Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first answer is a person, a famous Spanish painter whose actual name was Domenikos Theotokopoulos. Which is he?

Answer: El Greco

Born in Crete (then part of the Republic of Venice), El Greco also lived and painted in the city of Venice itself and then Rome before moving to Toledo, where he painted until his death in 1614. His style was unique, meaning that modern art scholars do not even bother putting him into a school or style. One of his most famous paintings is "El Expolio", or "The Disrobing of Christ".
2. This weather phenomenon gets its name from the fact that it often occurs in the Christmas season. It is the warm phase of a cycle of weather in the Pacific Ocean which often has deleterious effects in Peru and Ecuador, and it also affects the weather in California, USA and Mexico. What is it called?

Answer: El Niño

With its appearance in the Christmas season, El Niño (meaning "the child [male]") was given its name in reference to the Christ child. The cooler phase of the weather cycle is referred to as "La Niña", or "the female child". Commonly referred to as ENSO, El Niño is more properly identified as the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation.
3. In the 1930s, Europe saw the rise of Fascism and several nations were taken over by Fascist dictators. Which of these was called "El Caudillo"?

Answer: Francisco Franco

Franco ruled as dictator of Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. His title of El Caudillo was similar to the titles taken by Hitler (Der Führer) and Mussolini (Il Duce) in their fascist roles as popular military leaders of the state. Hitler was dictator of Germany, Mussolini of Italy, and Tito became the communist leader of Yugoslavia following World War II. All but Tito were Fascists. Tito was a Communist.
4. Headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, El Pollo Loco operates over 400 restaurants in the Southwest. If you were interested in a meal under 500 calories, which of the following would not be a likely choice at El Pollo Loco?

Answer: Rinderouladen with Käsespätzle

It is doubtful you'll even find Rinderouladen with Käsespätzle on an El Pollo Loco menu, since it is a German beef dish with cheese noodles. Also, the German dish is surely not going to run under 500 calories.

Juan Francisco Ochoa started the restaurant, whose name means "the crazy chicken", in Mexico in 1975.
5. El Alamein was one of the turning points of World War II. It featured two battles in 1942, after the second of which, Churchill was quoted as saying, "Now this is not the end; it is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." In what present-day country did the British, led by Bernard Montgomery, decisively defeated the Germans, led by Erwin Rommel?

Answer: Egypt

Today's city of El Alamein lies on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, about 60 miles west of Alexandria. The first Battle of El Alamein lasted through the first four weeks of July 1942, while the second lasted from October 23 to November 4. Along with the Battle of Stalingrad, El Alamein marked the turning point of the war in the European Theater.

After the war Churchill would write that before El Alamein, the Allies never had a victory, and after they never had a defeat.
6. Well, we can't have an El quiz without Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, the eleventh century Spanish warrior and legendary hero. By what name, by which the Moors referred to him, do we know him best today?

Answer: El Cid

The Spaniards called him "El Campeador" or "The Champion", while "El Cid" meaning "lord" is a Castilian loan word from the Arabic word "sidi" or "sayyid", according to Wikipedia. However, El Wik also goes on to say that no records of his being called "Cid" in his day have ever been found, although the cognomen (nickname) "Campeador" appears often in the records of his day.
7. Enough with people for a while. What "El" name is shared by old Spanish citadels in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Havana, Cuba, as well as a U.S. National Monument in New Mexico which features a mesa and towering sandstone promontory, as well as Pueblo ruins and ancient petroglyphs?

Answer: El Morro

The pueblo ruins atop El Morro number some 875 rooms, which supported a population of about 1500 people. It was occupied between 1275 and 1350.
The El Morro National Monument is also not far from another National Monument called El Malpais, which features a volcanic landscape.
8. The fortresses in Puerto Rico and Cuba are also referred to as "castillos". But if you journeyed to the Yucatan to see El Castillo in Chichen Itza, what would you be seeing?

Answer: a 79-foot-tall step pyramid

El Castillo is also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, the Mayan supreme god, whose name means "Feathered Serpent". Borrowed by the Mayas from the Toltecs, Kukulcan was a creator god and the god of resurrection and reincarnation, as well as a god of the four elements.

Each of the four sides of El Castillo has a stairway of 91 steps, which, when combined and added to the temple on top of the pyramid as a symbolic final step, equals the number 365, or the number of days in a year.
9. Orlando Hernandez, pitching great of the New York Yankees, retired in 2007. He was a member of three World Series championship teams with the Yankees and one with the White Sox. What was his nickname?

Answer: El Duque

Hernandez, who fled from his native Cuba in a boat in 1997, finished his major league career with a record of 90-65. While pitching for the Cuban National Team, El Duque won an Olympic gold medal in 1992 and three Baseball World Cup gold medals. Hernandez inherited the title of "El Duque", meaning "the duke" from his father Arnaldo who was also a great Cuban pitcher in the 1960s. El Duque's younger brother, Livan, had defected to the United States in 1995 and became a pitcher in MLB.

El Presidente was the nickname given to 22-year veteran major league hurler Dennis Martinez, the first player from Nicaragua in the majors. El Gato was Andres Galarraga, a 20-year MLB veteran first baseman, who was born in Venezuela. El Sid was Sid Fernandez, who pitched for 15 years in MLB and was a native of Hawaii.

Who was the duo that brought the song to the attention of American audiences?

Answer: Simon and Garfunkel

Simon and Garfunkel's single release reached number one on the charts of seven countries in 1970, including Australia, West Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, and Austria.

In a court case without rancor, Armando Robles Godoy, son of the original lyricist, sued Simon for copyright infringement and Daniel Robles was recognized as the song's author.
11. Which automaker produced the El Camino from 1959 to 1960 and then from 1964 to 1987?

Answer: Chevrolet

The Chevrolet division of General Motors began producing the El Camino in 1959 as a response to the success of Ford's Ranchero. Both the Ranchero and El Camino were described as coupe utility vehicles. After an initial two-year run, Chevrolet allowed the model to lapse until resuming production in 1964. From 1964 to 1977 the El Camino was produced on a Chevelle platform, but after 1978 Ford based it on a GM body platform.
12. His accomplishment of driving the Moors out of Iberia in 1492 earned this monarch the title of "El Catolico". Who was this ruler who was also king of Sicily, Aragon, Castile, Naples, and Navarre?

Answer: Ferdinand II

Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand (Fernando II of Aragon and V of Castile) are referred to as "the Catholic Kings" in Spanish history: he as El Catolico and she as La Catolica. Although they did not live together after marrying in 1474, together they not only completed the Reconquista, but they also, largely through Isabella's efforts, sent Christopher Columbus on his much ballyhooed voyages.

Philip II (Felipe II) was El Prudente (the Prudent). Charles II (Carlos II) was El Hechizudo (the Bewitched). Alfonso II was El Casto (the Chaste).

What was that title, by which he is still known to this day?

Answer: El Libertador

Bolivar was born in Caracas in 1783 and died in 1830 in Santa Maria, in present-day Colombia at the age of 47. His military leadership helped six nations gain freedom from Spain, thus earning the title The Liberator. Bolivar held positions of ruler-ship in several countries: President of both the Second and Third Republics of Venezuela, first President of Gran Colombia, first President of Bolivia, and eighth President of Peru.

In the end, he gave up all those positions, saying those who had "served the Revolution" had "plowed the sea".

As he was preparing for exile in Europe, he died of tuberculosis.
