing

This is considered to be Fragonard's best work, and it truly is a lovely piece of work. It features a beautiful young woman being pushed on a swing by her elderly husband, while her young lover is hiding in the bushes nearby. The eye is completely drawn to the figure on the swing, not only for the exquisite colouring and intricate detail of her gown, but also for the air of playful seductive mischief and joy of life she exudes. As she swings towards the hiding place of her lover, she flicks her shoe off in the direction of a statue of Cupid - thereby allowing her lover to take a naughty peek up her dress. The wicked wench!

9. "The Swing" was a 1984 album by which Australian band?

Answer: INXS

INXS was formed in 1977 and was still kicking on in 2012. Its lead singer, Michael Hutchence, was perhaps the person most responsible for the band's initial rise to fame. He had a very appealing stage personality, magnetic and compelling. Alas however, he was found dead in a room in the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Sydney in 1997. The band continued on without him, but only after a year during which they refused to perform publicly. The band's fourth album "The Swing" was released in 1984 and remained in the list of the top fifty best selling albums for several years. It was their next album "Listen Like Thieves" however which brought them worldwide success.

10. Is there a rifle known as the Swing rifle?

Answer: Yes

This was created for the use of target shooters in 1971 in the United Kingdom. A group of shooters all combined to come up with a newer and improved rifle for their hobby, but most of the design came from the minds of George Swenson and Laurie Ingram. Prior to this, the rifles used for this hobby were based on the designs of military rifles. The list of improvements incorporated into the design of the Swing rifle are remarkable, but a little too long to include here. They can however be found at the site listed below.
